Advanced Sandplay Seminar 2020 The Practice of the Image: Alchemical Symbolism and Process in Sandplay Therapy We dissolve, then become solid in a new form, again and again; this is the process of change. “The spirit of Jung’s practice of the image as embodied in his Red Book is more present today in sandplay than in transference-based analysis.” --- Sonu Shamdasani, ed., The Red Book Course description Jung discovered that the old alchemical texts reflected not a valid physical science, but rather were a complex set of metaphors for the process of psychic development. This course examines the alchemical symbols and processes that Jung believed reflected this process he called individuation, the lifelong by which we grow and realize our full potential. Sandplay therapy and alchemy are analogous in that the foundations of both are process and image. This course will focus on how alchemy illuminates the individuation process and how the Jungian archetypes are constellated in sandplay images. Our aim is to discern the parallels in the three realms of alchemy, archetype, and sandplay. In the first session, the instructor’s presentation will cover core alchemical concepts and how these manifest in psychotherapy and sandplay. We will use a clinical sandplay case to explore the concepts of the prima materia, calcinatio, solutio, coagulatio, sublimatio, mortificatio, separatio, coniunctio, and the nigredo-albedo-rubedo. Over the remaining sessions the seminar participants will work in small groups to explore these concepts in the sandplay images and will present their work to the group.

Both of the supplemental volumes explore the Jungian/alchemical meanings of a series of images. Prerequisites Participants must have completed, at a minimum, some personal sandplay process of their own as well as some coursework in the Fundamentals of sandplay therapy; or, by permission of instructor.
