Pastor Michael's Message

A season of growth!

Ever wonder why the “time after Pentecost” is GREEN? To show that our earthly realm is in a season of GROWTH! (Well, at least for the northern hemisphere!)

The altar linens and the background to the Encounter slides are green, representing the color of the church season. This season is also sometimes

called “Ordinary Time.” What’s so great about“ordinary”? Why recognize it?

The wonderful news is that even in the midst of the ordinary-ness of life, God is ever-present. We see God in the beautiful places where we vacation, or in our backyards as the dratted grass keeps growing : ) We see God in the pruning and cutting back of hedges, getting them ready for new growth in the months to come. The unwieldy nature of things around us is a beautiful mess created by God, and nurtured by our hands as stewards of God’s beautiful self revealed in creation.

As we prune and cut back the natural vegetation around us, so, too, do we prune and cut back things from our lives. Public schools take a break, allowing teachers to rest and fresh paint to be added to the hallways and classrooms. People take time off from work to rest and enjoy time together as family or friends. These renewals occur in a natural rhythm, for they are a Sabbath rest encouraged by the Christ that is in all of us.

We all carry in us the image of God, Christ with us. As we embrace what God has imbued in us - Christ in us - may we enjoy this season of rest andrenewal. May God spring forth wonderful growth in your spirit this day and throughout this season of ordinary time.

Peace, Pr. Michael

The Adventures of Flat Jesus

“Flat Jesus” was created from the basis of a children’s book called Flat Stanley,(written by Jeff Brown). In the book, a boy named Stanley becomes flattened and is able to be mailed to different places, having all kinds of exciting adventures. “Flat Jesus” is a way to keep our church family connected as we enter the summer traveling season. Color “Flat Jesus” and take him with you as you travel…or to whatever you do this summer. Take a picture of him doing lots of different things: going out to dinner, having fun at the beach or the mountains, hanging out with friends or cousins, or whatever you are doing! It will be an amazing adventure! It is a great way to remember that Jesus is always with us, wherever we go. And it just might start up a conversation with someone about what you are doing…and why!

HOW TO CREATE YOUR VERY OWN “FLAT JESUS”:

1. Take a printed “Flat Jesus” from the narthex or the office, or print out the template (on cardstock, if possible).2. Decorate your “Flat Jesus.” Be creative! You can make one for yourself and one for a friend!

SHARE HOW JESUS IS ON THE MOVE!When you have taken photos of “Flat Jesus,” you can share your “Flat Jesus” pictures:

1. By emailing photos [email protected]. By uploading your picture directly to Facebook and Instagram. Tag Advent Lutheran Church, TheAdventChurch Share on Twitter with @lutheran_advent Add the hashtag #AdventLC, #flatJesus and/or #jesusisonthemoveIt will be so exciting to see where Jesus is on the move this summer as you share your adventures! And remember, Jesus is with you ALWAYS
