• Electronic sensors for chemical and odor detection • Biomedical diagnostic sensors

Description: ChemSensing manufactures systems for the detection of diseases through the sampling of breath or the headspace of urine. Recently the technology has been extended to sense enzymatic reactions in the presence of anti-bodies. Our technology uses a metalloporphyrin dye array that changes color in response to volatile organic compounds. A unique color change is determined after exposure to different analytes that present only during disease states and is used to accurately identify bacteria, cancerous tumors and hepatotoxins. An everyday example of color change is when the metalloporphyrins in venous blood (blue) change when exposed to oxygen (red). The technology is exceptionally sensitive because our proprietary metalloporphyrins are highly reactive to volatile organic compounds. ChemSensing is located in Northbrook and Champaign, IL, and has an exclusive license from the University of Illinois.

Year Established: 1987 Product:

• Mathematica software and related applications

Description: Wolfram Research's leadership in technical computing stems from its ability to set the direction for new technology. The Wolfram Group is characterized by an individualistic approach, a deep respect for the Mathematica user base and users' suggestions, as well as, the constant search for good general approaches rather than quick fixes or purely cosmetic "solutions." With our lively, informal atmosphere and our flat organizational structure, we are more like a research department than a typical company. Under the leadership of Stephen Wolfram, scientist, entrepreneur, and inventor, the Wolfram Group consists of four companies: Wolfram Research, Inc. and Wolfram Media, Inc. in the United States, Wolfram Research Europe Ltd. in the United Kingdom, and Wolfram Research Asia Ltd. in Japan. While remaining privately held, Wolfram Research has been continuously profitable and has thus been able to fund unusually long-term R & D projects and to port Mathematica, its flagship product, to a wide selection of operating systems.

CHAMPAIGN COUNTY ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION HIGH-TECH PROGRAMS & SERVICES

Business Visitation Program Due to the large concentration of high-tech companies in Champaign County, the EDC has developed programs and services to specifically address the issues of this growing sector. One of the most important of these for high-tech companies is through the Business Visitation Program. Under this program, representatives from the EDC, University of Illinois and local municipalities jointly visit more than 100 companies in Champaign County annually to gather information, strengthen relationships and identify the issues which may be inhibiting business growth and expansion. To assist in business development and expansion opportunities, the EDC also serves as the key agency to facilitate meetings for local companies to meet other businesses and organizations in Champaign County and abroad. Bi-monthly meetings are hosted to bring members of the business, educational and research communities together to review and develop countywide, high-tech initiatives that will result in additional research funding for the community. The EDC provides assistance and guidance at all stages of proposal development and procures support for these initiatives at the local, county, state and federal levels of government. Other EDC high-tech programs and services focus on:

Facilitating monthly networking events Distribution of a monthly newsletter Retention of the highly skilled and technical workforce Representing the interests of and advocating on behalf of the high-tech community Coordinating regular meetings to address challenges facing the high-tech sector Providing information on professional development and funding opportunities Marketing the technologies, research and high-tech industry in Champaign County
