What facilitators need to know:
Grounded discussions do not happen spontaneously, they need to be fostered and stimulated
Communicate a specific issue or criterion to participants and ask them to be specific
Ask for similarities and differences between episodes to generate grounded interactions
Nemirovsky, R. & Galvis, A. (2004). Facilitating grounded online interactions in video-case-based teacher professional development. Journal of Science Education and Technology, 13(1).
General Postings:
Participants express their view about something
Participants express general remarks related to the video
Participants refer to the overall quality in the video
Participants refer to the general characteristics of their own experiences
Galvis, A.H. (2004).Critical success factors implementing multimedia case-based teacher professional development. The Concord Consortium, Concord, Massachusetts.
Video can be utilized to illustrate how something works
Video provides information in detail that text and graphic cannot
Video can grab student’s attention Video can show real life examples Video stimulates discussions Video can appeal to the learning styles of visual
learners Video could enhance problem-based learning
“Cognitive Processing”
Videos can assist the acquisition of content learning, or what has been referred to as “cognitive processing”.
Video based instruction could be used as a means to provide additional support for learners who are otherwise completely reliant on asynchronous delivery.
In situations where a student needs continual feedback to acquire the refinement of a physical task, video is far superior than text or graphics.
