Advantages of e-Learning
By: Courtnie Ellis
What is e-Learning?
E-learning is defined as a set of models, methodologies, and processes for ‘the acquisition and use of knowledge distributed and facilitated primarily by electronic means.’ (Caporarello & Sarchioni)
It is a virtual tool used to conduct online learning in educational settings, or staff development in business settings.
Benefits of e-Learning
Ease of access Can be accessed from anywhere in the world Resources are readily available at any time Most websites available on many devices: laptops,
desktops, tablets, smart phones, etc.
Benefits continued
Convenience Available at any time of the day Allows for more flexibility
Benefits continued
Affordable Availability of free programs No paper resources required (textbooks, handouts,
etc.)
E-Learning Concerns
Unfamiliarity When used in an educational setting, students and
parents may not be familiar with how to navigate the website at home.
When used for staff development, some staff members may not be familiar with up-to-date technology.
How can this be addressed?
Provide extensive training for students and parents on how to use the program. Detailed instructions sent home with students Virtual demo during “meet-the-teacher” night Jing video link sent via email
Provide staff development training on how to use the program In-service training Faculty meetings – refresh the information frequently
Other concerns
Self-direction and self-discipline are required in order for e-learning to be a successful mode of learning Teaches responsibility Holds all students/staff members accountable
How can this issue be addressed? Provide a calendar of relevant due dates Give reminders of due dates Do a “refresher” course on how to use the program
frequently
E-Learning in the 21st Century
Students are increasingly experiencing the use of video tutorials as a way to hear an instructor’s directions or lectures (Frisbee)
Many modes of e-Learning available: ThinkThroughMath.com Compass Learning Blackboard Educational apps for iPads and tablets
