Is Scotland Green Jobs Ready?Preparing for the green economy

Architecture and Design Scotland (A+DS) is Scotland’s champion for excellence in placemaking, architecture and planning.

A+DS is an Executive NDPB of the Scottish Government that aims to support the creation of well-designed environments that are ultimately, places where people want to be. We champion the highest standards in architecture and placemaking across all sectors, advocating a better understanding of the importance of quality design in both the public and private sectors.

A+DS works through a number of established programmes to champion excellence and advocate the benefits of best practice in design. Our programmes are Urbanism, Design forum, Sust., Access to Architecture, Schools Design and Healthcare Design.

Sust is a programme within A+DS that is dedicated to sustainable design in architecture and the built environment. Sust aims to raise public awareness of sustainable design and the contribution it can make in delivering a sustainable future, and improve an understanding of sustainable design for those commissioning new buildings.

Based at A+DS’s Glasgow offices at The Lighthouse in Glasgow, we have recently expanded our physical resources through the opening of a sustainable Materials Library to promote ongoing activities in the construction sector and to complement our existing online Green and Funding Directories. This event is one of a series aimed at bringing together those who need information, support and resources, with those who can help them to deliver.

Is Scotland Green Jobs Ready? Good places need to be underpinned by an economy that gives people the opportunities to make the most of their lives.

With this in mind, and while financial stability is only one contributor to socio-economic sustainability, communities supported by people in meaningful employment have greater opportunities to thrive. In a wider context the drive for a more sustainable, confident Scotland will increasingly create opportunities to take advantage of the huge potential that exists in the areas of innovation and the green jobs agenda.

This event will examine key issues surrounding the development of jobs and skills for a greener economy. Content will range from renewable technologies to the use of indigenous materials in the construction sector. We will also examine the need to develop and transform skills as we move from traditional to modern methods of construction, new finance models and how the Green Deal might support new low carbon jobs.

Finally we will touch on the overarching issue of funding for training, job creation and innovation.

SESSION ONE‘Green Jobs’ and the potential barriers to success

In this first session we will hear from The Scottish Government on its ambitions for the Scottish Green Jobs market and the support which the government has given to, and will continue to offer the sector. In addition, we will explore what is meant by the term ‘Green Jobs’ and how Scotland can capitalise on this opportunity.

SESSION TWOBuilding the Right Infrastructure

Session two explores how moving to a greener economy will change the way we live, the buildings we live and work in and how those buildings are powered. These changes will raise issues with our existing infrastructure – in this session we will explore how to best tackle these issues and how those changes can be funded to ensure that we are Green Jobs ready.

SESSION THREEGenerating Green Jobs and Skills

This final session will look at where the opportunities lie – how will Green Jobs will be created and by whom? The session will explore how we can ensure that we have a suitably trained (and retrained) workforce and the economic impact of this.
