Page 4: advantages and disadvantages of principal communications Media

WC advantages

1. Provides written record and evidence of dispatch and receipt;

2. capable of relaying complex ideas;

3. provides analysis, evaluation and summary;

4. disseminates information to dispersed receivers;

5. can confirm, interpret and clarify oral communications;

6. forms basis of contract or agreement.

Page 5: advantages and disadvantages of principal communications Media

WC disadvantages

1. Can take time to produce,

2. can be expensive;

3. communication tends to be more formal and distant;

4. can cause problems of interpretation;

5. instant feedback is not possible;

6. once dispatched - difficult to modify message;

Page 6: advantages and disadvantages of principal communications Media

WC disadvantages

1. does not allow for exchange of opinions views or attitudes except over period of time.

Oral communication

1. Face-to-face conversation

2. Interview, Meeting

3. Oral briefing,Public address

4. Oral presentation

5. Telephone call Conference

6. Training session

7. etc

Page 8: advantages and disadvantages of principal communications Media

OC advantages

1. Direct medium of communication;

2. advantages of physical proximity and, usually, both sight and sound of sender and receiver;

3. allows for instant interchange of opinions views, attitudes — instantaneous feedback; easier to convince or persuade;

Page 9: advantages and disadvantages of principal communications Media

OC advantages cont’d

1. allows for contribution and participation from all present.

Page 10: advantages and disadvantages of principal communications Media

OC disadvantages

1. More difficult to hold ground in face of opposition;

2. more difficult to control when a number of people take part;

3. lack of time to think things out —

4. quality of decision-making may be inferior;

5. often no written record of what has been said;

6.

Page 11: advantages and disadvantages of principal communications Media

OC disadvantages

1. sometimes disputes result over what was agreed

Visual communication (VC)

1. Non-verbal communication — expression gestures posture

2. Diagram3. Chart4. Table5. Graph6. Photograph

VC

1. Film slide

2. Film

3. Video tape

4. Model

5. Mock-up

Page 14: advantages and disadvantages of principal communications Media

VC advantages

1. Reinforces oral communication;

2. provides additional visual stimulus;

3. simplifies written or spoken word;

4. quantifies — provides ideas in number form;

5. provides simulations of situations

6. illustrates techniques and procedures

7. provides visual record.

Page 15: advantages and disadvantages of principal communications Media

VC disadvantages

1. May be difficult to interpret without reinforcing written or spoken word;

2. requires additional skills of comprehension and interpretation

3. can be costly and expensive in time to produce;

4. may be costly to disseminate or distribute

5. storage may be more expensive

6. does not always allow time for evaluation.

Computerised Telecommunications(CT)

1. Local/wide area networks

2. Fax

3. Telex

4. Packet switching

5. Teleconferencing

6. Computer conferencing/networking

Page 17: advantages and disadvantages of principal communications Media

CT advantages

1. Speed of transmission: WAN messages, London to Sydney, Australia in 11 seconds.

Page 18: advantages and disadvantages of principal communications Media

CT advantages

1. Versatility: Fax can transmit text, number, graphics, artwork and photographs all on one side of A4 if need be. Tele-and computer conferencing provide interpersonal exchanges visually and via VDU screens.

Page 19: advantages and disadvantages of principal communications Media

CT adv cont’d

3. Accuracy Instantaneous message-reading and checking of electronic circuits operating between sending and receiving equipment during the transmission of high-speed ‘bits’ of the message in packet switching of computer data ensure the message is accurately received in remote locations.

Page 20: advantages and disadvantages of principal communications Media

CT advantages

3. Feedback/instantaneous exchange: Cómputerised telecommunications allow for a virtually simultaneous exchange of information and responses.

Page 21: advantages and disadvantages of principal communications Media

CT disadvantages

1. Volume of transmitted data: The volume of telecommunicated information is increasing at such a rate that business personnel are unable to absorb it within relevant time limits

Page 22: advantages and disadvantages of principal communications Media

CT disadvantages

1. Costs: Telecommunicated messages have billing premiums placed upon them to pay for the enormous development and hardware investments made nationally and internationally. However, the cost of fax, telex and communications modems etc is falling rapidly in an expanding market.

Page 23: advantages and disadvantages of principal communications Media

CT disad. cont’d

3. Legal implications: Words printed on paper at source still have a legal currency that a faxed message does not (but which telex does!).

Page 24: advantages and disadvantages of principal communications Media

CT disdvantages

3. Instant delivery: The almost instantaneous delivery of LAN/WAN Email messages etc can cause upsets if messages are composed in anger or are ‘half-baked’ and then dispatched irretrievably.
