Computer & ICTBasic IT Part 1: Getting to know your computerA very basic course that starts withswitching on a computer. The courseis intended to build confidence andincrease the learners’ interest in IT. Itis a stepping stone for most learnerson to further IT courses.Duration: Usually 10 hours.

Basic IT Part 2: Level A – Internet and emailA more in-depth look at the Internetand email, including Searches,Favourites, printing and theproperties of a website address plus creating and using an email address.Duration: Usually 10 hours.

Basic IT Part 3: Level B – Getting the most out of your computer including managing filesThis includes viruses & virusprotection, using common elementsof Windows through MS Word andother programmes, e.g. layeringWindows and multi-tasking, copy, cut and paste between layered Windows and programs, using toolbars, menus and file management.Duration: Usually 10 hours.

Basic IT Part 4: Level C – Computer Next StepIncluding MS Word Using MicrosoftWord to create documents, etc.printing and saving documents on to

hard disc and memory sticks.Duration: Usually 10 hours.

Digital Photography for Beginners and Next Level – Levels B & CUse digital cameras to take images,download these onto a PC and thenedit the images.Duration: Usually 20 hoursthis course can be broken into 2 x 10 hour courses.

IT for ParentsLearn to use the Internet and emailat your child’s school. Learn about internet safety for you and your child and safe settings for your computer.Access your school’s website, see what your child is learning and contact the school by email. Find out about how to access your child’s reports in the future. This course is usually held in schools.Duration: Usually 20 hours.

iPads and Tablet ComputersUse ours or bring your own device. This course teaches you all about tablet computers, the different types and how to get the best from them.

SkypeLearn to install and use Skype to contact people for free on your computer!

Internet safety“What goes on-line stays online” learn all about the does and don’ts

of using the internet and social networking and how to keep safe while using it.

BCSA basic computer qualification through the British Computer Society. This covers on-line basics and basic computer skills including internet and email use.Duration: Approximately 10-15 hours.

ITQ Level 1 and 2 – IT User SkillsThe ITQ is offered as an award,certificate or diploma at Levels 1 and 2. The aim of the qualification is to enable learners to gain knowledge,understanding and skills specific totheir individual needs in either aneducational or work environment.It is designed to assist learners ingaining employment.Duration: Dependent on level and modules undertaken.

The length of the courses are flexible: Two-hour workshops, short courses of up to six weeks, or longer courses of one or more terms. Courses can be tailor-made and planned with your setting.

Family Learning – What Do We Do?Courses are run in partnership with schools and children’s centres. Adults work with their own child, finding out what they learn and how to support their development. They also develop their own skills in English and Maths.Children join their mothers/fathers in the second part of sessions to work together on practical activities.

Family EnglishAdult only or Joint with ChildrenAdults can brush up their own literacy skills and learn how to support their children’s literacy development. The course covers aspects of the primary curriculum and methods used to teach English in schools. Parents can worktowards a nationally-recognised qualification in Functional English at their own level.Duration: 30 hours (accredited).

Family MathsAdult only or Joint with ChildrenAdults can brush up their own maths skills and learn how to support their children’s numeracy development. The course covers aspects of the primary curriculum and methods used to teach numeracy in schools. Parents can work towards a nationally-recognised qualification in Functional Maths at their own level. Duration: 30 hours (accredited).Fa

A course to support mothers/fathers to help their child with reading. It covers phonics, rhyme and language development in Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 and incorporates the Bookstart packs.Duration: 10 hours.

Fun with Numbers

Adults and Children

Mothers/fathers brush up their own maths skills and learn about the development of numeracy in Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1.Duration: 10 hours.

Learning Together

Adults and Children

An accredited course to support mothers/fathers with children in the Early Years Foundation Stage.The course is based on the EYFS curriculum and explores areas of learning and development.Duration: 30 hours (accredited).

Ready for School

Adults and Children

This course introduces parents and children to the school setting. Parents can find out how and what children learn in reception class and share ideas about how to prepare them for starting school.Duration: 10 hours or 30 hours (accredited).

Family Science

Adults and Children

Based on the school curriculum for each Key Stage mothers/fathers and children explore, investigate and enjoy learning together.Duration: 10 hours.

KS2 WritingAdults and Children, all agesMothers/fathers support their children to plan, create and improve a story using technology.Families will produce an audio, animation or mini-move to take away. Duration: 10 hours.

Money TalksAdults only This accredited course explores family finance. Topics include budgeting skills, attitudes to money, passing on good habits to children, saving and debt management.Duration: 10 hours or 30 hour courses (accredited).

These courses offer essential skills and personal development for a variety of learners. They are available as individual units or as a combination to build self-confidence, self-esteem, communication and skills to function in everyday life, including basic and employability skills. These are suitable for target groups at different levels, such as learners with learning difficulties and disabilities, learners with mental health issues and people who wish to improve their skills.

Lifting BarriersDifficulty in spelling or think you are dyslexic? This is a computer-based course which will improve spelling, reading, short term memory and key board skills.

14Physical Care of Babies and Young ChildrenA course for new mums to help with the difficult world of being a parentIdentify and caring for babies and toddlers, how to treat them with sensitivity in the care routine, the enjoyment and bonding between yourselves. Look at nutritional needsand allergies that may occur.Duration: 12 weeks of two hours.

Cook and EatA course starting with everyday meals made healthy and nutritious for all the family. Prepare meals and build up culinary skills.Duration: Five sessions of two hours.

Building on VolunteeringA course designed to build on your volunteering experiences. Identifying their personal development as a result of volunteering and using this to identify the next steps for you.Duration: Five sessions of two hours.

Developing presentational skillsUnderstand the differences for different kinds of presentations to a variety of audiences. Outline the skills required, preparation and delivery and the use of visual aids for an effective presentation. Duration: Seven sessions of two hours.

Activities Co-ordinator This course will benefit care companies in a number of ways. It will give staff an Ascentis Level 2 qualification and ideas for future projects working with residents/clients from care settings for the elderly and learning disabled. The course will train staff to run cheap and easy activities that can make a difference to the quality of life for their residents. It includes hands-on experience running a workshop

session for a group of residents/ servce users.

The following courses are mostly delivered to learners with learning disabilities.

Healthy Living and Budgeting Preparing a learner to understandwhy a healthy lifestyle is importantand how activities will improve theirown lifestyles. This also includes themanaging of personal budgets.

Keeping Healthy and Safe – Entry 1 and 2Learning how to take care of yourself including healthy food and lifestyle, keeping your clothes and body clean, taking part in exercise, safety in the home and environmentincluding being aware of strangers.

Managing Own Money – Entry 2This course looks at recognisingincome and expenditure, preparing asimple budget, demonstrate payingfor an item and making simplecalculations.

Managing Social RelationshipsDemonstrate how to interact withothers by the use of a variety of communication techniquesdetermined by the social situation.

Safety In and Outside the HomeIdentifying risks and hazards both inand outside the home, preventionand safe practices.Duration: 10 hours.

Dealing with Problems in Daily LifeA course designed to aid the learnerrecognise problems, tackle them and use methods to cope with incidents such as personal loss and change.Available for different learners and at a variety of levels.

Individual Rights and ResponsibilitiesA course designed to enable people to:• Understand their rights as an

individual• Identify support that is available• Understand individual

responsibilities and how to take responsibility for themselves.

The course can be delivered at a variety of different levels for a variety of community groups, please phone for details.

Sexual and Personal Health – Entry 1 and 2A module designed to educate aboutsexual and personal health. Learnhow to keep healthy and when toseek help.

Drugs and Alcohol AwarenessThis course looks at identifying avariety of substances classed asdrugs including alcohol, cigarettes,and medicines as well as illegalsubstances. Looking at the effects oftheir use and why people use themand recognises the potential risks inusing drugs and alcohol.

Time and Money – Entry 1 and 2Learn how to plan time effectively,the value of money, how to pay forgoods and to manage a budget.

Understanding sexual relationships – Entry 1 and 2Know what conception is. Look atcontraception, sexual intercourse,saying NO to sex and understandingyour sexual choices.

Yourself and Others – Entry 1 and 2Being able to communicate aboutyourself with others. Includingidentifying own likes, dislikes, personal skills, hobbies, opinionsand feelings. Understand how tointeract with familiar people sociallywith appropriate actions.

We are all aware that older adultsliving in care need both exercise andmental stimulation to help maintaintheir independence and also improvetheir health and well-being.Learning in Later Life is a project run by Adult and Community Learning, Blackpool Council. Our aim is to improve the lives of residents, clients and staff by offering courses that will be mutually beneficial to everyone.We currently run free workshopsfor elderly learners at local venues.These are held on a fortnightly basiscovering topics that involve a rangeof skills.Our sessions maintain and developdexterity, communication, memory,attention, problem-solving and socialskills. These courses can also beheld in the care home and designedspecifically around your residents’needs.

The Activities Co-ordinator coursewill benefit care companies in anumber of ways. It will give staff anAscentis Level 2 qualification, andideas for future projects working withyour residents/clients. Art & Craft classesDrawing and Painting for Beginners/ I’ve Always Wanted to Draw and PaintA very basic course that starts withdrawing skills, including perspective;light and tone; reflection and shadow; nd progresses to the colour wheel and painting in watercolours. The course is intended to build confidence and increase the learner’s interest in Art and is a stepping stone for learners on to further Art courses.Duration: Usually two hours per week.

Drawing and Painting for ImproversExplore the basics required for theeffective mixing of secondary andtertiary colours, with the majorityof subjects being in natural history.There will be tips and techniquesthroughout that will help with allaspects of drawing and painting.Duration: Usually two hours per week.

Watercolours for BeginnersA very basic course that explores thebasics required for learning to usewatercolour paints, brushes and paper, mixing and making different tonesto make a permanent colour mixingchart, whilst also looking at landscapepainting. The course is intended tobuild confidence and increase thelearner’s interest in watercolours.Duration: Usually two hours per week.

Painting Landscapes in WatercolourThis course will encourage the use of different techniques to extend your perception of landscape art and improve your landscape painting whilstdeveloping your appreciation of art andspecific subjects within landscape.Duration: Usually 36 hours over twoterms.

The Craft of Card MakingThe course will cover a variety ofeasy to learn art and craft techniqueswhich are used to create hand-madegreetings cards.Duration: Usually two hours per week.

The courses listed below are examples of non-accredited courses which are aimed at enabling adults to enjoy learning their chosen subject in a non-threatening environment, whilst also improving their self-confidence and communication skills. The courses are open to all adults over the age of 19, and are held in a variety of venues including College Campuses and community venues.

Baby MassageMassage is an excellent way ofconnecting with your baby. To offeryour baby the benefits of a full bodymassage is an excellent tool for anyparent and can also offer relief withthe many childhood ailments includ-ingcolic, teething, colds and snufflesand sleep problems. Massage gives the opportunity for a parent to totally focus on their baby and is also a perfect time to introduce songs and rhymes. While receiving a massage a baby is being offered love, respect and nurturing touch which is all uilding the founda-tions for a secure, happy emotionally sound child.

Baby YogaHave fun exercising with your babyand get back into shape at the sametime. Baby yoga, which complementsinfant massage, offers a series ofexercises that can be enjoyed bymother and baby together. Baby Yoga offers the experience of movement and touch, with flowing postures and holds which provide rich stimulation for your baby and induce deep relaxation in adults.

Yoga and RelaxationOver the duration of the course,learners will have the opportunity todevelop more flexibility and strengthin the body, improve posture, anddevelop more peace of mind toenable a greater ability to relax. Theclasses are suitable for all levels.Duration: Usually 1.5 hours per week.

ICT Basic Computer classesAimed at helping you get the mostout of your home computer. Thesecover using the Internet, Email andWord Processing. Starts with switchingon a computer. There may be the opportunity to progress to further Word Processing, Spreadsheets, Powerpoint or Publisher courses.Duration: Usually 1.5 hours per week.

Digital PhotographyCourses are available for both begin-ners and the more experiences and aim to improve your photographic skills using a digital camera. Beginners will be given instruction in basic picture taking and how to use a digital camera effectively. Non-beginners will have the opportunity to experiment with various techniques including to using lighting to best effect.Duration: Usually two hours per week.

Release Your Potential and Change Your LifeThis programme looks at empoweringthe individual to take control of their life by enabling them to reflect, recognise and re-build the structures within their lives that tend to be governed by negativity, fear and failure. It looks at arming the individual with coping strategies to deal with situations that previously would have left them struggling. The programme aim is to enable the individual to use the identified strategies to promote more balance and harmony into their lives, both within themselves and in their relationships with others.
