In October, as part of “Manufacturing Week,” we had quite a few (almost 100!) students and teachers come through Anderson Development Company (ADC) on tours. I appreciate everyone’s help and everyone’s hospitality as we welcomed the community into our workplace. Visits like this are important for us to get more involved with our community. The students who visited may become our future coworkers! It was an interesting experience to talk with the students and teachers about their perceptions of chemistry and to see their reactions to learning about what we do and how we do it. Since we practice chemistry every day, in the lab or plant, it’s easy to forget that we are making cutting edge products that so many people use. At the start of the discussion, very few people had heard of ADC but by the end, they could see that they used products that we make better; roller blade wheels, aluminum wheels, computer chips and Crazy Aaron’s Thinking Putty. They also didn’t believe that 96% of manufactured goods depend on chemistry until they couldn’t come up with anything that didn’t depend on chemistry. We don’t always see ourselves as a “high tech” business but we are! The students also showed a lot of interest in how people have developed the skills that they needed to grow and develop into new roles within ADC. Just within the past two months, we congratulated Tricia Harju with assuming the role of Director of HR as Ron Michalak retired, Heather Hawley with assuming the role of CFO as Barry Swartz retired and Aaron Miller with fully taking over the Urethane Business Director role as Howard Cox retired. And not long before that, Chuck Harsh retired and passed the reigns over to Roy Grisham. We will miss all of these guys as they helped to grow us to where we are today, but they are still close by and I’m pretty sure they will stay engaged with ADC and you will still see them! It’s been fun seeing people grow into their roles and we can only expect great things from them in the future! I think it is also a good validation that while we haven’t gotten to our goals yet, we are headed in a good direction. The students were also pretty surprised and happy to hear that they might not even need to get a college degree to continue their personal and professional growth when they heard about how operators and mechanics are working their way into leadership roles. They were happy to hear that there is often more than one path to get where you want to go if you work hard and are dedicated. Unfortunately, I don’t think that is always the message that they receive. It was clear also, that the students appreciated that we are so focused on creating a work environment to keep our employees and the community safe. Working safely takes everyone’s effort every day. Thank you for all that you are doing to watch out for yourself and for your coworkers! While I sometimes hear, “Boy, I’m worried about the next generation.” I was pretty encouraged! It’s fun to see the students’ enthusiasm and I’m looking forward to more chances to show off all of the great work that you are doing! Nicole CollettBy Elizabeth June

Everyone please welcome Nicole Collett to ADC. Some of you might remember seeing her face around awhile back around 2007 and you are not mistaken. Nicole used to work for August Mack Environmental, where after only 1-½ years of employment she was given the

opportunity to come and act as an environmental consultant for ADC. During this ten month period, she actually moved and lived in Adrian near Siena Heights University. This opportunity allowed Nicole’s interest in learning processes more in depth to flourish and is one of the things she loves about being back here at ADC. She also says, she loves being surrounded by such wonderful and talented people. Nicole previously lived in Eastern Pennsylvania. She has also lived near Livonia and grew up in Redford, near Detroit. Nicole attended MSU for a double major in environmental studies and zoology. In her spare time, she enjoys kayaking, camping, learning how to golf and supporting MSU sports teams, of course. If you haven’t already met Nicole, say hello, she’s very friendly!

David KitzmillerBy David Kitzmiller

Please welcome David Kitzmiller to the ADC Family!Prior to ADC, I have spent 25 years in various positions as a Chemical Engineer in Refining and Chemical Processing facilities. I have held

positions in Design Engineering, Manufacturing Process Engineer-ing, Construction, and Team Leader Roles in both Production and Reliability Engineering. The companies I worked for include Conoco (Crude Oil Refining), Total Petroleum Refinery, Hemlock Semiconductor, Dow Corning, and Dow Chemical. I have a wife and 3 children. Married to Shirley for 25 years who is currently employed at Alma College Music Department. Son, Scott is 21 and a Junior at Michigan Technological University studying Chemical Engineering with graduation expected, May 2018. Scott is also a Trumpet player in the MTU Symphony Band. Currently working a co-op with Kimberly Clark. Daughter, Mikaela is 18 and a Freshman at Alma College studying pre-med and dancing on the Alma College Dance Team. Daughter, Megan is 15 and a Sophomore at Alma High School. Sports include Soccer and Swimming. My interests include boating, fishing, hunting, billiards, build-ing/renovations, and occasionally hack at a golf ball. What I enjoy about ADC are the people and their understanding of how their job fits into the overall success of ADC. There is never a shortage of work but people take the time to keep their safety and those around them in mind when performing tasks. As the leader of the Maintenance Department, I can influence the effectiveness of our group by improving the Reliability of our equipment, our work practices, and skills to effectively influence the bottom line for the company. Having that direct line of site makes this a challenging and enjoyable job.

ADC Welcomes New Employees

Jack HaleBy Jamie Williams

Mr. Jack Hale has joined our ADC family as MRO Procurement/Inventory Coordinator. He currently lives in Tecumseh, MI. Jack and his family lived in California when he worked as a life insurance agent. Another position that he held had a great impact on individual’s lives;

he was head of the Cad Tech II Group at Hanger Orthotics and Prosthetics where they made artificial limbs. And to all the NASCAR fans, Jack was the maintenance manager for Americrown. Which, I am sure you all have seen the souvenir trailers. He was responsible for making sure everything was working properly.Jack was born in Tampa, FL and grew up in Tecumseh, MI. Some of the hobbies he enjoys are wood carving and drawing. He also made the comment that he has started deer hunting, but with the grin on his face, he has had no luck in bagging a deer. Jack is married to a loving wife, Leigh-Ann, and has two kids. His daughter Alexa is 5 years old, and his son Jackson is 1 year old. So, if you get a chance stop by and welcome Jack. Oh... Jack is very quiet until you get him talking.

Congratulations on Retirement!Anderson Development Company would like to thank the following employees for their dedication and service

over the years and wish them all a happy retirement.

Ever picked up a product, excited to get it home, only to find out that when you open the box and put it to its intended task for the first time it just falls apart? Or called in to get technical support and you pretty much just get a set of read out responses rather than the assistance of people who are actually knowledgeable in their subject? These terrible experiences just enhance the absolute necessity of quality in every aspect of business.History of World Quality DayQuality Day was established in 2008 at the Imarsat Conference Centre to create a place and time to discuss techniques of innovation, inspiration, and creative ideas. With Quality serving as a fundamental part of the GDP of first world economies, striving to improve customer satisfaction while finding ways to reduce the cost involved with increasing quality have been an essential part of business strategy. The time of being able to foist off a substandard product to customers has passed, and with the increased communication among customers has come the return of a demand for high quality lasting products. Quality is primarily increased through collaboration, innovation, and working to improve the output quality at every level of business and manufacturing. How to Celebrate World Quality DayCelebrating World Quality Day is best done by working together to create a plan for improving quality in your business. Whether it’s working on improving the efficiency of your system to create more time to focus on the growth of quality within your business.QUALITY - the standard of something as measured against other things of a similar kind; the degree of excellence of something.

Mud Hens Game 2016By Elizabeth June

July 16, 2016 turned out to be a beautiful day to watch Mud Hens vs. Columbus at the Fifth Third Field. Prior to the game, ADC families were invited to a nearby building where they could enjoy a dinner, a great view of the baseball eld, and the company of their co-workers. Families then made their way to the stands where they not only watched the game, but got to see Relish, Mustard, and Ketchup race around the eld. If families stayed long enough, they also got to see a grand reworks show which hopefully picked them up after their unfortunate one run loss to Columbus. Hopefully next time we will see a win and even more faces from ADC!

We have been walking for most of our lives. We walk without thinking, and often without looking. When we are at home, we know where the furniture is, where the steps are, where doors and appliances are. Accidents happen when a child leaves a toy on the floor, or the dog stretches out across a walk area, or someone moves a piece of furniture without telling us. If we’re not looking where we’re walking, we risk becoming a statistic! At work, you probably know where every single thing is located in your office or in your work area. Unfortunately, the moment you move outside your area, you should treat the environment as though you are a stranger there for the first time. That may sound odd, but it will ensure that you don’t become a statistic at work.

ADC 2016 GOLF OUTINGBy Thad Merritt

Walking/WorkingBy Lloyd Wooster

No matter where you’re walking: - Stick to the approved walk areas. - Use entry doors rather than overhead doors. - Don’t be tempted to jump over obstacles to take shortcuts. - If you must read something, stop, read, and then proceed. - Look around you and be alert to potential dangers. - Watch for fork trucks. - Watch for headroom. - Make sure that loose fitting clothing doesn’t get near machinery or moving objects. - Going around blind corners, look at the at the dome mirrors where placed. - If crossing an aisle, look both ways before you step into the aisle. - Use the handrail when going up or down stairs. It’s not necessary to have a death grip on the handrail, but if your hand is gliding along it, you will have no problem reaching the rail if you slip. - When going up and down stairs, put your full foot on the step. Failure to do so, or putting only the toes and ball of your foot on the step going up, can mean a fall.

When we don’t stay focused on what we are doing,we have accidents. No matter where you are: - Check for blind spots. - Watch for moving equipment. - Watch for possible hazards that cause slipping or tripping. - Every day people are injured because they are not paying attention to where they are going and what is happening around them. Focus on what you are doing, and stay safe!

A sunny day with a high of 84 degrees allowed for the annual tradition of the ADC Golf Outing to continue. The festivities were started with the firing of Tom McKelvey’s cannon and swinging of golf clubs by the sixteen team field. What is starting to become another tradition of the ADC golf outing is the team of Brett Negus II, Steve Decker, Joe Flores and Bobby Holbrook taking first place for the third consecutive year with a score of 12 under par. They had some competition this year by two of the vendor teams shooting eleven under each, with second place being decided by a score card playoff.
