Adaptable process controllers for adaptable plants
However, up to 80 nodes can be installedalong a single Advant Fieldbus 100, making asystem of multiple Advant Controller 70scapable of managing many thousands of I/O.
The controller is programmed in AMPL, thegraphic language used throughout AdvantOCS with Master software.
It can even be programmed while being on-line to the process, making it easy to fixprogram errors and adapt the scheme tochanging needs. And I/O and communica-tion modules can be replaced live to mini-mize the disturbances caused by hardwarefailures and system expansions.
Advant Controller 70Advant Controller 70 is a modular processcontroller offering a full complement ofprocess control functions, from logic toregulatory control. It also provides a fullrange of process inputs and outputs forindustry-standard d.c and a.c. signal levelsand devices, including resistance-temperaturesensors and thermocouples. So processdevices can be wired up to the controllerswith a minimum of signal conditioning.
Digital process interfacing modules typicallyprovide 16 channels while analog modulesoffer 8. Since an Advant Controller 70 canaccommodate 12 I/O modules this means upto 192 digitals or 96 analogs per controller orany mix between the two extremes.
Advant Controller 70 is asmall and compact processcontroller that can be laidout in a virtually infinitenumber of ways.

Advant Controller 110Advant Controller 110 is a rack- and board-based process controller offering the samecontrol and communication functions asAdvant Controller 70 does, Modbus 3964Rplus support for RCOM, ABB's protocol forserial communication over permanent orswitched telecommunication lines.
The Advant Fieldbus 100 interfaces supportdual bus redundancy as standard, providinginstant and bumples change-over in case ofbus cable breakage, etc.
Advant Controller 110 is fast; it can executeapplication programs with cycle times asshort as 2 ms, making the unit particularlywell suited to demanding logic controlapplications.
Remote data acquisitionABB's communication protocol RCOMfacilitates long-distance communication withremote terminals over dedicated or dial-uptelecommunication lines. In this way, AdvantController 110 can serve as the central pointof a cost-effective data acquisition/telecontrol system, with Advant Controller110 or Advant Controller 55 as remoteterminals.
Advant Controller 110 is thelarger process controllerwith higher processingspeed and greater commu-nication capabilities.
By time-tagging events atthe source, the controllersfacilitate accurate sequentialevents recording, making itpossible to easily pinpointthe primary reasons for trou-ble.LM

Tough enough to take what comes
Advant Controller 70Advant Controller 70 is modularly designed,consisting of passive module terminationunits (MTUs) mounted side by side onstandard DIN rails. These MTUs extend theinternal communication bus incrementally
and provide screw terminals for all in- andoutgoing cables. Process I/O modules,plugged onto the MTUs, provide the inter-face required to the outside world.Installation can hardly be simpler:
Hook the MTU onto the topedge of the mounting railand snap the bottom latchinto place. A contact springprovides grounding auto-matically.
Plug the I/O unit onto theMTU. The installation proc-ess takes not more than aminute.
Extended MTUs provide fuses and terminals, eliminating theneed for external cable marshalling. Cables with up to 4 mm2
cores can be terminated directly.
The I/O modules can be mounted vertically or horizontally ona single rail or be distributed across several, in the latter caseusing plug-in interconnecting cables.

Advant Controller 110Advant Controller 110 consists of 19" racks inwhich power supply, processor, communica-tion and process I/O boards are plugged in.All boards are enclosed in sheet metal coverswhich protect against electromagnetic inter-ference inside the rack and rough handlingoutside it. The process cables are terminatedon multi-pole connectors that plug in on thefront of the boards. Below the boards, at thefront, there is a duct for process cables.

Both the system softwareand the application programare stored in non-volatileread/write Flash-PROM, en-suring that the controllernever suffers from loss ofmemory. Yet it is easy tochange or update the pro-gram during commissioningor at any time with a port-able PC or an AdvaSoft forWindows operator station.
The programs look thesame on paper as on thescreen. That is particularlyimportant when it is time fordebugging; Then, the paperprovides overview and thescreen detail, including liveupdating of signal valuesand back-tracking of logicsignals to the source.
Application programs aredeveloped graphically sheetby sheet in the AdvaBuild forWindows, by laying out re-quired blocks and then con-necting them to other blocksand to process inputs andoutputs.
