The Season of Advent Traditionally, Advent is a penitential season of the church year. The life of a Christian is

one of repentance (we begin the Divine Service with the Confession of Sins) but during the season of Advent, it is even more pronounced. This, of course, goes against the ways of the world which dives headlong into Christmas immediately following Thanksgiving.

Advent is also a season of preparation and anticipation. The Church looks for the coming of her Savior in this threefold advent: (1) his coming in the flesh; (2) his return in judgment; (3) his daily coming in Word and Sacrament. The Church encompasses all these facets of the season in the single word that defines Advent worship: “Come!” Throughout this season, that single word is our invitation, our anticipation, our sure and certain hope.

Come quickly, Lord Jesus! Amen! Why don’t we sing the song of praise in the liturgy?

Traditionally, with the penitential nature of the season, the Gloria in Excelsis (or other song) is not sung during Advent. The absence of this song of praise marks Advent worship with a sense of something missing. During the four weeks of preparation, the Church looks forward to the return of the song of the angels on Christmas Day in celebration of God fulfilling his promises in Christ. The Advent Wreath

Last week, we lit the Prophecy candle, remembering those who spoke His promises. Today, we light the Bethlehem Candle symbolizing the preparations made for Jesus Christ as he came to establish his Kingdom of Grace. The prophet Micah prophesied concerning the birthplace of the Savior: “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are sma# among the clans of Judah, $om you, wi# go out the one who wi# be the ruler for me in Israel. His goings forth are $om the beginning, $om the days of eternity.” (Micah 5:2)

Holy Communion is O!ered This Morning As Christians who believe that the Bible is inspired by God and that every word written in it is God’s holy word, we believe that we receive the body and blood in, with, and under the bread and wine. While this is something that goes beyond our human understanding, our faith allows us to accept this as true. God warns us in the Bible that anyone who doesn’t understand this

teaching or who denies this real presence of Christ’s body and blood will do damage to his or her soul if not properly taught first (1 Corinthians 11:27-29).

As a congregation we care about people and about the spiritual well-being of individuals, especially those attending the Lord’s Table this morning. If you are a guest and desire to commune, please speak to the pastor before the service. Our altar is open to those who confess oneness with us in doctrine, are not under church discipline in another congregation, and are members of our congregation, one of our sister congregations in the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod [WELS], or a member of our sister synod, the Evangelical Lutheran Synod [ELS].

If you have questions, please speak with Pastor before taking part in the sacrament. He welcomes the chance to study what God says with you. Thank you for honoring God’s Word in this manner. 6

Absolution CW, p.16During the season of Advent, we omit the song of praise. See p.1 for an explanation.

Prayer of the Day M Stir up our hearts, O Lord, to prepare the way for your only Son. By his coming

give us strength in our conflicts and shed light on our path through the darkness of this world; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

The WordFirst Lesson: Malachi 4:1-6 (EHV)

Malachi forete#s the destruction of this world by fire and the coming of the “sun of righteousness... with healing in his wings.” That “sun of righteousness” is Christ, the Savior.

Look! The day is coming, burning like a blast furnace. All the arrogant and every evildoer will be stubble. The day that is coming will set them on fire, says the Lord of Armies, a day that will not leave behind a root or branch for them. 2But for you who fear my name, the sun of righteousness will rise, and there will be healing in its wings. You will go out and jump around like calves from the stall. 3You will trample the wicked. They will surely be ashes under the soles of your feet on the day when I take action, says the Lord of Armies.

4Remember the law of my servant Moses, which I commanded to him at Horeb to serve as statutes and judgments over all Israel.

5Look! I am going to send Elijah the prophet to you before the great and fearful day of the Lord comes! 6He will turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers. Otherwise, I will come and strike the land with complete destruction.

Second Lesson: Romans 15:4-13 (EHV)Paul encourages us to live in peace and unity with each other and to accept one another in love, regardless of outward circumstances. There is no difference between Jews and Gentiles, since Jesus chose each of us to be

his own.4Indeed, whatever was written in the past was written for our instruction, so that,

through patient endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures, we would have hope. 5And may God, the source of patient endurance and encouragement, grant that you agree with one another in accordance with Christ Jesus, 6so that with one mind, in one voice, you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

7For this reason, accept one another as Christ also accepted you to the glory of God. 8For I am saying that Christ became a servant of those who are circumcised for the sake of God’s truth, to confirm the promises made to the patriarchs. 9He also did this so that the Gentiles would glorify God for his mercy, as it is written:

For this reason I will praise you among the Gentiles, and I will sing to your name.

10And again it says: Rejoice, you Gentiles, with his people.

11And again: Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles, and let all the peoples give him praise.

12And again Isaiah says: There will be a Root of Jesse, and he is the one who will rise up to rule the Gentiles; on him the Gentiles will place their hope.

13Now may the God of hope fill you with complete joy and peace as you continue to believe, so that you overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Verse of the Day: Luke 3:4,6M A#eluia. A voice of one ca#ing in the wilderness, “Prepare the way of the Lord! Make his

paths straight. And everyone wi# see the salvation of God.” A#eluia.

Gospel Lesson: Luke 21:25-36 (NIV84)Jesus te#s of the signs which wi# precede his second coming. He describes it as a powerful and glorious event.

He te#s us to be strong as we wait for his second coming.25 “There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in

anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea. 26 Men will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be 4

shaken. 27 At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. 28 When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.”

29 He told them this parable: “Look at the fig tree and all the trees. 30 When they sprout leaves, you can see for yourselves and know that summer is near. 31 Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that the kingdom of God is near.

32 “I tell you the truth, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. 33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.

34 “Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with dissipation, drunkenness and the anxieties of life, and that day will close on you unexpectedly like a trap. 35

For it will come upon all those who live on the face of the whole earth. 36 Be always on the watch, and pray that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man.”
