1877: The first bridge (a railroad bridge) across the Colorado River in Arizona is constructed at Yuma Crossing, linking the territory with California without use of a ferry. Southern Pacific 4-4-0 No. 31 was the first to cross the Colorado. The date was Sunday, September 30, 1877.

1913: Tempe Bridge, also called the Ash Avenue Bridge, is completed. It’s the first major bridge over the Salt River and links Southeast Valley communities with Phoenix. Prisoners are the primary source of labor in the project. The concrete arch bridge is demolished in 1991.

1917: Arizona engages in its first federal-aid project with a 750-foot extension to the bridge over the Gila River near Florence. The revamped structure, built in 1910 by Territorial Engineer James B. Girand, was better able to withstand the raging river and lasted until the 1950s.

1929: Navajo Bridge opens. It has an arch of 616 feet, a total length of 834 feet, and a height of 467 feet over the Colorado River. The span becomes the only bridge over the Colorado between the Green River in Utah and Topock Gorge in Arizona — a distance of some 600 miles.

1959: Glen Canyon Bridge, the world’s highest steel arch bridge (700 feet above the Colorado River) opens after two years of construction and $4 million in cost. The deck is 1,271 feet long and the arch rises 165 feet.

2010 — ADOT improves US 93 to a four-lane divided road from Kingman to the new Hoover Dam Bridge. Vehicular traffic no longer passes over the dam. The project wins a top environmental award from the Federal Highway Administration.
