DECEMBER 2017 • COVENANT PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH • AUGUSTA, GEORGIA
NOTES FROM SESSION
At its regular meeting on November 7, the Session began planning the future of Covenant in 2018. In the process of search-ing for a new pastor, the Sustain-ability Ministry recommended a maximum “effective salary” to guide the Pastor Nominating Committee (PNC) in their nego-tiations with candidates. It was understood that the actual salary might be lower, depending on the church budget and experience of applicants.
The Pastor Nominating Com-mittee reported that they are in the process of completing the paperwork describing the church and the expected qualifications of an applicant. The PNC also requested funds for search-re-lated expenses.
It was noted that Rev. Stu Ritter had been elected Stated Clerk of Northeast Georgia Presbytery at its recent meeting. He will begin on January 1, 2018. This is a fifteen hour per week position. Session voted to reduce Rev. Ritter’s hours and salary by one-sixth to allow for the time he will be handling both jobs until a new pastor is installed at Covenant.

LOCAL MISSIONS
GAP Item of the MonthThe item of the month for December is socks (Men, Women, and Children) which will be a welcome addition to our Food
Pantry shelves. Boxes for the item of the month are located near the sanctuary and outside Fellowship Hall. There are also GAP donation boxes under the mailbox table near the Church Office.
GAP is always in need of single service pop-top canned food, plastic spoons and forks, eyeglasses, and Bibles in good condition.
GAP needs bags!Every Thursday the Food Pantry at GAP Ministries uses about 400 plastic grocery bags to hold the items given out to clients. You can help by donating the bags you get at the store, so that GAP doesn’t have to buy bags instead of food. Just drop them off in any GAP box around the church.
– Thanks and blessings, Mary
GLOBAL MISSIONS
Christmas Donations for Honduras This year, the Sizemores, missionaries in Hon-duras, are requesting school supplies: spi-ral-bound notebooks, pencils, glue sticks, crayons, scis-sors, colored pencils, and pencil sharpeners. They can also use donations of socks and underwear as well as soap and toothpaste. Instead of shoeboxes as containers, backpacks would be more useful.
These gifts will go to a new outreach ministry in La Guama — a children’s home and clinic run by Brian and Charity Scott. They are working with Ernie and Alli-son Sizemore serving children in a nearby community.
Please have your Christmas Dona-tions at the Church by December 24.
WORSHIP AND MUSIC
“Hanging of the Greens” Worship ServiceDecember 3 is the First Sunday of Advent, focusing on “Hope.” We will have a special “Hanging of the Greens” and Communion service at 11:00 a.m. Please join us for this unique worship service of decorat-ing and preparing our sanctuary for the Advent and Christmas Season.
“Longest Night” Contemplative Worship – 7:00 p.m. Dec. 21
At the end of a year marked by mass shootings, a resurgence of hate groups, and tensions around the world, this quiet time of worship accompanied by the melodic strains of two harps may be just what we all need.
EDUCATION
Celebration Sunday
The First Sunday of each month during the Faith Formation Hour, CE Ministry is partnering with Fellowship Ministry to host our tra-ditional covered-dish First Sunday breakfast in the Fellowship Hall.
Instead of having individual classes after breakfast, we’ll remain together for the whole time which will include: music, birthday cel-ebrations, announcements, review of what we learned the previous month, introduction of the new theme, activities for the children, and distribution of the Covenant Family Fridge Flyer.
CHRISTIAN SYMPATHIES
Christian sympathies are extended to Krista Kelly and family on the death of her grandmother.
LETTERS OF THANKS
Thank YouMany thanks to all who helped with the concert and reception on Friday, November 3: Beth Ashmore, Sandra & Christopher Bowman, Andrea & Nick Butt, Nancy Carr, Jim & Phoebe Crimmins, Beverly Dorn, Luycle Ferris, Fred & Jane Gehle, Diane & Joe Griffin, Ruth Mayhall, and others I may have missed. This was a very successful evening.
– Sarah Colborn, reception coordinator
Covenant Family,A simple “Thank you” hardly expresses our gratitude for the many expressions of sympathy following the death of our brother, father, and grandfather, Vernon S. Ferris, II.
Your thoughts, prayers, cards, food, flowers, and memorials have blessed us through this time of loss.
– Amy, Tracy, Kristin, Gwen, and Lucyle Ferris

Church Member ProfilesEUNICE COOK
Eunice (Quin Simmons) was born in Pascagoula, MS, a town right on the Gulf Coast. Her mother’s family (Kell) had been Presbyterians for generations. Eunice feels she was destined to be Presbyterian. Her father, a civil engineer, was sent to MS to build a sea wall and bridges, and met and married her mother, a former schoolteacher, who cared for Eunice and her two sisters. In high school, Eunice was very active in the Presbyterian youth groups and camps in her synod. After graduation, she attended Agnes Scott College for two years, then transferred to the University of North Carolina and majored in sociology. However, she was also a cheerleader, a member of ADPi sorority, and Angel Flight, so school was not all work! Following her graduation, she greatly enjoyed a six-week tour of European countries.
Eunice first worked in Atlanta for the GA Department of Welfare (ADC). One year later, she moved to Boston with two friends, to see another part of the country and took a job in textbook production for elementary science. There, she was encouraged to teach and then took a six-week course to earn a state teacher’s certificate. She taught 2nd grade there, then moved to NC, where she taught for another year. Finally, she enrolled at the George Peabody School of Education (at Vanderbilt University) in Nashville, TN, where she earned her MA degree in early childhood and elementary education. She then moved to Atlanta where she taught 2nd grade, then supervised a Head Start program. While there, she met and married Joe Bell, and came with him to Augusta in 1966. Eunice continued in Head Start for two summers, then taught at Houghton until Alex was born in 1968. Being a mother occupied Eunice full time for many years; their second son Nelson was born in 1970, and Courtney joined the family in 1973. All three children were baptized and made their professions of faith at Covenant, where Eunice worked in starting the Mothers’ Day Out program and teaching Sunday School. During this time, she also was active in a Circle, serving as leader twice.
A move back to Pascagoula came when both boys were students at GA Tech, and Eunice’s mother became ill. She was there for five years, and returned to Augusta in 1998, where she bought a house and resumed her teaching career. She taught 2nd grade for two more years at John Milledge School. Eunice then met Joe Cook at a friend’s Thanksgiving dinner, and she and Joe were married at Covenant in 2000 by Gloria Jennings. They have been active partners in numerous activities at Covenant since then. They have been on mission trips, helped with Soup Kitchen, Meals on Wheels, and the Building & Grounds Committee. Eunice has served as Deacon and as Elder. Daughter, Courtney Davis also is an Elder, and since the birth of Courtney’s daughter Ella, Eunice and Joe have felt blessed to have them here. Eunice’s son Nelson (and wife Karina) have two children and live in Albuquerque, NM. Son, Alex (and Crista) live in Lake Charles, LA, with their two children.

JOE COOKJoe Cook was born in the small town of Fry, GA. His father was a foreman in the copper mines in that piece of GA that borders on TN in Copperhill, just across the Ocoee River. This area is replete with colorful names: Fighting Town Creek (which got its name after an Indian war there), between Tater Hill and Billy Goat Knob, in Gossip Valley. Joe was baptized, as a Baptist, in a swimming hole in Fighting Town Creek. He had one brother and one sister, but has lots of cousins, including seven double-first cousins. He describes his upbringing as “outdoorsy”, and has many interesting stories of his youth. In fact, Joe is just a great story-teller!
After he graduated from high school, with 32 other students, Joe left for Dayton, OH, where he worked in building materials. At age 19, Joe received his draft notice for the Korean War, but chose to enlist in the Air Force instead of the Army. He was sent to Lackland AFB in San Antonio for basic training. From there he was sent to an RAF base in Lakenheath, England, where he enjoyed the nurses, who treated him and his colleagues as “little brothers”. Following this assignment, he spent a year at Clovis AFB in NM; then he left the Air Force for college. Using the GI Bill, Joe attended Young Harris Junior College for two years, where he met his first wife. Joe and Mari married in 1957; Joe then attended GA Tech for several quarters. However, the Air Force again beckoned, so he re-enlisted in 1959. Joe was stationed at the Air Force Academy in CO and his wife taught school; their first son David was born there. Next, he went back to England for three years, where daughter Kelli was born. Due to space limitations, here are the places Joe was stationed: Tindall, FL; San Antonio, TX; Kure Beach, NC; Thule, Greenland (brrr!); and finally, Syracuse, NY. Joe finished his college degree in anthropology at Syracuse University.
Augusta became the Cooks’ home when Joe came here to attend MCG. He worked at the Veterans Hospital and MCG, where he was trained in neurology and worked until he retired in 1997. Joe’s wife Mari died in 1998, after 41 years of marriage. Joe met Eunice at a friend’s home, and they married in 2000. Since Joe joined us at Covenant, he has contributed in many ways: Soup Kitchen, van driver for Family Promise, Building & Grounds, and Meals on Wheels. He is an ordained Elder, and served for 15 years as Beadle at the Kirking of the Tartans services. He and Eunice have participated in several mission trips to Mexico and Mississippi. Joe and Eunice are faithful members of the “Listening for God” Sunday evening class. Joe has six grandchildren.
Joe’s “people” were Presbyterians when they came to America and settled in North Carolina, then on to north Georgia, but there were no Presbyterian churches there. His great-aunt Mary (the family Matriarch) complained about this frequently; she would be pleased to know that Joe is now Presbyterian.
