Sleeping Beauty / Dir. J.Leigh, 2011

First movie made for J.Leigh so far. Considering this fact, it’s not so bad. Boredom is the very topic of the movie but like many movies about boredom, it’s rarely a success. The directing is clumsily filled with flat symbolisms, dialogues are a bit coarse and obvious, no passion or love or joy. Sometimes disgust - but as the director tries too much to shock, it fails. She stays stuck on aesthetics and mind pleasures. You might have not avoided to see the lead part Emily Browning in the awful “Sucker Punch”, but she is quite good in this one actually !

In “Pépito bleu” (let’s translate that “blue jaffa cake” so you would have the idea), Sébastien Tellier cynically explores the “spirituality” theme. We have a very pleasant, well directed and clever music video, set design, cg, grading, style, casting are flawless and not overdoing it. Directing has been took over by the company “Irene” and two of it’s numerous great and edgy directors : It’s witty and will frustrate you with this too short half-short half-music video. Ok yes .. It’s brilliant and new .. so Tellier can be presumptuous about it - but precisely because we clearly see he his, it makes it less good somehow ... Tellier is really half of a genius. According to me he would have the other half other artists (like Björk or Massive Attack) have if he would quit trying and prove he is awesome with this cliché “weird and edgy french bobo always wearing sunglasses” thing. Still his music and this music video are largely loved and quite awesome for the genre.

“The beauty inside” / Dir. Drake Doremus, 2012

Drake Doremus is an upcoming american director, though we wouldn’t know nothing famous he made. Nonetheless his work on “The beauty inside” is remarkable. Call that mini-serie, call that a “six episodes short movies”, it doesn’t matter : it’s 40min (in total) well spent. The project follows a mid-twenties L.A. man who wakes up looking like someone else everyday. The casting called for anyone online to submit auditions. Many made the cut as the film compiles videos from all over the world, mixed in with Doremus’ professionally shot footage. The whole thing is humble and pleasant, you might recognize Topher Grace’s voice (voiceover), and appearances from Mary Elizabeth Winstead, plus “Criminal Minds” star Matthew Gray Gubler. The result is like any great idea : clever, beautiful and simple.
