“Thatincludedspeakers,vendorsandsponsors,”saidOziel.“Almosteveryprovincewasrepresented.”
Nowtheyareorganizinganothertwo-dayprogramforJune6-7,attheUniversityofGuelph,whichOzielsayswillbeheldcloseenoughtotheAquacultureAssociationofCanada’sannualconferenceinGuelph,sothatparticipantscanattendbothevents.
“Itwillbeour‘AdvancedAquaponicsWorkshop’,”Ozielsaid.“Itwillpresentaquaponicsfromanacademicperspectiveandwillfocusonhowtodesign,maintainandproduceplantsandfishonacommercialscalefromatrulyCanadianperspective.”Heishopingthatasmanyas100peoplewillparticipate,andispreparedtoofferadiscounttoencouragecash-strappedstudents.
OzielsaidattendanceinDecemberwasgreatlyenhancedbytwoguestspeakers:DrNickSavidov,oftheAlbertaAgricultureandRuralDevelopmentDepartment,anacknowledgedexpertinthefield;andCharlieShultz,whowastheretodescribetheUniversityoftheVirginIslandssystemcreatedbyDrJamesRakocy,consideredthefatherofaquaponics.Shultzworkedwithhimforover14years.
Ozielsaidthatheandhiswife,Tamar,currentlyruna6,000-square-footindoorhatcheryandjuvenilesfacility,sharingsomeofthespacewithothertenants,buttheyarelookingtomovetoalargerfacilitylaterthisyear.It’sprojectedtobecapableofturningoutsome100,000fingerlingsamonthtosupplythegrowingaquaponicsindustryinCanada.
Theysell4-6week-old,all-maletilapiafry(0.5-1inchlong–1.2-2.5cm)tocommercialaquaponicsfarms.Fingerlingsaretwomonthsoldormore,andmeasure1-2inches(2.5-5cm).
