When the white of the eye (sclera) takes on a deep red, almost purple hue and becomes painful, it may be due to an infl ammatory condition known as
“scleritis.” Unlike milder “episcleritis,” which involves non-infected irritation and infl ammation of the thin layer of tissue covering the sclera (the episclera), scleritis poses the risk of severe complications, and immediate diagnosis and treatment are highly recommended. In about half of the cases of scleritis, primary infl am-mation of the sclera is associated with autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus. Once a distinction is made between scleritis and less threatening episcleritis, the condition may be effectively treated with topical steroids. The underlying cause should also be addressed.
P.S. The pain associated with scleritis often radiates to the cheeks, forehead, and be-hind the eye. There may also be tearing, sensitivity to light, and reduced or poor vision.
