    TheADSSR1isamultifunctionsimplexrepeater,voicemailbox,andvoice

    announcementsystem. Itcanbeusedwithalmostanyradio(handheld,base

    station,or

    What is a Simplex Repeater?

    Mostradiooperatorsarefamiliarwiththeconceptofaduplexrepeater,wherea

    separatereceiverandtransmitteroperateatthesametime,listeningonone

    frequencyand

    retransmitting

    on

    another.

    Duplex

    repeaters

    allow

    natural

    conversation,buttheyretypicallybulkyandexpensivebecauseoftheelaborate

    filtersrequired.

    Asimplexrepeater,ontheotherhand,isastoreandforwarddevice. Itrecords

    incomingtransmissionsandresendsthemonthesamechannel. Itcanprovide

    thesameextensionofcoverageandrangeasaduplexrepeater,withtheobvious

    drawbackofrequiringtwiceasmuchairtimetocarryoutaconversation,aseach

    transmissionisrepeatedback. However,theirsimplicityandlowcostmakes

    themperfectfortemporaryoremergencyuse,andtoprovidecoverageinareas

    wherethecostofaduplexrepeatercantbejustified.

    Formany

    radio

    clubs

    and

    emergency

    response

    organizations,

    asingle

    semi

    portableduplexrepeaterisamajorinvestment. SimplexrepeatersliketheADS

    SR1,ontheotherhand,areinexpensiveenoughtobekeptasindividual

    equipmentforeachmember,makingitmorelikelythattheyllbeavailablefor

    rapiddeploymentwhenneeded. Anemergencyrepeaterstationcanbesetup

    withnothingmorethanahandheldradio,acable,andtherepeaterunititself.

    TheADSSR1hasadditionalfeaturesthatmakeitusefulasmorethanjusta

    simplexrepeater. Forexample,thesayagainfeaturecanbeusedtorepeata

    single

    missed

    message

    on

    demand,

    even

    with

    the

    normal

    repeater

    function

    disabled. Thisisparticularlyusefulinsituationswheremoststationsareclose

    enoughtoheareachotherdirectlyandnormaloperationoftherepeaterwould

    bedistracting.

    ThevoiceannouncementfeaturesoftheADSSR1canbeusedindependentlyof

    therepeaterfunctions,andcanbeusedforsuchthingsasclubactivityreminders

    orfoxhuntbeacons,orevenaslowscanTVbeacon. Thevoicemailfeature

    functionslikeanansweringmachineforyourradio,recordingupto20incoming

    messagesandallowingthemtoberetrievedwithaseparateaccesscode,

    independentof

    the

    main

    security

    code.

    Legal Issues

    Legalrestrictionsontheoperationofasimplexrepeaterdependontheradio

    serviceused(i.e.,amateur,commercial,FRS,MURS,etc)andvaryfromcountry

    tocountry. Interpretationsofspecificrulesvaryaswell,andtheirapplicability

    tooperationoftheADSSR1maydependonwhichspecificfeaturesareused. It

    istheresponsibilityoftheendusertoensurethattheyoperatewithinapplicable

    regulations.

    Hardware Description

    TheADSSR1measures3.6by2.6by1.1(92mmby66mmby28mm). Its

    frontpanelhasapushbuttonpowerswitch,2.1x5.5mmcenterpositiveDCpower

    jack,andanRJ45jackforallradioconnections. TwoLEDs(oneredandone

    green)on

    the

    RJ45

    jack

    indicate

    activity.

    A

    removable

    panel

    on

    the

    back

    of

    the

    unitprovidesaccesstothebatterycompartmentandDIPswitches. Settingthe

    DIPswitchesmayrequireasmallobjectlikeapapercliporpin. Theseswitches

    selectthePTTmodeandaudiooutputrange,andallowthedevicetoberesetto

    itsdefaultsettings.

    Powerissuppliedbyinternalbatteries,throughtheDCpowerjack,orthrough

    theRJ45jack.

    Installing Batteries

    TheADSSR1acceptstwoAA(LR6)sizebatteries. Usefreshalkalineorlithium

    batteries,andpaycloseattentiontobatterypolarity. Donotinstallbatteriesif

    theunitisbeingpoweredthroughtheRJ45jack!

    Donotstoretheunitforlongperiodswithalkalinebatteriesinstalled. Iflong

    termstorageisrequired,usepremiumgradelithiumbatteries(e.g.,Energizer

    Lithium)andinspectthemperiodically. Lithiumbatteriesprovidesignificantly

    longeroperatinglifefortheunitandcanbestoredforlongerperiodsoftime.

    Becausethe

    ADS

    SR1

    may

    be

    stored

    in

    your

    emergency

    kit

    for

    years

    without

    beingused,lithiumbatteriesarehighlyrecommendedtoensurethattheunitwill

    workwhenitsneeded.

    volumeoftheradioconnectedtotheADSSR1sothatthegreenLEDflickersin

    responsetoyourvoice,withouttheredLEDdimmingnoticeably.

    Settingthetransmitaudiolevelisatwostepprocess. First,therangecanbeset

    roughlyusingDIPswitches1and2. Theaudiolevelwillbelowestwithboth

    switchesoff,

    and

    highest

    with

    both

    switches

    on.

    Whensetproperly,thetransmittedaudioshouldsoundnaturalandnotdistorted

    orclipped,withoutbeingexcessivelyquiet. The##98commandwillcausethe

    unittotransmita1kHztoneatfullamplitudeforseveralseconds,tohelpwith

    adjustment. IfyoucantfindacombinationofDIPswitchsettingsthatyieldsa

    comfortableaudiolevel,itcanbefurtheradjustedusingaDTMFcommand,

    detailedbelow.

    Operation

    Whenrepeatermodeisenabled(asitisbydefault),theADSSR1listensfor

    activityandautomaticallystartsrecordingwhenaudioisdetected. Ifthered

    lightdoesnotcomeoninresponsetoradioactivity,checkthatthevolumelevel

    ofthe

    radio

    is

    set

    correctly.

    Aperiodofsilence(initiallysettotwoseconds)tellstheADSSR1thatthe

    transmissionisfinished,anditthenkeystheradioandretransmitsthemessage.

    Manymobileradiosprovideasquelch,COR/COS,orbusysignalthatcanbe

    usedwiththeADSSR1ssquelchinput. ThisallowstheVOXdelaytobe

    eliminated. Seethesectiononthesquelchinputfunctionformoreinformation.

    If

    no

    time

    limit

    has

    been

    set,

    the

    repeater

    will

    record

    until

    its

    memory

    is

    full.

    Rememberthatthe218secondmemoryissharedbetweenthecurrentmessage

    beingrecorded,theprevioustransmission(ifsayagainmodeisenabled)and

    anystoredvoicemailmessagesandannouncements. Iftheunitrunsoutofspace,

    itwillwaituntilthecurrenttransmissionendsbeforerepeatingasmuchasitwas

    abletorecord.

    Ifatimelimitisset,therepeaterwillrecordonlytothislimitandwillthen

    immediatelytransmitwhatitrecorded,evenifthesenderisstilltalking. Ifthe

    cooldowntimerisenabled,theunitwillstoprepeatinguntilthetimerexpires.

    Thishelps

    prevent

    transmitter

    overheating,

    and

    allows

    arepeater

    with

    astuck

    squelchtobecontrolled,asitwillstillrespondtocommandsevenwhilethecool

    downtimerisactive.

    TheADSSR1respondstoanumberofDTMFcommands.Normalcommands

    startwith##;accesstothesecommandscanberestrictedthroughtheuseofa3

    digitsecuritycode.

    Afewcommandscanbeusedwithoutasecuritycode. Pressing0activatesthe

    say

    again

    function

    (if

    enabled)

    and

    causes

    the

    repeater

    to

    retransmit

    the

    last

    transmissionheard,evenifhoursordayshavepassed.However,thesayagain

    memoryisnotretainedwhentheunitispoweredoff.

    Therecordvoicemailcommand,1,canalsobeenteredwithoutasecuritycode.

    recommendcuttingoutthissheet,foldingit,andstoringitintheADSSR1s

    batterycompartment. Ifyouplantostoretheunitforlongperiodswithlithium

    TheADSSR1svoicemailfunctionsaredisabledbydefault. Usethe##73

    commandtoturnonvoicemailandallowuserstorecordmessages.

    Squelch Input

    Thesquelchinputcanbeenabledinactivehighoractivelowmode. Theinput

    thresholdisapproximatelytwovolts. Ifanopencollectorinputisused,an

    externalpullupresistorisrequired. Theinputvoltageshouldnotexceed30

    volts.

    Iftheunitisconnectedtoanunsquelchedaudiosource,unplugthecablebriefly

    aftersendingthesquelchmodecommand. Thiswillgivetherepeaterachanceto

    processthereceivedcommandandsettheappropriatemode.

    Ifyouinadvertentlysetthewrongsquelchmodeandleavetheunitinastate

    whereitcantreceivecommands,youcanrestorethedefaultsettingsusingthe

    proceduredescribedintheResettingtoDefaultssection.

    Oncethesquelchmodehasbeenproperlyset,itissafetosettheVOXtimeoutto

    zero,allowingretransmissionwithoutapause. Ifunsquelchedaudioisusedand

    thesquelchsignalistooslow,repeatedtransmissionsmayincludeaburstof

    staticattheend. Youcanusethesquelchtailsuppressionoptiontopreventthis.
