Summer Assignment #1: Purchase Art Supplies (10 pts.)

As a serious art student, there are supplies you will need/want to purchase for next year and subsequent years as an artist. You must purchase your own individual supplies so they are always available to you (no sharing purchases with another classmate).

Required purchases: Three sheets of white/cream/black mat board (32”X40”). Make

sure you buy thick mat board. Do not buy poster board, illustration board, or Bristol board by mistake!

Drawing Pencil Set (at least HB to 8B) Prismacolor Colored Pencils (minimum set of 48 required for

AP, strongly suggested but not required for Portfolio. Must be Prismacolor brand)

Large Kneaded Eraser Alvin Eraser (triangle eraser) X-Acto Knife with Extra Blades (pencil size, to be kept at home) Rubber Cutting Mat (optional, but suggested)

Suggested purchases: Point-and-shoot Digital Camera to take high-quality reference

photographs (if you don’t have access to a camera other than the one on your phone, please see your teacher)

Hard Cover Portfolio – minimum size 22”x26” for college presentations and transporting artwork to and from home

Supplies can be purchase at AC Moore (use the discount coupons online), Utrecht Art Supply in Philly, Amazon.com, or even Ebay.com.

Teacher will check for these materials, or the sales receipt(s), on the first Friday of the school year! You must somehow show evidence that you purchased these supplies.

Summer Assignment #2: Digital Resource File (100 pts.)

Purpose:Keeping a resource file is crucial for your success in this course. AP Studio Art guidelines state that only on rare occasion may you use others’ photographs as references for your artwork; if you do so, you must drastically alter them. Along with the obvious purpose of reference photos (drawing a subject matter with accurate scale and proportions), they can be used to generate new ideas for portfolio pieces. It’s important to take these photos over the summer, when you may be in new or different settings, to achieve good variety. If you travel outside of the HH community to the city, the beach, the country, etc., bring your camera along and take photos for your resource file. This will give you a variety of subject matters to choose from to create your pieces.

Assignment Criteria:Take a minimum amount of photos for each of the following 10 categories:

1. Nature Studies (10 photos)2. Architectural Studies (10 photos)3. Interior/Exterior Studies (5 photos)4. Kitchen Still-lifes (5 photos)5. Intimate Portraits (5 photos)6. Visual Illusions (5 photos)7. Childhood Games (5 photos)8. Variety Pack (20 photos)9. Concentration Study 1 (15 photos)10.Concentration Study 2 (15 photos)

Your Own Photos: You need to take your own photos for every section. (Do NOT try to pass off Internet images as your own, b/c I will look at the metadata for each photo.)

Uploading to Flickr: You’ll each be expected to create a free account on Flickr and upload your photos into separate albums with titles matching each photo category in the rubric. Flickr is an image-hosting website where you can share photos, or keep them private. (Flickr does not own the rights to your photos.) Follow the tutorial in this packet to create your digital resource file in Flickr.

Point value: Each required photo or image is worth 1 point of your overall grade. The minimum requirement is listed for each category. You may take more photos than what is listed.

Quality: All photographs within your resource file are expected to be of good quality. It is highly suggested that you take pictures with an actual camera as opposed to a phone camera. Make sure you practice using your camera and making sure it’s on the highest quality setting before taking and uploading your pictures.

o Slightly blurry or grainy photos will not receive higher than half-credito Very blurry or grainy photos will not receive any credit

4

Page 5: Advanced Placement Studio Art€¦  · Web view2014-06-02 · Make sure you practice using your camera and making sure it’s on the highest quality setting ... Create a drawing

Composition: Consider the compositional techniques of each of your photos as you are shooting, rather than simply documenting something by taking a snapshot. Don’t include any negative space that doesn’t need to be there. Zoom in whenever possible to create emphasis. Shoot from a variety of angles. Work with your lighting.

o Photos with poor compositional quality may be subject to point deductions

What is a Concentration? Two of the categories in the rubric focus on taking photographs for a possible concentration idea. A concentration is a body of related works based on an individual’s interest in a particular idea expressed visually. It focuses on a process of investigation, growth, and discovery. Students are encouraged to explore a personal, central interest as intensively as possible, and are free to work with any medium. The artworks within a concentration should be unified by an underlying idea that has visual coherence.

You will come up with two possible concentration ideas and take 15 reference photographs for each idea. Remember that the photos are only for your reference; you do not have to draw directly from the photos. You are not bound to either of these concentration ideas when it comes time to begin your concentration. This is part of the brainstorming process. With that in mind, you should still try to come up with strong ideas that you could potentially use, as it might save you time later. You’ll need to consider how the artwork you would create relates to either a Drawing or 2D Design portfolio. Notice that the 2D Design examples listed here are more conceptual:

Drawing Portfolio Concentration ExamplesStruggles of the black culture through timeFears that I have grown up with through portraitureBuildings of a city-expressive qualities through color schemesDoors of a cityA walk through the woods looking downFamily events that have impacted my lifeRandom acts of kindnessMovements of the 1970’sMy life with addictionPoverty of the cityStill life renderings of the belongings of a deceased family memberActivities showing the hand and feet in motion12-step program through portraiture

Tutorial- Creating Your Digital Resource File on Flickr

Creating your resource file digitally is a requirement of this course, and you are expected to make accommodations this summer to do so. You will need a computer and Internet access to complete this tutorial to set up your Flickr account, upload photos, and organize them into the appropriate albums. (If you don’t have access at your house, visit your local library.) You can complete this tutorial at any time during the summer, even if you’ve just taken photos for one of the sections of the rubric. Give yourself an hour or two to work your way through all of the steps.

It is important that you read all the directions carefully, and don’t skip steps! If you struggle with any part of the tutorial, go back to the beginning of a Step and try it again. If you troubleshoot on your own for a while and cannot seem to get something to work, you may email me with questions at [email protected] (allow at least a week-and-a-half turn-around time for answers to your questions).

Creating your resource file digitally is much more efficient and cost-effective then the old method (a binder with dozens of printed images, tabs, plastic sleeves, etc.). In the long run, this will make your life much easier this summer! Good luck, and I can’t wait to see your amazing photos in the fall!

Step 1: Create a free Flickr account

Go to www.flickr.com

Click “Sign up” in the top left corner of the screen.

You’ll need to create a free Yahoo account on the next screen to sign up. But once you do that, you can login to Flickr in the future with your Google or Facebook information, so don’t worry! However, make sure you write down your information for your Yahoo username and password somewhere safe.

Once you’ve filled in your information, click Create Account.

Wait 10 seconds, and Yahoo will redirect you to the “Welcome to Flickr” screen where you may change any information, including your username that will show up on the site.

When you are ready, click Next.

You will then be given the option to connect your Flickr account to Facebook. This is optional! If you do not want to do so, click the “Take me to flickr” tab in the bottom right corner.

8

Page 9: Advanced Placement Studio Art€¦  · Web view2014-06-02 · Make sure you practice using your camera and making sure it’s on the highest quality setting ... Create a drawing

Step 2: How to sign into Flickr in the future

You will already be signed in after completing Step 1. But if you want to sign back in to Flickr in the future, you can either use your new Yahoo account information, or your Google or Facebook information (which may be easier for you to remember).

If you need to sign back in, click the Sign In link at the top right of the page. You now have the following sign-in options:

Step 3: Download the Flickr App for your smartphone (OPTIONAL)

If you’d like to easily send photos from your smartphone to your online Flickr account, you can do so by downloading the app (later versions of the iPhone already have the app).

When attempting to sign in, remember you can use Yahoo, Facebook, or Google info.

It will give you the option of syncing all photos in your phone with your Flickr account. Only do this if you want to use Flickr for personal photo sharing.

Once you’ve set up the app, you can select a photo or group of photos from your phone’s gallery, and Flickr will appear in the Share options as this icon:

Step 4: Adjust your Flickr settings to make your photos private

Because you will be creating artwork with some of these photos, you will want to make them private so that others cannot use them. If your photos stay public, there’s a

chance that another artist can use one of your photos to create artwork. This opens up a whole can of worms that you don’t want to deal with… That being said, if you already have a Flickr account and you want it to remain public, that is your decision, and you can skip ahead to the next Step.

On the Flickr home page (after you are logged in), hover over the colorful camera icon in the top right corner of the screen, and some options will appear:

Click on the Settings tab.

Under the info for “Your Account,” click on the Privacy and Permissions Tab.

Click “edit” to the right of each item below, and choose the options highlighted here:

11

Page 12: Advanced Placement Studio Art€¦  · Web view2014-06-02 · Make sure you practice using your camera and making sure it’s on the highest quality setting ... Create a drawing

If you’ve made these changes, your photos should remain private. If you link your Flickr account to Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, or another 3rd party site, realize that this may enable others to “steal” your photos and use them for any purpose they choose.

You may change or edit the information in the other tabs under Settings as you wish.

Return to the Flickr homepage by clicking the black Flickr icon in the top left corner of the page.

Step 5: Upload photos into your account

There are several ways to upload your photos and organize them into albums. Once you’ve explored the site, you might develop a preference for doing things differently then this tutorial does, which is fine. But the important thing to remember is that you can’t create an album unless you put at least one photo in it.

First, get your photos off of your device and onto your computer:

If you took photos with a digital camera: Upload them to your computer with the USB cord that came with the device, or an external card reader, or place the memory card into the correct slot on your computer (most newer computers have these slots; older ones might not). Create a folder on your computer or a flash drive, and save the photos there.

If you took photos with your smart phone or tablet: Upload them to your computer with the USB cord that came with the device, or “share” them from your photo gallery directly to Flickr (only if you’ve downloaded the app), or email them to yourself and upload them that way. If you aren’t sharing directly to Flickr, create a folder on your computer or a flash drive, and save the photos there.

12

Page 13: Advanced Placement Studio Art€¦  · Web view2014-06-02 · Make sure you practice using your camera and making sure it’s on the highest quality setting ... Create a drawing

o If you shared photos via the Flickr app, your photos will already be in your Flickr account and you can skip to the next Step.

To upload photos from your computer to your account, click the Upload tab:

The prompt says, “Drag & drop photos and videos here or Choose photos and videos.” You can decide which option you’d like to use. If you click on “Choose photos and videos,” it will take you to your file browser, and you can search for the correct folders. You can add multiple photos from a folder at the same time by holding Shift or Ctrl when you click on photos.

Do not exit this page without clicking the blue “Upload Photos” tab in the top right corner:

Once you’ve completed the uploading process, you will be redirected to your account page.

Step 6: Create albums and sort photos

From your account page, click the Albums tab at the top:

Click on the Add New Album option.

On the left side of the next page, you will name each album. Use these titles from the grading rubric for each album (10 albums total):

Nature Studies Architectural Studies Interior/Exterior Studies Kitchen Still-lifes Intimate Portraits Visual Illusions Childhood Games Variety Pack Concentration Study 1 – Title of your idea Concentration Study 2 – Title of your idea

o Example: Concentration Study 2 - Fears that I have grown up with through portraiture

At the bottom of the page, you can drag and drop your photos into an album.

Click Save (on the left side of the page) once you’ve updated the album.

13

Page 14: Advanced Placement Studio Art€¦  · Web view2014-06-02 · Make sure you practice using your camera and making sure it’s on the highest quality setting ... Create a drawing

Your albums will show up on the screen, and you’ll have the option to add more albums. Here’s an example of what this looks like in my account:

Step 7: Share your digital resource file with the teacher

When you are finished adding all of your photos, you’ll share a link with me through email.

Return to the Flickr homepage by clicking the black Flickr icon in the top left corner of the page.

Hover over the You tab, and select Albums:

You will be redirected to a page with all of your albums displayed:

14

Click here to make your next album

Page 15: Advanced Placement Studio Art€¦  · Web view2014-06-02 · Make sure you practice using your camera and making sure it’s on the highest quality setting ... Create a drawing

Copy and paste the link in your address bar into an email addressed to me at: [email protected]

The link in my address bar looks something like this (yours will be different!): https://secure.flickr.com/photos/124893263@N05/sets

Note: If you have personal photo albums in your Flickr account that you don’t want me to see, I assure you that I will not click on any other albums, only the ones with the appropriate titles listed in the previous Step. However, if you’d like to ensure that I cannot view any personal albums, you can change the privacy preferences for each individual album.

Step 8: Complete your digital resource file by the due date

You must email me the link to your resource file no later than the beginning of class on the first Friday of the school year!

Once you’ve emailed your link, do NOT add any more photos or albums until you receive a grade for your resource file. All uploaded photos come with metadata showing the date and time they were uploaded. If you are caught adding additional photos after the due date before receiving your assignment grade, you will not only get no credit for the added photos, but you’ll be docked an extra point for each one that was added “illegally.”

Summer Assignment #3: Artists of Inspiration (20 pts.)

Purpose:As you develop your own artistic style, it’s important to familiarize yourself with a variety of contemporary artists (current, working artists) to get inspired. You will do some research and exploration online or elsewhere to find “artists of inspiration.” Look for artists whose work you admire for any reason whatsoever, and may want to emulate. Maybe you like the overall aesthetic of their work. Maybe you want to explore collage, and one artist’s collage style really stands out to you as something you want to mimic. While you will never directly copy the work of a particular artist, you will use methods, techniques, and composition ideas that were inspired by other artists for each project you do in this course.

Assignment Criteria:You will find a minimum of 20 images of contemporary artists’ work that inspire you. Each image is worth 1 point. Here are all the criteria

Images are copied/pasted into a Word document. Place 2 images on each page.

5 images- from a favorite artist of inspiration 15 images- from at least 15 other artists of inspiration

o Artists must be professional, not other students Name of each artist and title of work included under all images All images should be of good quality (pixeled, blurry, or graining images

will lose points)

Also, you’ll want to save all images on a flash drive so you can access them digitally at your convenience. You may NOT upload them to Flickr (it’s against their policy to upload any image that doesn’t belong to you). Eventually, you may want to use some of these artists as “artists of reference” for specific course projects, so you’ll want to make sure you can access your files at any time.

Your Artists of Inspiration document must be submitted in printed or digital form (placed in my teacher Inbox with your last name in the file name) by the due date. Penalty for late submission is -2 pts. per day.

Suggested Artists:Bonnie AutenAgnes Cecile

Summer Assignment #4: Sketchbook/Creative Journal Pages (20 pts.)

Purpose:Working in a sketchbook is an ongoing process that will help you make informed and critical decisions about the progress of your work. You will experiment with new techniques you can eventually use in a piece of artwork, and come up with ideas and concepts you may choose to explore further. Your sketchbook is the perfect place to try a variety of concepts and techniques as you develop your own voice and style.

Assignment Criteria:Your mission is to fill a minimum of 10 pages of your sketchbook with a variety of life drawings and designs. At least 5 pages need to include some form of life or representational drawing (i.e. recognizable objects drawn with accuracy). The sketchbook you will purchase should be your “new best friend” this summer. You need to carry it with you every day, everywhere! Open it up first thing in the morning and last thing at night and many times in between. Draw in it, write in it, scribble in it, paint in it, glue objects into it, cut the pages, tear the pages, change the way it looks to make it look like your own book, etc.. At the end of the summer, it should reflect YOU and your experiences throughout the summer.

Sketchbook pages will not be graded using AP Studio Art grading criteria. Rather, they will be evaluated based on the variety of subject matter and techniques you applied, and the amount of risk-taking you attempted.

“Art journaling is about the {creative process} of pulling together color, words and images as you wish on a page. Unlike many other forms of art, it is not about the outcome.”-Tammy Garcia

Size requirements for sketchbook: minimum 5”x7”; maximum 11”X14”If you purchase a larger sketchbook, you are still expected to use the entire page! If you block off a smaller portion of the page, you will not get full-credit!

Pages from your Art Major II creative journal will not count towards this assignment. You must create brand new pages from scratch. Those who are caught trying to pass off their AM2 pages for this assignment receive no credit for the whole assignment!

Creative Journal Ideas and Prompts:Sometimes the hardest part of this process is coming up with ideas for your pages. For some pages, you may choose to free-sketch or draw from life. But you may want inspiration to try new things. Use these resources (and other internet resources you find on your own) to help you generate ideas:

RULES FOR WORKING IN YOUR SKETCHBOOK :

ALWAYS FILL the page you are working on. Go off the edges whenever possible. Do not make dinky little drawings in the center of the page. Make every square inch count for something.

Don’t start with a white page…collage, paint a wash, splatter paint, etc. to create a background to begin with.

Do not start something and abandon it. Go back later, change it…make it into something else. Being able to rescue bad beginning is the sign of a truly creative mind. Always finish what you start no matter how much you don’t like it.

Put the date on every page you finish.

DO NOT DRAW FROM OTHER’S PHOTOGRAPHS, magazines, etc. The use of published photographs or the work of other artists for duplication is plagiarism. Draw from observation, things you see in the world, or photos you took yourself. If you do use someone’s photo as a reference, make sure you are significantly changing it somehow. Learn to translate the dynamic three-dimensional world into a two-dimensional world.

NO CUTE, PRETTY, PRECIOUS, ADORABLE, or TRITE images. AP Studio Art is a college-level art class, not a recreation program to make pretty pictures to hang in your house. Expect your ideas about what makes good art to be challenged.

Don’t be boring with your work. Challenge us! Take risks with media and techniques!

Avoid showing your work to others unless you know they are going to understand what you are trying to do in your sketchbook. You don’t need negative feedback when you are trying out new ideas or experimenting. This is a place for risk taking. Don’t invite criticism unless you are confident that it won’t derail your free spirit. You won’t have to show your classmates, only your teacher.

Make decisions about what you do based on how things look. Go for the tough look, not the easy solution. Do not be trite (unoriginal)… say something important about the world you live in.

Express yourself! Work to develop mastery in concept, composition, and execution of your ideas.

TIPS AND TRICKS FOR BEING CREATIVE :

Use pencils, pens, sticks, charcoal, burnt matches, pastel, watercolor, acrylic, pine straw, fingers, basically anything that will make a mark. You have the power to make a mark.

Use gesture, line, and value in your drawings. Try to create a sense of light and depth in your images.

Use the principles of perspective to show depth in a drawing.

Glue stuff into your sketchbook, i.e., ticket stubs, gum wrappers, tin foil, lace, lists, receipts, sand, leaves, twigs, pebbles, shells, earrings, shoe laces, whatever. Make a collage with the stuff. Add these things to pages that you started but don’t like. Let your imagination go wild.

Build the pages up by layering things, paint on top of collage, newspaper, and drawing, Attach pieces of fabric and photographs and paint over parts of them. What did you do? What are you trying to say?

Take a news story and interpret it visually, use abstraction to express an idea.

Play around with geometric and organic forms, interlocking and overlapping to create an interesting composition. Use color to finish the work.

18

Page 19: Advanced Placement Studio Art€¦  · Web view2014-06-02 · Make sure you practice using your camera and making sure it’s on the highest quality setting ... Create a drawing

Take a selfie, and create a self-portrait using synectic design, or Cubism, or Impressionism, or Minimalism, or Pop Art, etc.

Create a drawing of the interior of your room but add collage elements for the lamps, and furniture. Glue sheer fabric over the collage. Draw an image of yourself moving around the room onto the sheer fabric.

Make gesture drawings from observation of the figure.

Make contour drawings from observation of anything around you. Remember to use the whole page! Fill the space behind the objects you draw. Make it count for something.

Make a simple contour drawing of an arrangement of objects. Repeat the drawing four times. Explore different color schemes in each of the four drawings. Write about how the color changes the feeling in each image.

Artist Statement Instructions:An artist statement allows the viewer to gain insight into the thoughts the artist had in the process of creating an artwork. You’ll write several artist statements this semester. This process will also give you more experience writing about your artwork, which will be helpful when you have to write your concentration commentary next year. Artist statements for specific projects will be worth a maximum of 5 points, and should follow these criteria:

Formatting: One page or less, double-spaced, 12 pt. font, 1” margins Proofread! If there are more than 5 major errors with spelling, grammar,

or syntax, you will lose a point from your grade.

Content: Describe the choice of subject matter and how you chose to portray it (the

intent of the piece) Identify the media you chose to use, and describe why you chose it. Describe how you used at least three Elements and Principles of Design

within your Composition. Include the name of your artist of reference, and describe what choices

you made in your piece that reflect their style or technique Include a color image of your artist of reference within the body of the

document (if this makes the document longer than one page, that’s OK). Explain your personal feelings about the piece.

Things to avoid: Writing statements such as, “For this project, I rendered an egg…” Do not

describe your artwork as “projects.” Making blanket statements about liking or disliking a piece. Instead,

pinpoint specific aspects of the piece that are successful, and aspects that could use improvement.

Some of you may want access to Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator this summer to create your artwork, especially if you are doing a 2D Design portfolio
