both of which exceeded the fundraising goal of $25,000 each and had more than 400 participants at both events. In addition, she has held the Physicians Outreach Dinner and the Alzheimer’s Disease Education Conference and Expo for the past nine years.
Mary Ann Malack-Ragona, executive director and chief executive officer of Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc., received the Long Island Business News’ Health Care Heroes Award in the category of Community Outreach. A special awards ceremony was held on November 7, 2013 at Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury.
Ms. Malack-Ragona joined what is now known as the Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) in February 2003 and, in 2004, opened The Neuwirth Family Care Center within the agency’s Ronkonkoma office. In 2011, Ms. Malack-Ragona moved the agency to a 9,000-square-foot facility, adding The Mickey & Felice Neuwirth Care Center as a critical care component to the new Resource Center.
In 2011, Ms. Malack-Ragona also opened a satellite office in Southampton, bringing much-needed services to the East End of Long Island. She was also successful in obtaining approval from the Institutional Review Board of North Shore/LIJ to collaborate with the Litwin-Zucker Center for Memory Disorders & Alzheimer’s Disease, bringing a comprehensive clinical evaluation research program to Long Island families. In 2006, Ms. Malack-Ragona, in conjunction with her colleague Robin Lombardo, successfully launched a college-accredited Alzheimer’s Disease training program for professional caregivers. This curriculum has trained over 600 professional caregivers.
In 2008, Ms. Malack-Ragona was appointed by then-New York State Governor David Paterson to the Alzheimer’s Disease Coordinating Council. In addition, Ms. Malack-Ragona is a member of the Long Term Care Councils in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.
Ms. Malack-Ragona has been very successful in raising funds and awareness of this debilitating disease. In 2012, she launched the Riverhead WALK for Alzheimer’s and Clambake and the Westhampton Beach WALK for Alzheimer’s and Fall Festival,

and a VIP reception. In addition, live music was performed by Playground, the No. 1-ranked Four Seasons tribute band, throughout the event.
The Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) 30th Anniversary Gala took place on October 24, 2013 at Jewel by Tom Schaudel in Melville. The event commemorated the organization and raised more than $50,000 for those who suffer from Alzheimer’s Disease.
This year’s honorees were Mark Ordan, chief executive officer of Sunrise Senior Living, and Dignity Home Care. Mr. Ordan was recognized for his work and commitment to caring for those with Alzheimer’s Disease. He joined Sunrise Senior Living in 2008 as the company’s chief administrative and investment officer. He was later named CEO in November 2008. Prior to working at Sunrise Senior Living, he was the CEO of the Mills Corporation, Fresh Fields Markets, and Balducci’s. He also serves as the director of the Greater Washington Board of Trade, and is a founding member of the Young Presidents’ Organization’s National Capital Area Chapter.
Sunrise Senior Living offers several services for the elderly that include assisted living services, independent living, short-term rehabilitation services, and care for those with memory loss or Alzheimer’s Disease.
Dignity Home Care is an agency that helps senior citizens with care services that they require at home. The staff consists of nurses and caregivers that provide the utmost support for the elderly in Nassau, Suffolk, Queens, the Bronx, Staten Island, New York City, and Westchester.

Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. presented a preview screening of Alive Inside: The Story of Music and Memory at the Atria Senior Living facility in Kew Gardens on November 6, 2013. Thirty people attended the showing and a discussion of the film by Dan Cohen, founder of Music and Memory. Following the film, there was a question-and-answer session.
The film – winner of the Sundance Film Festival Audience Award for Best Documentary – documents how listening to music can positively affect patients with Alzheimer’s Disease and other dementias as they are able to dance and recall memories from their youth while listening to music from their era. The movie also mentioned that music therapy can act as an effective alternative to certain medications.
Sponsors for the event included Regal Heights Rehabilitation and Health Care Center, Home Instead of Queens, Dignity Home Care, Atria Kew Gardens, Gutterman’s Funeral Homes of Rockville Centre, and the Music and Memory Project.
Music and Memory is a nonprofit organization that improves elders’ quality of life by prompting their memory with personalized digital music technology. Essentially, Mr. Cohen and other members of the organization train nursing staff, elder care professionals, and caregivers on how to create musical play lists that
trigger memories for those who suffer from Alzheimer’s Disease, dementia, and other cognitive and physical challenges. Dr. Cohen explained how 300 assisted living facilities in the US currently offer this form of music therapy to their patients.

“It is always amazing to see the completed artwork because, in many cases, our Alzheimer’s artists are unable to verbalize but are able to put their thoughts, feelings and emotions into their artwork,” says Mary Ann Malack-Ragona, ADRC’s executive director and CEO. “The purpose of the Art Expression Program is to stimulate the mind through creation, and strengthen self-esteem and relationships.” Individuals participating in the program work in small groups and in a non-judgmental environment where process is more important than the finished product.
Thirty-two sites across Nassau and Suffolk Counties will participate in the Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center’s (ADRC) 2013-2014 Art Expression Program, developed for individuals with a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease.
ADRC has been coordinating this very special program since 2003. The program includes training for professional coordinators, with ongoing support throughout the program year. It culminates with ADRC’s Annual Tea and Art Exhibit where the paintings created by the artists with Alzheimer’s Disease are on display. Family, friends and relatives are invited to the annual event, which is open to the public.

Second Annual Westhampton Beach WALK & Fall Festival A Success

More than 300 individuals and 37 teams participated in the Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc.’s (ADRC) Second Annual Westhampton Beach WALK and Fall Festival at the Village Green in Westhampton Beach. The event was held on October 26, 2013.
Participants in the five-kilometer WALK raised over $52,000 for ADRC and its many programs. Following the WALK, the individuals and teams who raised $100 or more were treated to a fall-themed lunch buffet. In addition, those who lost a loved one or know someone who suffers from Alzheimer’s Disease planted pinwheels in the Hope Garden at the Village Marina.
Additionally, children who attended the event participated in face painting, pictures with Ronald McDonald, and pony rides. Children and adults also indulged in delicious treats and visited local vendors before and after the WALK.
Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) and Suffolk County Community College have teamed up to begin to address a growing need in the care of individuals with dementia or Alzheimer’s Disease. “This is a vision turned into reality,” said Mary Ann Malack-Ragona, executive director and CEO for ADRC. “As we work with our clients and students, we have identified language barriers that have a negative impact on quality care, a core focus for our local health and human services agency.”
ADRC has been training health care professionals since 2003, and, in 2006, launched a 14-week college-accredited Alzheimer’s Disease training curriculum for professional caregivers. ADRC has trained more than 600 health care professionals and, through this process, identified a need to include English as a second language in its course offerings. ADRC contacted Suffolk County Community College for collaboration and the college was able to secure a New York State Workplace Development Grant to assist ADRC in launching this new training program.
The training, which is being taught in ADRC’s newly opened classrooms, is a five-week course facilitated by Jeffrie Chong-Rodriquez, an adjunct instructor at Suffolk County Community College. The course covers speaking in English, listening in English, and US culture. Students will be awarded a certificate of completion upon passing the course criteria.
Sustained workforce development is the key to maintaining and improving the economic engines of Suffolk County. Suffolk County Community College has been a catalyst and leading partner in this effort. The college provides programs and services that contribute to the economic vitality of Long Island through customized training programs, workforce development, and business enrichment programs.

On November 15, 2013, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) was presented with a check for $15,000 on behalf of Roslyn Savings Bank, a division of New York Community Bank, in support of Alzheimer’s Disease research and awareness. Employees from various Roslyn branches across Long Island gathered to proudly present the check to ADRC’s executive director and CEO, Mary Ann Malack-Ragona.
Roslyn Savings Bank has been donating to ADRC for the past four years and is the first Corporate Presenting Sponsor for the WALK for Alzheimer’s on Long Island. The bank held its very own Alzheimer’s Disease Month in August 2013 to raise money for the 10th Annual Old Bethpage WALK & Mexican Fiesta, which took place on September 7, 2013 at Old Bethpage Restoration Village. Last year, the team raised $5,000 during the WALK, in addition to donations made by the bank.
“Our organizations share a common belief: that by supporting the local community, we can make a difference in the lives of fellow Long Islanders,” Ms. Malack-Ragona says. “It is our pleasure to once again collaborate with New York Community Bank and its Roslyn Savings Bank Division and we thank them for their generous donation and continued support.”

Lawrence Davidow, managing partner of the Law Firm of Davidow, Davidow, Siegel & Stern, LLP, came to Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc.’s headquarters in Bay Shore on September 13, 2013 to present ADRC Executive Director/CEO Mary Ann Malack-Ragona with a $5,000 check. ADRC received the money as the winner of Phase II of the law firm’s “Century of Giving” promotion.
The Century of Giving initiative was created by the Law Firm of Davidow, Davidow, Siegel & Stern to celebrate the law firm’s centennial on Long Island. The firm designed a philanthropic celebration that publicly recognizes non-profits that mirror the firm’s mission: serving seniors and special-needs populations. The promotion depends on the participation of voters to decide which organizations will be awarded $5,000 each.

On September 7, 2013, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. hosted its 10th annual Old Bethpage WALK for Alzheimer’s & Mexican Fiesta at the Old Bethpage Village Restoration. One hundred twenty teams and 1,200 individuals came out in support of Alzheimer’s research and awareness.
The event began with a presentation of colors by the Butehorn Brothers VFW Post 4987 in Bethpage and a dedication ceremony for those who died during the September 11, 2001 attacks. Marijane Camilleri, who served as caregiver for her mother who passed away from Alzheimer’s Disease, was the event’s guest speaker. She spoke about the difficulties and challenges she faced caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s Disease.
Walkers toured the village restoration’s scenic grounds and visited some of the historic structures during the five-kilometer (3.1-mile) event. At the end of the course, they planted windmills in the Hope Garden in remembrance of those who are suffering with or passed away from Alzheimer’s Disease.
After the WALK, participants were invited to enjoy Mexican food and live music and dancing at a fiesta-themed celebration. The event included a petting zoo, pony rides, a raffle, and a variety of vendors. Ronald McDonald made a special appearance, taking photos with participants and their children.
Alan Goldman Hosts “A Drive Through The Ages”On October 12, 2013, Alan Goldman, CSA, visited Alzheimer’s Disease Resource
Center, Inc.’s Bay Shore location, where he presented “A Drive through the Ages,” a seminar on safe driving for senior citizens. More than 20 people were in attendance.
In his seminar, Mr. Goldman, a New York State-certified driving instructor and an advocate for the senior citizen community, explained the misconceptions of older drivers, what they can do to keep their driver’s privileges and how to begin conversations with their family members about when they should no longer be behind the wheel. The seminar ended with a question-and-answer session.
According to the Census Bureau, the number of elderly drivers increased 5.3% from 2000 to 2010. The number of senior citizens who continue to drive is expected to triple in the United States within the next 20 years.

More than 220 people — including 18 teams — took part in the Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc.’s (ADRC) Second Annual Riverhead WALK for Alzheimer’s & Clambake in Riverhead on August 24, 2013. Through the efforts of these individuals and teams who took part in this event, more than $30,000 was raised.
Before the WALK, children had an opportunity to visit the animals at a petting zoo and enjoy pony rides. The WALK kicked off with an opening ceremony, featuring a presentation of the colors by the Riverhead chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, live entertainment by the USO Liberty Bells and a keynote speech by Riverhead Town Supervisor Sean Walter, who presented ADRC President Mel Mullin with a proclamation commemorating the event and proclaiming August 24, 2013 as Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Day.
Mary Ann Malack-Ragona, executive director and CEO of Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc., later joined Supervisor Walter and Riverhead Town Board Members John Dunleavy, James Wooten and Jodi Giglio and “Kevin” the penguin from Long Island Aquarium and Exhibition Center in a ribbon cutting ceremony to officially begin the WALK.
The WALK began at Milton L. Burns Park and ended at the Long Island Aquarium & Exhibition Center. Walkers carried pinwheels as a way to remember their loved ones who are suffering with or passed away from Alzheimer’s Disease and planted them in the Hope Garden, located in the aquarium’s courtyard. After the WALK, participants who raised $100 or more were treated to a clambake, buffet lunch, and full access to the aquarium, while children took part in a scavenger hunt. In addition, there were vendors, raffles, and music.
Those in attendance also learned about Alzheimer’s Disease and how to get involved with this critical cause, from advocacy opportunities, the latest in Alzheimer’s research and clinical trial enrollment to support programs and services. It is estimated that 60,000 Long Island residents suffer from this disease.

60 Swimmers and Kayakers Take Part in 10th Annual Distant Memories SwimApproximately 60 swimmers and kayakers took part in the 10th Annual Distant
Memories Swim, which was held on August 5, 2013. The swim was spearheaded by Bryan Proctor, a Huntington resident who started the swim as a way to raise money for Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. and to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s Disease. This issue is very close to Mr. Proctor, as his grandfather and aunt passed away from Alzheimer’s Disease.
The participants started out at Asharoken Beach and swam across the bay to Knollwood Beach in Centerport — a distance of 2.5 nautical miles (approximately three miles). The first swimmer in was Bill Van Nostrand of East Setauket with a time of 1
hour, 3 minutes. Before taking to the water, each participant gave the names of relatives they were swimming for who suffer with or passed away from Alzheimer’s Disease.
“This swim signifies a very strong commitment to our cause by all of these men and women, many of whom have been touched by Alzheimer’s,” said Mary Ann Malack-Ragona, ADRC’s chief executive officer and executive director. “Sadly, the number of individuals with a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease continues to grow. Demand for training, programs, services and referral sources are at an all-time high. This group of dedicated individuals helps to create awareness and raise funds needed to provide a variety of resources for our Long Island families.”

On June 19, 2013, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center Inc. (ADRC) held its annual Tea and Art Exhibit at its headquarters in Bay Shore. The exhibit gave individuals with dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease from 33 sites throughout the New York metropolitan area the chance to showcase their remarkable and creative artistic talents.
The artists created their pieces between September 2012 and March 2013 as part of ADRC’s Art Expression Program, in which ADRC staff members assisted on-site facilitators to help the residents/participants bring their creative thoughts to life. The paintings were available for purchase, with all proceeds going towards the ADRC’s Art Expression Program.
In addition to the artwork that was displayed, tea and desserts were served for all the guests to enjoy. Over 250 families were in attendance for the exhibit. The program is funded in part by the Fay J. Lindner Foundation and the New York State Department of Health.

Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. held its third annual Col. Kenneth F. Lawlor Memorial Golf Outing on July 8, 2013 at the Huntington Country Club. Seventy golfers took part in the event, which raised $70,000 for Alzheimer’s Disease research and care.
Golfers also had the chance to win a car in the Hole-In-One Challenge, sponsored by Mercedes-Benz of Smithtown. After playing a round of golf, the participants enjoyed a cocktail hour, dinner, and a chance to win some raffle prizes.
The event is named after Col. Kenneth F. Lawlor, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease in the last years of his life. His grandson, Keith Lawlor, who chaired the golf tournament, is also vice president of ADRC’s Board of Directors.

Mary Ann Malack-Ragona, the executive director and CEO of Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC), took part in the New York Caregiver Listening Session, which was presented by the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), the Council of Senior Centers and Services of New York City, Inc. (CSCS), and the New York State Caregiving & Respite Coalition (NYSCRC). The session was held on August 13, 2013 at Dowling College and was one of several throughout the state of New York.
The panel was moderated by Neal Lane, the president of AARP New York and — in addition to Ms. Malack-Ragona — included Bobbie Sackman, director of public policy at CSCS of New York City; Holly Rhodes-Teague, director of Suffolk County Office for the Aging; Vicky Meyerhoefer, director of Nassau County Office for the Aging; and Bill Ferris, AARP New York’s state legislative representative.
Panelists and those in attendance discussed the challenges that caregivers face, the trends they are seeing within the industry, whether or not the state of New York is doing enough to address the concerns of caregivers, and potential solutions for such challenges. In 2009, there were 2.8 million informal caregivers in New York who provided nearly $32 billion of unpaid care to family members or loved ones.
“I think it’s crucial that AARP NY is exploring these issues and addressing the concerns of caregivers in the state of New York,” said Ms. Malack-Ragona. “Too
often, we focus on the problems and not enough on the solutions. It’s imperative that caregivers and those they are caring for know they are not alone and that there is support, assistance, and training right here on Long Island.”
