CONVERSATION CLASS INTRODUCTION

WHY IS ENGLISH IMPORTANT/OUR GOALSWelcome to English Conversation class. My name is Bryan Bissell and we are going to learn a lot of useful and interesting things this term together.

Each of you has been given freedom, creative potential and an incredible power to learn facts, think about truth and act on it to improve and change your life and the world around you. It is the purpose of education to develop that power so you can solve challenges, influence character, earn a living, be successful and be leaders in different spheres of society. Make an effort to be thinkers, not just reflectors of other men's thoughts.

The classes you attend are not just preparation for your future. They are life encounters. Your time is valuable and short. So use each class to learn as much as you can so that in the future, you can teach others. Read a lot, ask questions a lot, share your experiences and opinions. It is by interacting with others and being open that you will learn the most.

Knowing English well is very important & will give you many advantages. With English, you can:1) get better jobs and career options.2) know important information. Information is power!

Mother Mouse was crossing a path in the woods with her three little babies. She noticed a big cat crouching behind a bush.  The cat eyeballed Mother Mouse. Mother Mouse eyeballed the cat.  Then Mother Mouse bellowed out, "Woof, woof, woof."  The cat got so scared that it jumped up and ran away.  Mother Mouse proudly turned to her babies and said, "Now do you see the value of learning a second language?"

Since important information is often in English before it is other languages, knowing English will give you an important advantage which will give you more opportunities before others know about them.

3) get promotions and higher salaries (According to Business week magazine, English ability gives people a 35% higher salary on average.)

4) communicate with the world and express your opinions and knowledge as you wish. Don’t have to depend on translators who might make mistakes.

5) ead and understand new research and information in many areas.

6) travel easily in most countries.7) understand foreign humor and media and others..

We are going to work together to develop your skills in English and to help you achieve some of these goals. Our specific goals in this class are going to be: 1) To guarantee comprehension of specific grammar

structures in English.2) To practice and master these English grammatical

CONVERSATION CLASS INTRODUCTION (in K o rean) 왜 영어는 중요한가 / 우리의 목표 영어 회화수업에 오신걸 환영합니다. 저의 이름은 브라이언 비셸입니다. 우리는 유용하고 재미있는 것들을 이번 학기에 함께 배울 것 입니다.

Page 4: ADVANCED CONVERSATION LECTUREeslmission.truth-is-life.org/docs/esl/Kyungsung Syllabus fo…  · Web viewWeek 10 (5/7-11) Unit 8: Describing people looks /verb-like, dating hints

structures through various such as structured conversations, roleplays, readings, grammar activities, translation activities, games, songs, movies, real life situations & more.

3) To read, discuss and learn useful and stimulating things that will improve our lives and the lives of others.

CLASS OUTLINE & NECESSARY MATERIALSThe outline of our class is available online. We will follow many things in that. But, extra topics and activities may be added from time to time. YOU NEED: Textbook(s) (buy them at the bookstore), Internet Access, English-Korean/Korean English Dictionary, notebook, pens, etc.

GRADING SYSTEMThis is a basic summary of the grading system that I will use:1) ATTENDANCE & PARTICIPATION (10%): I will

mark your attendance everyday. 2 lates or 20 minutes late=1 absence. You should always be active in conversations, group activities, asking questions to the teacher, etc. If you are talking in Korean, not talking in English much, not participating much or things like that, I will subtract points. Doing the workbook will be 5% of this grade.

2) MIDTERM & FINAL TESTS (60%): Your midterm test will be 30% of the grade. Your final test will also be 30% of the grade.

3) CLASS WORK/HOMEWORK (30%): Your class work, homework and class quizzes (individual, with partners, in groups) will be 30% of your grade. Creativity is very important in most careers. So, on most assignments, 10-20% of your grade will be based on creativity, humor, persuasiveness, etc.

STRUCTURED/FREE WRITING CHECKING: Usually, we will check all structured work together as a class and the teacher will check all free writing work. This is because A) research says it’s more effective to check the work right after it’s done and B) so the teacher has more time to check free writing homework and create more valuable materials and activities.

GRADE MARKS AND MEANINGS (How I correct and how you should correct in class)This is how I grade and I expect students to grade in a similar way when you are grading each other. 0=perfect…no mistakes. Similar words are OK. -0=minor mistake(s). These will be mistakes with

articles (a, an, the), prepositions (in, at, of, to, in front of, etc), spelling mistakes and things like that.

=1 major mistake or 2 minor mistakes. Major mistakes are usually with tenses, esp. the 4 basic tenses (present, present continuous, past and future) and basic word order.

X=zero points. 1 major mistake with at least 2 other

관사(a. an. The), 전치사(in, at, of, to. In front of, etc), 철자를 틀렸을 경우가 이에 해당.● =1 큰 실수 또는 2 개 이상의 사소한 실수. 큰 실수는 시제를 틀렸을 경우, 특히 4 개 기초 시제(현재, 현재진행, 과거, 미래), 기초 단어 배열 실수가 이에 해당.

mistakes = zero points.

EXAMPLE A: I want to go to home. GRADE = -0 RIGHT: I want to go home.EXAMPLE B: I study hard yesterday. GRADE = RIGHT: I studIED hard yesterday.EXAMPLE C: I hard work in last week. GRADE = X RIGHT: I workED hard last week.EXAMPLE D: I’m going to my house.” GRADE = 0

Also OK, “I’m going home.”

QUIZZES: Besides the midterm and final tests, there will be other small quizzes. Sometimes, students will test each other in conversation and writing. Be careful to do this accurately and honestly. These are common ones: Written Grammar tests in English: After we have studied

a chapter, I may give tests with English questions or sentences. You will have to give English answers or questions that match.

Written Grammar tests in Korean/paragraphs: I may give a test where you have to translate from Korean to English or you have to decide which grammar structure to use in a paragraph. This test is the real test to see if you can make the structure correctly without any hints.

Spoken Mastery/Fluency Tests: This test is a spoken test which judges your fluency. With hints in English or Korean you will have to say the correct answers within a good time. This will help you to speak more at a natural speed.

Listening quizzes (songs, movies, book): From the book or songs or movies, we may have some listening quizzes from time to time.

SPEAKING ACTIVITIES: We will sometimes do speeches, role plays, presentations and similar activities to give you practice at free speaking and to see how well you can use the structures we have learned. In big classes, we may do a few group role plays. This means that groups will practice a roleplay. Then 1-2 people from each group will be chosen to act out the roleplay and the whole group will receive a score from that group. We will also do roleplays with 2-3 people acting out a situation in front and this will be graded.

WRITING ACTIVITIES: You will sometimes have written assignments where you will write about your experiences, opinions and sometimes write to persuade others of your opinions. Here especially creativity is very important. When written assignments are checked by the teacher, students must rewrite all sentences with mistakes in the correct way 2 times for full points. If sentences are not rewritten, no grade will be recorded.

Written assignments will be 50-100 points usually. In these assignments, you will lose 1-2 points for each small mistake (articles, prepositions, spelling, etc.). You will lose 3-5 points for each major mistake (esp. check your verbs and tenses carefully).

● X=0 점수. 적어도 2 개의 사소한 실수와 큰 실수를 했을 때.=점수 없음.예A: I want to go to home. 점수=-0 정답: I want to go home예 B: I study hard yesterday 점수= 정답: I stud IED hard yesterday. 예 C: I hard work in last week. 점수=X 정답: I work ED hard last week.예 D: I’m going to my house. 점수=0 Also ok., I’m going home.

CREATIVITY IS CRITICALWe live in an information and marketing age. Creativity is often highly paid (actors, singers, marketing consultants for example). So, ~20% of the grade for grammar sentences and essays and presentations will be from your creativity. Grammatical accuracy is very important…but so is creativity and content. Here are some ideas to think about in being creative:

1) FUNNY: Make funny or comical grammar questions: EX: When did you swallow a camel? 2) PERSONAL: Make questions about people’s personal lives or emotions or feelings: EX: How did you feel when you broke up with your girlfriend?3) CURRENT/CONTROVERSIAL ISSUES: Write questions or essays about current controversial issues. EX: How can we stop terrorists from kidnapping and killing innocent people?4) IDIOMS/PROVERBS: Make questions with idioms, proverbs or slang. Use these in essays/writings as well to get more points.5) COMPLEX GRAMMAR: Use complex grammar and integrate grammar patterns: Where do you have to go if you need relationship or marital counseling? 만약 당신이 친족이나 부부사이에 상담받을 일이 있다면 어디로 가야하나요? (this uses conditional and infinitive grammar together in one sentence)6) USE STORIES/HUMOR: Essays and articles are always much more interesting if they have a good story or humor in them. Try to find and include these in your writings.7) USE SCIENCE/STATISTICS: Stories are interesting. But, to convince people that you are talking about a problem that is affecting many people and that you know the cause and solutions of the problem, you need to use science and statistics. You can also use quotes from famous people to add credibility to your ideas.8) USE PICTURES/VIDEOS: You can illustrate your writings with pictures or add short videos/animations to your presentations. If they are appropriate and match your point, it can make your argument much more powerful.

ADVANCED STUDENTSIf you feel that you are an advanced student (because of studying overseas or much experience in studying English, etc.) please come to me and we can talk. If your tests or other evidence shows that you are very advanced, I may be able to arrange other assignments and activities that will help you more in your career and life.

OTHER IMPORTANT POINTSHere are a few other important points about homework and grading:1. Assignments will be graded according to grammar you

have been taught. If you make mistakes in things you have been taught, you will lose more points. So, be sure to check your work esp. about the grammar you have learned.

2. Students can check their own grades/scores on my grade sheet anytime you wish. Come to my office or talk to me

Page 7: ADVANCED CONVERSATION LECTUREeslmission.truth-is-life.org/docs/esl/Kyungsung Syllabus fo…  · Web viewWeek 10 (5/7-11) Unit 8: Describing people looks /verb-like, dating hints

after class or look on the grade sheet in class. Everyone is human and even I make mistakes once in a while, so check your grades AND KEEP YOUR HOMEWORK.

3. Written assignments must be double spaced so that the teacher can write corrections between the lines easily.

4. On all homework, please write your name, student number, class and the row that you are sitting in according to the grade card (Korean names are OK).

5. You will have a chart for conversation. During the semester, you should talk at least once with every other student in the class. After you talk with someone, ask them to sign their name on your chart. At the end of the class, this chart will be part of your attendance and participation grade (5% of your total grade). So make sure to keep a good record of this.

6. During conversations and class work, keep your student name or number on the table so the teacher can see it.

7. Late assignments will lose 10% of their grade each week they are late depending on the reason they are late.

8. Don’t throw your homework away, especially things the teacher has corrected. These are important to review before tests. Also, keep them just in case there are some questions about grades or some accidents happen.

9. If you win certain games and activities you can collect bonus points for quizzes and tests.

COPYING , ETHICS AND REFERENCING Sometimes students are tempted to copy their work from others. Teamwork is very good and useful in group projects and getting advice is also important. But, copying without referencing is very wrong and unethical. It is the same as lying. You are saying that this is your work and it isn’t your work. In the real world lying causes people to lose jobs, lose money, families and sometimes even lose their lives. Because cheating is so damaging in the real world, it will not be tolerated. If you do cheat, there will be major penalties. In most cases you will have to do the assignment 3-4 times instead of just once in order to get a grade. There may also be some points lost depending on the situation.1) EXAMPLE 1: Hwang Oo Suk is one example. He lost

his job, money and Korea was very embarrassed by his lies.

2) EXAMPLE 2: Ken Lay of Enron is another recent example. He lied to stockholders about the health of his company. He said it was doing very well. But, at the same time he was selling all of his stock in the company. The company went bankrupt and many, many people who had trusted him lost a lot of money. The government took him to court. They found him guilty of lying and sentenced him to prison for 30 years. He didn’t go though. Why? Because of such intense stress, he got a heart attack and died. His lies and the stress from his lies eventually killed him.

FACT: There are many similar examples. Every year businesses in America lose $310,000,000,000 because of dishonesty. It’s similar in Korea. This causes great stress, broken dreams and many problems for many people including the person who lied or stole. They are usually

caught and punished. I feel strongly about this because some partners in a school that I started broke their promises to me. This destroyed one school that I started and was very heart breaking. So, always be honest and ethical. Don’t even think about copying. It’s lying.

ORIGINAL: Florence was born into a rich family at the Villa Colombia in Florence, Italy, on May 12, 1820, but grew up in England. She and her sister loved the countryside and Nightingale sometimes took care of sick

countryside and Nightingale sometimes took care of sick dogs and animals in the area. In 1840, Nightingale begged her parents to let her study mathematics more but her mother did not approve of this idea. After many emotional arguments, her parents finally let her study math with several excellent math teachers. Later she tutored other students in math. Her math skills became very important in her nursing work and helped her to pioneer the “coxcomb” pie charts which people everywhere use now.

REWRITTEN: Florence Nightingale grew up in England. She was a country girl and had a passion for caring for sick animals. She also loved studying. Once, she begged her mother to let her study math. Finally, after many arguments, her parents agreed. Florence later taught other students in math and her math skills were critical in developing her pioneering pie charts.

It is also not ethical to follow the same story line or plot as another writer. You need to do make your own plot, focus and not just take it from someone else. What story do you want to tell? What is your goal in writing? Read a lot, rewrite some things in your own words and use ideas from many sources. But, make it YOUR story and according to YOUR focus.

You can quote and tell stories from other people. This is good and it shows that you are more intelligent and that you have studied your topic. But, if you do this, you must tell where you got the information: You will need to include at least the 1) page number, 2) author’s name, 3) the name of the article, magazine or the book it is in OR the website address where you found it and 4) (for books) the publisher

Here are a few examples of how to do it:

QUOTES FROM FAMOUS DEAD PEOPLE: If it’s just a sentence or two (especially from a famous dead person), then you can just put the sentence and the author’s name. EXAMPLE:

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” – Aristotle"The only ones among you who will be really happy are those who will have sought and found how to serve." - Albert Schweitzer

QUOTES FROM MAGAZINES “Americans consume 21 million barrels of oil every day to fuel our cars, heat our homes and power our farms, factories and cities.” Delbanco, Andreas, “The Future of Energy”, inTime July, 2006: 4.

QUOTES FROM BOOKS: “God had commanded the Hebrews to teach their children His requirements and to make them acquainted with all His dealings with their fathers. This was one of the special duties of every parent--one that was not to be delegated to another.

OUTINGS AND ENGLISH EVENTSI may be available to go out with student groups to eat or for sports, hiking, games, concerts, bowling, etc. I am quite busy these days, but I have enjoyed doing this. If I have time, I might be able to come. Let me know about special English events that you want to invite other students too. I can tell them.

CONCLUSIONBest wishes as we learn English together and feel free to ask me any questions.

Remember, nothing good happens without perseverance and consistent practice. There will be many rewards in your future for doing this! NEVER GIVE UP! YOU CAN LEARN TO SPEAK ENGLISH WELL!

HOW DO I LEARN ENGLISH WELL?Congratulations! You’re learning English! There are many interesting things to learn in English. But, there are some important ideas to learn English well. Below are some ideas that have helped other students learn English.1. GOOD HEALTH HELPS MEMORY

To learn effectively, you need to have good health. It’s really difficult to learn anything well when you have a splitting headache for example. Modern science is also showing that good health habits are especially important for good learning. 4 of the most important are:A) GET 6-8 HOURS OF SLEEP EVERY NIGHT. Good sleep helps you to remember things long term according to CNN. If you don’t get enough sleep, it’s difficult to keep it in long term memory.

B) REDUCE/AVOID ALCOHOL: Cultures in many countries tell us we must drink alcohol, but many world leaders have rejected this destructive culture and kept their minds and bodies clear. Alcohol kills brain cells every time we drink it. I don’t know about you, but I need every brain cell I have. These people thought so too and refuse(d) to drink alcohol. Lincoln, Admiral Perry, George Bush, John Coltrane (really famous jazz musician), Stephen Covey, Tom Cruise, Gandhi, Orrin Hatch (US Senator), Anthony Hopkins (actor), Abdul Kalam (president of India), David Letterman, Jennifer Lopez, Ewan McGregor, Gwyneth Paltrow, Vladimir Putin (Russia), George Bernard Shaw, Shakira, Henry David Thoreau, Ellen White (most translated American author and most translated woman author in the world) and many more.

C) EAT MANY FRESH FRUITS/VEGETABLES/AVOID MEAT: Fresh fruit and vegetables especially are helpful in increasing your energy. They also give you more endurance. There’s a chemical that causes some brain problems. It’s name is arachidonic acid. This chemical causes problems in making and storing acetylcholine in our brains. Acetylcholine is a very important neuro-transmitter involved with thinking and mental processing. If we don’t have enough acetylcholine, our brain can’t function as well. Where do we find arachidonic acid? It’s found only in meat and in animal products.

D) REDUCE/AVOID SUGAR46 5 year old boys were studied. The boys with low sugar in their diet had superior attention and more correct responses. The boys with low sugar diets had grade scores 10% higher than the boys with high sugar content in their diet. Sugar, especially combined with low sleep, also makes you sick easily.

2. MOTIVATION/GOALS: Why do you want to learn English? For a career, to teach, for a promotion, to travel, to watch movies, to get a foreign boyfriend/girlfriend…Know your reason. Good motivation and clear goals are important for succeeding at learning English. Make sure you set major and minor goals:

MAJOR GOAL: I want to learn conversational English.MINOR GOAL: I don’t know present perfect tense well. I will try to speak and write present perfect tense a lot this week.

3. GET NATURAL & COMPREHENSIBLE INPUTWe learn our first language by listening first a lot. It’s the same with our second language. We need to listen a lot and read a lot first. There are many things in natural English that never appear in books. So, to become natural at English, you need to have lots of exposure to natural English. But, the things you read and read must be comprehensible. If you don’t understand what you watch (CNN, sitcoms, etc.), your ability will not increase very much. Research says that you should understand 80-90% of what you read/listen to to get the maximum learning. Another good method is to record a short TV program. Then watch it once. Write down the words you hear or understand. Do it again and again until you understand most or all of it. You may not understand it at first, but don’t go on to something else until you understand most of it. Very importantly, after you’ve learned something, try to use it in other situations.

4. READ A LOT **Reading a lot is extremely helpful for your English. It helps you learn many new vocabulary words and phrases that you won’t find in books. If you choose good things to read, it will help you to learn many useful ideas for life. Bill Gates, Carnegie, Florence Nightingale, Ben Carson, Bush, George Washington Carver, Billy Graham and so many other highly successful people are voracious leaders. Reading helped develop character and often gave them creative ideas (in Bill Gates case, he read an article from a computer magazine that inspired his idea to start Microsoft). Make sure you are reading useful things. Comic books won’t help you at all (unless your goal is to be a cartoonist). Read things that will

Page 12: ADVANCED CONVERSATION LECTUREeslmission.truth-is-life.org/docs/esl/Kyungsung Syllabus fo…  · Web viewWeek 10 (5/7-11) Unit 8: Describing people looks /verb-like, dating hints

help you grow. Read about people that you want to become like.

I highly recommend reading these chapters about a statesman named Daniel. These chapters show how the choices in many areas like diet are very important for your future success.Read chapters 39-44 from the book "Prophets and Kings" in Korean: http://info.syu.ac.kr/egw/retrieve.php?Table=King&ID=62  in English: http://www.egwtext.whiteestate.org/pk/pk.html

This is a Christian book, but even if you are not a Christian, this book has many good lessons about how diet and discipline are very important foundations of excellence, wisdom and leadership. Daniel’s story will make you think very deeply about your future and how your choices now will determine your future.

5. PERSEVERANCE/CONSISTANT PRACTICE/ There are many important people. Michael Jordan, Park Se Ri, Boa, Edison, Lincoln, John Newton, etc. They have many different traits. But, they all have one quality: Perseverance. They didn’t give up even when things were difficult. The things that are difficult are your biggest chances to improve. Practice them until they are easy. Here’s how: 1) Use new structures often. Write down difficult new vocabulary, phrases, idioms and structures that you hear and don’t know well. Memorize and use them in your speaking and writing. 2) Talk to your teacher and classmates and friends and children in English. 3) Read something everyday in English. If you read ½-1 page everyday in English, you will not forget English.4) Listen and focus on understanding radio/TV programs in English5) write a diary in English, e-mail pen pals in English, talk to yourself in English about everything you see, etc.

When possible have a friend or native speaker correct you and memorize good sentences and use them. Robert Holly became fluent in Korean by memorizing 10 correct Korean sentences everyday. Many people have learned languages well by memorizing, translating and or speaking everyday. You become good at the things that you do consistently. So, use English a lot in a variety of ways and you will become proficient.

”There’s nothing in the world that can take the place of persistence. Talent won’t, genius won’t, education won’t. If you’re persistent and determined to keep going, you’ll get there.... You can never see the full development of yourself down the road. But there’s a certain distance you can see. I believe if you go as far as you can see and then get there, you’ll be able to see a little bit farther and so on.” -SMA Gene C. McKinneyREMEMBER: In English, a very helpful thing to do is to memorize 10 sentences a day.

6. ASK QUESTIONS: The best students usually ask many questions. If you have a question, ALWAYS ask. There are no stupid questions. This also makes English interesting!

7. DON’T WORRY, BE HAPPY!! Everyone makes mistakes, especially at the beginning. I was learning Korean and I wanted to tell my students, “I am your teacher (nah-neun SUN-SAENG-NIM im-ni-dah)” But instead I said, “I am your respectable fish (nah-neun SAENG-SUN-NIM im-ni-dah)”. Have fun learning and laugh and learn from your mistakes.

8. LEARN FROM MISTAKES-IMPROVE YOUR WEAK POINTS: Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Park Chan Ho, Park Se Ri and almost all athletes use an important technique for improving. They watch videos of their games and identify the strong points and the weak points or mistakes. Then they practice and work on making their weak points stronger. You can do the same thing in English. Take tests or ask your teacher to tell you your weak points. Then practice making sentences in those areas until you are confident. This will help you improve more quickly than anything else.

9. DO FUN/USEFUL THINGS IN ENGLISHWhat words are easiest to remember in a new language? Often the slang words and funny words. For example, in Korean I learned “koom-keh-rah” very quickly. This means “dream on”. I used it and it was always very funny and so I remembered it quickly. Try to find things that that are fun to do in English. If you like jokes, read and practice telling jokes in English. If you like singing, listen to English songs and memorize them. If you like art, read and study about art in English. If you are going on a business trip, learn some business language. If you’re a teacher, read ideas for creative teaching. Learn things that you will use often.

Page 13: ADVANCED CONVERSATION LECTUREeslmission.truth-is-life.org/docs/esl/Kyungsung Syllabus fo…  · Web viewWeek 10 (5/7-11) Unit 8: Describing people looks /verb-like, dating hints

10. THINK IN ENGLISHMost students begin speaking by translating in their heads from their home language to English. This is a necessary step at the beginning. But, the sooner you can try to think in English, the better and more fluent you will become. Practice thinking and talking about things that are going on around you, your plans, what you are studying/working on, etc. Try to think in English and that will be a big step to being fluent in the language.

11. ENVIRONMENTThere are a few students who go to America for a year but don’t get much better at English because they spend most of their time with people who don’t use English. There are some students who never leave their home and learn English very well (an example of this is Lee Bo Young from Ewha Women’s University). The key is environment. If you surround yourself with an English environment, then you are going to improve. It is easier to do this in America, but you can do it even in Korea by watching English TV, listening to English music/movies, competing in English speeches, joining English clubs and drama groups, joining English Bible studies/church, reading English books, finding English pen pals, and many other ways.

12. FIND YOUR STYLEMany students want to speak perfect English like CNN. But even native speakers don’t talk like CNN! Each native speaker speaks a little differently because language is a creative art. Some speak quickly, some slowly. Some are more emotional, some logical, some are very polite, some use a lot of slang. In addition, there are many accents: British, American, Australian, South African and others. Find your way of speaking English. There are mistakes to avoid, but there are many right styles of speaking English. Find your style!

13. GOOD STUDY HABITS & TECHNIQUES--USE GOOD MEMORY TECHNIQUES:A) USE ACRONYMS: Acronyms help us remember information: BRASS is an acronym for how to shoot a rifle--Breath, Relax, Aim, Sight, Squeeze. This technique is especially useful for tests.

B) USE ACROSTICS: An acrostic is a sentence you make. The first letter of each word helps you remember something. EVERY GOOD BOY DOES FINE is an acrostic to remember the order of the G-clef notes on sheet music-- E,G,B,D,F.

C) LOCI METHOD - Imagine putting items you want to remember in locations in a room. To remember presidents: Place a dollar bill (Washington) on the door. Walk into the room and see Jefferson reclining on a sofa and Nixon eating out of the refrigerator.

D) KEYWORD METHOD -Select the foreign words you need to remember, then identify an English word that sounds like the foreign one. Now imagine an image that involves the key word with the English meaning of the foreign word. Professor Bissell remembered "선물" in this way. "Sun" and "물" are gifts from God (also “koinonia”). In Spanish, the word "cabina" means phone booth. Invent an image of a cab trying to fit in a phone booth. When you see the word "cabina," you should be able to recall this image and thereby retrieve the meaning "phone booth." Making funny pictures helps you remember more.

E) STORY CHAINING - Create a story where each word or idea you have to remember will cue the next idea you need to recall. Napoleon, ear, door, Germany Story: Napoleon had his ear to the door to listen to the Germans in his beer cellar.
