It has been my honor and pleasure to serve as the President of the Adult Literacy League Board of Directors in 2011. It has been another year of strong programmatic growth amidst the on-going economic climate that impacts our students as well as our agency. Despite the difficulties, we

have continued to provide the highest quality of service to increasing numbers of adults and families. Our board has provided great leadership and support, and the number of community friends, partners and supporters continues to grow.

Near the end of the year, our staff and volunteers held the annual student recognition event – a wonderful multi-cultural potluck held at our office and attended by nearly 100 of our students. It is one of the most rewarding things we, as board members, get to do each year – have the opportunity to celebrate our students’ success. It was exciting to share with them the educational milestones that they have passed on their way to becoming better workers, citizens, and parents. For many of them, this is a second chance for success and it has taken great courage and commitment. For others, it may be the only chance they have ever been offered.

That is why the Adult Literacy League has been here since 1968, and why we continue to prosecute our mission: to develop readers to build a strong and literate community.

The Adult Literacy League’s Board and the Planning & Finance Committee that oversees fiduciary matters for the League, had key strategic objectives this year and we were successful in meeting them. We increased the number of donations and the overall funds raised, including some significant new grant awards from Heart of Florida United Way and Orange County Government – Citizen’s Review Panel. We were able to successfully manage cash throughout the year and increase our overall revenue, while keeping expenses under budget.

We have provided our 2011 Statement of Financial Positioning provided by our auditor. A complete copy of our audit and/or 990 IRS Tax return can be sent electronically upon request.

If it is true that a picture is worth a thousand words, I hope these pictures give you the best idea of the wonderful accomplishments of our program participants throughout 2011. Here are some of the 1,800 adult students who received

instruction and a few of the 550 children and parents who are reading more and learning more at home together thanks to the Adult Literacy League. More than 400 active volunteers made a difference in 2011, and we thank and congratulate them all.

Ron Schorsch, a dedicated volunteer with the Adult Literacy League, received the “2011 Community Quarterback Award” from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for his exceptional work as a tutor and interviewer. He logged nearly 1,000 volunteer tutoring hours in 2011 to help our students’ improve their reading and writing skills. Schorsch also volunteered 10 hours a week to interview and enroll prospective students into the program, showcasing a true desire

to help adults improve their literacy skills.

In December, students gathered to celebrate their successes during ALL’s annual Holiday Student Party. The event featured a potluck where students shared unique dishes from their

native countries. In 2011, we served students from 55 different countries including Afghanistan, Colombia, Haiti, Puerto Rico, Vietnam and Ukraine.

The Read to Me! Book Club served over 500 low-income preschool children and their parents in 2011, more than doubling the amount of families served in previous years. The program’s success is largely due to the loyal support from individual donors and organizational support from several funders including the Orlando

Magic Youth Foundation, Disney Helping Kids Shine Grants and the City of Orlando through the Mayor’s Matching Grant Program.

ALL’s summer events included the 5th Annual Max Starks Youth Football Camp at Lake Highland Preparatory School. The event, hosted by Pittsburgh Steelers

offensive tackle Max Starks, attracted more than 400 children from Parramore and featured several NFL football players. ALL Executive Director Joyce Whidden spoke

on the importance of family literacy to parents in attendance.

New York Times best-selling author Carl Hiaasen mesmerized a sold-out crowd with his wit and style at the 4th Annual Reading between the Wines presented by Bank of America. The event featured delicious

food, fine wine and an incredible silent auction and raised over $70,000 for literacy in Central Florida.

The Young Lawyers Section of the Orange County Bar Association hosted the 2nd Annual Lawyers for Literacy Spelling Bee at the DoubleTree by Hilton Orlando

Downtown in October. Sixteen teams took center stage in a fierce, yet fun competition that ended in a tie with Lowndes, Drosdick, Kantor and Reed and the Young Lawyers Section. The event raised over $30,000 for adult and family literacy programs at the

Adult Literacy League.
