2. Advances in Transportation andCommunication Technologies Today, modern transportation systems (e.g. air, rail road, water, underground) facilitate movement of people and goods withcountries, and from one country to another, vast geographicdistances can be covered in far less time, with less cost, and withgreater ease than in the past. Rapid trains, jet crafts, modernhighways, high-speed ferries and other advanced forms oftransport are all making it possible for travelers, services andproducts to move between countries and continents in recordnumbers. These transportation enhancements are bolsteringeconomic growth, socio-political ties and intercultural contact (e.g.tourism, business, educational exchange). This unprecedented population mobility is enabling moreintercultural interaction both within nations and across borders.Technological developments in transport and communication aremaking it possible for people from diverse language and culturalbackgrounds to interact more easily and frequently than everbefore. Nowadays, we are in more contact with people from othercultural backgrounds than at any time in human history. 12 3. Advances in Transportation andCommunication Technologies Human societies around the world have established continuouslycloser contacts over many centuries. Recently, the need ofglobalization has increased. Advance technologies incommunications, transportation, and computer have given theprocess new movement and made the world more interdependentthan ever. 2 Multinational corporations manufacture products in manycountries and sell to consumers around the world. Raw materials, money and technology move more swiftly across the world. Therefore laws, social movements, and economies are forming atthe international level. Since 1981, the word Globalization hasbeen used by economists; however, until the latter half of the1980's and 1990's its concepts did not become popular.Globalization has been defined by many scholars in different ways. Its Worldwide movement toward economic, financial, trade, andcommunications integration.33 4. The Effects of Advances in TransportationTechnology on Global Business1- Faster Speed of Delivery:The term "transportation technology" refers to all advancementssince the invention of the wheel. However, the invention of railtransport was the turning point for international trade. Itallowed fast delivery of goods within days or weeks instead ofmonths, as was the case with carriages. The invention of theinternal combustion engine made trade possible in places notserved by railway. Furthermore, modern cargo airplanes havemade it possible to transport goods between continents in amatter of hours.2. Sensor Telemetry:A major concern for businesses from the time they authorize a shipmentuntil they receive feedback from the buyer is the condition ofthe products and the progress of the delivery. Digital wirelesssensor telemetry technology now provides senders withinformation on the cargo en route, including its destination, thespeed at which it is moving, and the temperature of itsenvironment. 4 5. The Effects of Advances in TransportationTechnology on Global BusinessThis technology allows businesses to track shipments andcommunicate with a shipping company in case of delays orharmful conditions for the goods.3- Accessibility of International Trade:Faster transportation methods have made exports an importantaspect for businesses seeking to expand into new markets.Companies for which domestic demand is not sufficient, such asMicrosoft, Apple or Samsung in South Korea, rely on fast andreliable transportation options for continued growth. Accordingformer New Jersey Secretary of Agriculture, Charles M.Kuperus, international trade allowed agricultural businesses tocontribute $68.7 billion to the U.S. economy in 2006.4- Globalization in Production:Product instructions are most often written in multiple languagesthese days. Since technological advancements in transportationhave made international trade easier and faster in recentdecades, companies have focused on making their productsattractive and accessible to consumers of diverse markets.45 6. The Effects of Advanced Technology onCommunication Advances in technology have significantly impacted the way wecommunicate in both our personal and professional lives. Whileemail, Instant Messaging (IM), texting and other forms of quickelectronic communication may have diminished face-to-faceinteraction, they've also made communication faster and moreefficient. The speed of email compared to letter mail and postingcontent online compared to print publishing are just some of theeffects that technology has had on the way we communicate.51- Hyper-connectivity:For better or worse, people are now able to stay in constantcontact, with one another thanks to the advances in technologythat have brought us social media. Twitter, Facebook, IMing andtexting have let us communicate quicker and more frequentlyfrom any location where an Internet connection is accessible. For those who use handheld devices for both work and personalcommunication, this hyper-connectivity can result in a blurring ofboundaries between their work lives and personal lives. Emailsand calls are answered from work just as work calls and emailsare answered from home.6 7. The Effects of Advanced Technology onCommunication2- Cost-savings:Thanks to the advances in technology that have brought us callingcards and websites like Skype, which allow users to call oneanother for free, telecommunications have become moreaffordable. Advanced technology has also given us handhelddevices that combine services such as phone, fax, email andInternet can also eliminate the need to purchase devices and paybills for each separate mode of communication.3- Obscured Grammar and Spelling:Interaction via texts, IM and Twitter, which all encourage short-formcommunication, has necessitated a type of tech shorthandreferred to as "text lingo," which includes abbreviations andemoticons. In some cases, students who have grown up using textlingo in their personal correspondence have attempted to transferit to their academic assignments as well, to their own detriment.7 8. The Effects of Advanced Technology onCommunication4- Broken Language Barriers:People who once had to rely on translation dictionaries tocommunicate with those who speak different languages nowhave more options thanks to advances in technology. They canpurchase handheld instant translation devices, use instanttranslators online, or simply change their browser settings totranslate websites into various languages.5- Accessibility for Persons with Disabilities:In addition to the increasing prevalence of videos online toaccompany written news stories, many word processors nowfeature audio functions that read text aloud, allowing betteraccessibility for the visually impaired. People with hearingdisabilities have also benefited from alternative modes ofcommunication that are easier for the hearing impaired thantelephone communication, like email, text and videoconferencing.68 9.
