Beloved in Christ, as we await the great festival of Christmas let us

prepare ourselves so that we may be shown its true meaning. Let us hear,

in lessons from Holy Scripture, how the prophets of Israel foretold that

God would visit and redeem his waiting people. Let us rejoice, in our

carols and hymns, that the good purpose of God is being mightilyfullled. Let us celebrate the promise that our Lord and Saviour, Jesus

Christ, will bring all men and all things into the glory of God's eternal

kingdom. e blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are

cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have

the Gospel preaed to them.

But rst, let us pray for the world whi God so loves, for those who

have not heard the good news of God, or who do not believe it; for those

who walk in darkness and the shadow of death; and for the Chur in

this place and everywhere, that it may be freed from all evil and fear, and

may in pure joy lift up the light and love of God. ese prayers and

praises let us humbly oer to God, in the words whi Christ himself

taught us:

Our Father, whi art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom

come; thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our

daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them thattrespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us

from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever

and ever. Amen.

Exodus 2:23-3:6Moses encounters the burning bush.

And it came to pass in process of time, that the king of Egypt died: and

the ildren of Israel sighed by reason of the bondage, and they cried,

and their cry came up unto God by reason of the bondage. And God

heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham,

with Isaac, and with Jacob. And God looked upon the ildren of Israel,

and God had respect unto them. Now Moses kept the o of Jethro his

the desert, and came to the mountain of God, even to Horeb. And the

Isaiah 11: 1-4, 10 Gods Spirit upon him who is to come from the root of Jesse.

And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Bran

shall grow out of his roots: And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon

him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and

might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD; And shallmake him of qui understanding in the fear of the LORD: and he shall

not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of

his ears: But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove

with equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth with

wied. And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse, whi shall stand

O Root of Jesse, whi standest for an ensign of the people, at

whom kings shall shut their mouths, to whom the Gentiles shall

seek: Come and deliver us, and tarry not.

e rod of Jesse hath blossomed: a Virgin hath brought forthGod and man: God hath restored peace, reconciling in Himself

Isaiah 22:20-24 David's key is laid upon Jesus' shoulder.

And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will call my servant Eliakim

the son of Hilkiah: And I will clothe him with thy robe, and strengthen

him with thy girdle, and I will commit thy government into his hand:and he shall be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to the house

of Judah. And the key of the house of David will I lay upon his shoulder;

so he shall open, and none shall shut; and he shall shut, and none shall

open. And I will fasten him as a nail in a sure place; and he shall be for a

glorious throne to his father's house. And they shall hang upon him all

the glory of his father's house, the ospring and the issue, all vessels of

small quantity, from the vessels of cups, even to all the vessels of agons.

O Key of David, and Sceptre of the house of Israel; that openest,

sieth in darkness and the shadow of death.

Antiphon: O Oriens

O Radiant Dawn, splendour of eternal light, sun of justice:

come, shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of

death. Isaiah had prophesied, e people who walked in

darkness have seen a great light; upon those who dwelt in theland of gloom a light has shown.M: J M

Isaiah 41:25, 42:1-7 e announcement of Gods Servant and his work to come.

I have raised up one from the north, and he shall come: from the rising of

the sun shall he call upon my name: and he shall come upon princes as

upon morter, and as the poer treadeth clay. Behold my servant, whom I

uphold; mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth; I have put my spiritupon him: he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles. He shall not cry,

nor lift up, nor cause his voice to be heard in the street. A bruised reed

Isaiah 7:1-4, 10-14A call for faith and the sign of Immanuel

And it came to pass in the days of Ahaz the son of Jotham, the son ofUzziah, king of Judah, that Rezin the king of Syria, and Pekah the son of

Remaliah, king of Israel, went up toward Jerusalem to war against it, but

could not prevail against it. And it was told the house of David, saying,

Syria is confederate with Ephraim. And his heart was moved, and the

heart of his people, as the trees of the wood are moved with the wind.

en said the LORD unto Isaiah, Go forth now to meet Ahaz, thou, and

Shearjashub thy son, at the end of the conduit of the upper pool in the

a sign of the LORD thy God; ask it either in the depth, or in the height

above. But Ahaz said, I will not ask, neither will I tempt the LORD. And

he said, Hear ye now, O house of David; Is it a small thing for you to

weary men, but will ye weary my God also? erefore the Lord himselfshall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and

shall call his name Immanuel.

Collect for Advent:

Almighty God, give us grace that we may cast away the works of

darkness, and put upon us the armour of light, now in the time of this

mortal life in whi thy Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great

humility; that in the last day, when he shall come again in his gloriousmajesty to judge both the qui and the dead, we may rise to the life

immortal; through him who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy

Ghost, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Blessing:

Christ the Sun of Righteousness shine upon you and scaer the darkness

from before your path. And the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the

Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you, and remain with you always.Amen.
