    WHAT SPORT TEACHES CHILDREN

Many parents think that their children can learn a lot about good values and behaviour through sport. And it

is certainly true that sport can teach children about such things as teamwork complying with the rules o!

how something is done !air play and decency towards others. "owever they also !ind that these good

values are o!ten contradicted when children watch sports on #V. $ro!essional sports people and coaches

sometimes don%t e&hibit the standards o! behaviour and !air play that parents hope their children will learn

and show when they are playing sports and indeed in all other areas o! li!e. 'hile watching sports on #V

the chances are that children will see pro!essional players cheating having tantrums !ighting or abusing

o!!icials such as re!erees. (n addition it is highly likely that children will be aware o! well)known cases o!

sports people being caught using drugs to improve their per!ormance.

#he danger o! all this is that it could give children the idea that winning is all that counts and that the key

point about sport is that you should win at all costs. Good behaviour and !air play aren%t the message that

comes across. (nstead it looks as i! cheating and bad behaviour are per!ectly reasonable ways o! getting

what you want. #his message is rein!orced by the !act that some o! these sports people ac*uire enormous

!ame and wealth making it seem that they are being handsomely rewarded either despite or because o!

    their bad behaviour.

'hat can parents do about this+ 'ell they can regard sport on television as a good opportunity to discuss

attitudes and behaviour with their children both in sport and in li!e in general. #hey can sit down and watch

the sport with the child. (! the child likes a particular team or player !ind out what it is about that team or

player that appeals to the child. (! you see a player swearing at the re!eree get the child%s opinion on that

behaviour. ,iscuss whether that player%s skill is more important than their behaviour. Ask what the child

thinks the player%s contribution to the team is - how should the player be behaving in that situation is the

player displaying a good attitude towards teamwork+ $oint out that no player can win a team game on their

own and that it%s important !or team members to work well together.

Another thing to !ocus on is what the commentators say. ,o they !rown on bad behaviour !rom players

think it%s *uite amusing or even seem to think it%s a positively good thing+ 'hat do the o!!icials do about

bad behaviour+ (! they seem to let players get away with it parents can discuss with children whether this

is right or not and what e!!ect it has on the game. (! they punish a player perhaps by sending him o!!

parents can discuss with children the conse*uences o! bad behaviour both !or that player and his

teammates. And look too at the reactions o! coaches and managers. ,o they accept losing with good graceor scowl and show a bad attitude to it+ $arents can use this to discuss attitudes to winning and losing and

to remind children that both are part o! sport - nobody can win all the time.

"owever what children can learn !rom watching sports is by no means all about the negatives and parents

should make sure they accentuate the positives too. #hey should emphasie to children the high reputation

that well)behaved players have not /ust with their teammates but also with spectators and the media. #hey

can !ocus on the contribution made by such players during a game discussing how valuable they are in the

team. #he message !rom this is that you can be the best possible player without any kind o! bad behaviour.

(n the interviews a!ter a game they can point out to a child that the well)behaved players don%t gloat when

they win or sulk when they lose. $arents can draw attention to well)behaved sports people who achieve

great !ame and wealth showing that a good attitude can lead to enormous success. And they can draw

attention to how well these people conduct themselves in their personal lives and the good work they do !or

others when they are not playing. (n other words parents should get their children to !ocus on the positive

role models rather than the antics o! the badly behaved but o!ten more publicied players.
