Golf News

Pro’s CornerOctober? Really? I always forget how fast the golf season flies by. We still have a few events to wrap up the schedule and October golf is sensational, so don’t pack those sticks away just yet. I do want to take this moment to thank you ALL for a great year!! Many of our events continue with great participation or similar in attendance as in the past. Our season long events continue with the biggest participation and the Club Championship field was as big as ever. I continue to see our membership mature (this was our 7th year) as well as our golf course. Ball marks were significantly better this year and a special thanks goes out to our grounds crew, who despite a difficult year with the heat, continued to produce an outstanding golf course. I always think of our membership as one big family. Some days we all get along better than others and sometimes we can neglect a detail or two but each year improvement is the goal for everyone’s enjoyment. We continued to improve the pace of play for the third straight year and I didn’t even need to send one letter. As our lives seem to be busier and busier, pace is always an exercise in etiquette. A big thanks and round of applause to all for their consideration of the golfers that play behind you. It wouldn’t be right not to give a special thanks to all the committee members that put in the hard work behind the scenes. THANK YOU to the Golf Committee, the Ladies League Committee and all the sub committees that help guide our events. Let’s finish the year off with fun, good golf and long live paddle.

Kindest Regards,

Joe

Rule of the MonthI recently had a discussion with some members regarding provisional balls. I hope the explanation below provides some clarity and furthers everyone’s knowledge of the Rules of Golf.

Question and Answer Scenario

When Provisional Ball Becomes in Play

Q. Joe, believing his tee shot might be lost OUTSIDE A HAZARD or OUT OF BOUNDS, played a provisional ball. He searched for his original ball but did not find it. He went forward and played his provisional ball. Then he went further forward and found his original ball in bounds. The original ball must have bounced down the road and then come back into bounds, because it was found much farther from the tee than anticipated. Was the original ball still the ball in play?

A. No, Joe played a stroke with the provisional ball from a point nearer the hole than the place where the original ball was likely to be. When Joe did so, the provisional ball became the ball in play and the original ball was lost – Rule 27-2b.

For Clarity ~ A player may play a provisional ball up to the point where the original ball is thought to be lost or out of bounds. Once the provisional ball is played past where the original ball is thought to be, the provisional ball is in play regardless whether you find the original ball or not.

Taken from USGA Rule Decision 27-2b/4.

This is the time of year superintendents begin to reflect on the past season and assess. I think everyone would agree that the story from this summer was weather extremes. Hot and dry is what we found most of the year, and the dry part still continues to this day. According to droughtmonitor.com we are classified in the severe drought stage.

Temperature wise it has been warm. All months from March through August had the average monthly temperature higher than normal, with March being 15 degrees warmer than normal, and May and July at least 5 degrees warmer than normal. More importantly though, has been the lack of rainfall. Based on averages, we are at 11.65 inch deficit in rainfall from March 1 through August 31. If we compare rainfall to evapotranspiration (ET), the process of transferring moisture from the earth to the atmosphere by evaporation of water and transpiration from plants, or water loss, we are at an 18.81 inch deficit. What does all that mean? We are dry! We need Mother Nature to catch us up. In the immediate short term all is good, the golf course is green and healthy, and things appear well. But for the long term, we need all systems to be recharged. We need the water to fill up the soil below our feet as well as recharge the aquifers that supply much of our fresh water. In the end, there is a reason there are averages and I am confident we will make this up eventually.

On a different note, moving forward in October, this is a time for projects and building plant health. We aerified greens a month earlier than normal and by now, all holes should be healed. There are two major reasons this date was moved up; first, to provide soil temperatures for the most rapid recovery of holes, and second, to discourage the spread of Poa annua on the greens. Poa annua gains a competitive edge over the desirable bentgrass when we enter mid to late fall. Open holes and cooler temperatures is an invite for Poa seeds to germinate and thrive.

We are again using the Vertiquake in the fairways for aerification. This machine helps to shatter soil which, over time will improve air movement, water infiltration, and rooting. On the tees we are verticutting to remove some of the organic matter build up as well as topdressing to help dilute the same organic matter. This is not an overnight process to firm up the tees but requires a commitment to a sustained program over the long term. Mowing of the native/fescue areas will begin soon, as well as herbicide applications for the control of broadleaf weeds. If we have time to fit it in, we will also undertake some smaller drainage projects in the chronically wet areas.

As these projects progress, take a moment to look at the grounds department blog to be updated on the status. It can be found at hawthornwoodscc.blogspot.com. Additionally, you have the option of signing up to receive these blog posts via email. Look on the right sidebar of the blog and you will find a box that says subscribe by email. Enter your email address and you will then receive an email asking you to confirm that you actually want to receive these blog posts. Follow the directions in that email and you should then get all posts delivered directly to your inbox.

Thank you for a great golf season and we are looking forward to an exciting fall as well.

2012-2013 Singles & Doubles Club Championships

Finals TBD Sign up, for either event, is open to all members and will be open during the first half of the season. Starting in January we will post the draws of each event leaving two weeks to complete each round. Sign up for the Doubles Club Championship is individually. You will be placed on a team based on your position on your team roster or experience level. The finals will be held in early March depending on the league playoff schedule.

AQUATICSThe aquatics staff would like to thank everyone for a great season. We have been asked if we closed the pool earlier this year for any particular reason and the answer is yes. There were new state regulations put in place on equalizer lines. They need to be flush to the wall and that involved cementing them through the wall. The state asked us to complete the work during the summer. We asked for an extension so that we wouldn’t have to drain and close the pool for a week or two in the middle of the season. Once we contacted our pool company to complete the work we were given the extension until September. You will notice other pools in the area also doing work to the drains in the area. We thank you for your understanding and look forward to seeing all of you at the pool next May.
