HEADMASTER’S MESSAGE MRS. NATALIE GILBERT

Welcome to Maritime Varsity Academy!

At MVA, we believe that our students have the right to an excellent education and the ability to develop their individual talents as student-athletes. Our small class sizes foster positive learning environments; our dedicated teaching staff encourage students to push themselves academically, and our talented coaching staff encourages the same for students during their individual sports. We help students learn to become accountable for their conduct and encourage the development of positive relationships with others. Character is an important facet of MVA and we promote good character not only through everyday interactions, but with our own Character curriculum.

We challenge students to do their best in all facets of their learning, both inside and outside of the classroom. We encourage our student-athletes to accept their own and others' strengths and challenges and celebrate each other’s successes. We strive to build strong relationships between staff, students, families, and the community, and encourage open lines of communication between school and home.

Maritime Varsity Academy is built upon three pillars: Academic Achievement,

Athletic Excellence, and Exceptional Character. I hope you will consider enrolling your student-athlete at MVA to experience these pillars first-hand and to further his/her education in our supportive, close-knit learning environment.

Sincerely,

Natalie Gilbert

Headmaster

5

The decision to enroll your son or daughter at Maritime Varsity Academy is not just about athletics, it is a total

immersion program that gives each student-athlete the opportunity to learn skills to be successful in life. The

most important aspect of MVA is the academic program that exists and the schooling each student-athlete re-

ceives.

The academic program at Maritime Varsity Academy consists of the core courses required for each student-

athlete: Math, Science, English and Social Studies. In addition, French and Health classes are offered. Credit is

given for the on-ice and off-ice portions of the hockey program in the areas of Physical Education, Human Per-

formance and Specific Sports Skills, and each student-athlete is also enrolled in our Character Development

Program.

The program is delivered using both in house and off-site classrooms as well as online learning resources.

Whenever possible an athlete’s learning plan is modified to encourage their individual growth and cultivate in-

terests outside of their sport. Each athlete will have to make academics their first priority and strive to achieve

marks at his or her highest academic potential, it is not sufficient to just get by. Academic success is monitored

and reviewed with athletes and parents and this objective will be part of his or her goal setting for the year.

As you consider this life changing opportunity we encourage you to contact us directly if we can answer ques-

tions regarding the decision to pursue academic achievement, athletic excellence and exceptional character..

ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT OUR LEARNING SPACE

A Great Learning Environment!

The Maritime Varsity Academy offers a unique learning space for our Student-Athletes at our Dart-

mouth Campus.

To maximize our students learning experience, we incorporate some of the latest and most modern

training tools in our classrooms. In addition to computers, we have installed Interactive "Smart

boards" in most classrooms, allowing MVA’s Academic Staff to energize presentations and motivate

learners.

These Smart boards combine the simplicity of a whiteboard with the power of a computer. The touch-

sensitive display connects to a computer and digital projector to show the computer image. You can

then control computer applications directly from the display, write notes in digital ink and save your

work to share later. Best of all, the full-featured SMART Board interactive whiteboard is incredibly

easy to use.

ATHLETIC EXCELLENCE! HOCKEY CANADA SKILLS ACADEMY

Not just another Hockey School

At The Maritime Varsity Academy, athletic development

is what makes us different from most schools. Our stu-

dent-athletes gain valuable confidence along with a com-

petitive edge by enhancing and developing their person-

al skills.

Our Hockey Canada Skills Academy, the first in No-

va Scotia, provides a structured learning environ-

ment that focuses on developing a player’s technical

and tactical skill set.

This program is designed for all student-athletes, wheth-

er a beginner or an elite athlete, who have the passion to

grow within their sport and achieve success.

Our hockey program is delivered by highly qualified

coaches who have a passion to pass along their expertise

to our students.

Student Athletes will receive instruction each school day,

with on –ice sessions occurring on Mondays, Wednes-

days and Fridays, along with off-ice training on Tuesdays

and Thursdays.

Our on –ice instruction concentrates on developing first

step quickness and the ability to generate speed in a

confined area, the foundations of success in today's

game. Edge work, control, as well as plyometric and ex-

plosive skating techniques are all part of our daily on ice

sessions. Every day, one portion of the on-ice session is

devoted to improving some aspect of the players' skat-

ing technique, speed, quickness, agility, and skating effi-

ciency, and then that aspect of skating is applied to dif-

ferent game situations.

Many of our student-athletes are

some of the top ranked players in

their age groups.

ATHLETIC EXCELLENCE! HOCKEY CANADA SKILLS ACADEMY

A Long Term Approach

Over the course of the school year it is important that the

on ice hockey program covers a wide variety of hockey

components from the Hockey Canada Skills Acade-

my Manual which was developed by some of the most inno-

vative minds in the game today. The coaching staff at MVA

has developed a long term plan that focuses on all aspects

of hockey including individual skill development, general

team skills / tactics, and situational game simulations. To

develop familiarity and structure, all practices will start

with a warm up and goaltending instruction and end with

small area games which develop a player's ability to think

and react to game situations.

Students at Maritime Hockey Academy receive an addition-

al 175-200 hours of hockey specific training on top of their

regular winter and spring team practices. The focus is on

improving individual skills so that our players become

more dynamic players.

Our on ice sessions always consist of skating, puck han-

dling, passing and shooting.

“The Hockey Canada Skills Academy

Program was developed by some of

the most innovative minds in the

game today. ”

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT!

13

ATHLETIC EXCELLENCE! HOCKEY CANADA SKILLS ACADEMY

More than Just Drills

By training with other elite athletes who are focused on

improving their individual skills, our players quickly

gain a competitive advantage over their peers. Each

year, our program attracts top talent. Our players are

grouped according to skill level and our practices are

high tempo and demand hard work. Our coaches know

the game and recognize the importance of quality skill

practices.

Their most important function is not only to teach hock-

ey but to help develop the self-esteem of each and every

player in the program, to make our players feel good

about themselves and believe in themselves. Players are

encouraged to be creative and not to be afraid to make

mistakes. The players have confidence in knowing that

the coaches will not get angry or yell at them for mis-

takes they make.

However, hockey is a game of details. It requires a disci-

plined approach and players learn very quickly that

there are consequences when details are forgotten,

rules are broken or if players demonstrate a poor atti-

tude or a lack of work ethic. The uniqueness about the

discipline we impose is, in most cases, no one gets upset

and that the correction is reinforced so that it doesn’t re

-occur.

“Players are encouraged to be

creative and not to be afraid to make

mistakes”

ACHIEVE YOUR DREAMS!

14

Our Development Team Model

The Maritime Varsity Academy has made application to

operate two High Level Development Teams; a Boys Devel-

opment Team and a Girls Development Team. Both of

these teams will be comprised of players born in 1998,

1999 and 2000. These students will be of a skill level that

is comparable to Midget AAA – Major Midget Level.

Each Team will consist of 20 players, comprising of 2 goal-

ies, seven defensemen, and eleven forwards.

The focus of these teams is to focus on the skill develop-

ment of each player. This skill development will consist of

their individual skill, tactical skill and to develop their un-

derstanding of how to employ these skills in a highly com-

petitive games environment.

The teams will play against other Approved Prep Schools in

Canada and The United States. Game play will either be in

tournament play or exhibition play for the 2015-16 year to

allow the program to establish their level of play.

Each team will target a minimum of 32 games.

Program Goals

The goal of this full-time development program is to pre-

pare student-athletes under the age of 18 for participation

and success in their future hockey careers. Its efforts focus

not only on high caliber participation on the ice, but creat-

ing well-rounded individuals off the ice. Unlike other com-

petitive athletic teams, the success of the our program is

not gauged on wins and losses.

A major component of our Team Program is player promo-

tion and future placement, with tournaments and games

strategically chosen and organized for scouting potential.

Some things in life are more important than sports. One of those things is becoming a good person. At Maritime Varsity Academy, character development is an important part of the daily curriculum.

To prepare student athletes for the challenges of life beyond the arena, Maritime Varsity Academy has developed a comprehensive character building program. Personal Development Programs pro-vide educational opportunities to enhance the student-athlete experience.

These programs support the development of a well-balanced lifestyle for students, encouraging emotional well being, personal growth and decision making skills.

At The Maritime Varsity Academy, our students experience friendships like few other schools. They may be sitting next to each other in class during the daytime, but at night they might be fierce opponents in their sport.

To unite our students, we offer activities such as dances, Spring Carnivals, Hot Lunches, Field Trips, along with having them participate in other sporting activities such as Track & Field and Cross Country.

Each year, Guest Speakers and Instructors are brought in to educate our students about topics which are of interest to them.

Friendships that will last a

A Great Atmosphere

To get the most out of our student-athletes, The Maritime Varsity Academy has created an atmos-phere that is unique compared to other schools. Our atmosphere is created by a dedicat-ed staff whose primary purpose is to deliver an education that challenges our students to achieve their best results in whatever they do. This in-cludes striving to continually improve in their ac-ademic studies, Athletics, and especially, in their personal character development.

Our student athletes have the opportunity to ex-perience "school" with people who promote Aca-demic Achievement by supporting it with Athletic Excellence. Student-athletes will meet and learn from other athletes who have attended Universi-ties to play high level athletics while attain-ing advanced degrees. Student-athletes will be able to participate in group activities that will allow them to broaden their horizons.

All of our students bring a passion with them when they come to school and we let them pur-sue it. This passion, combined with a pride for our school and their fellow students is the perfect recipe for success.

At Maritime Varsity Academy, our goal is to be affordable for all student-athletes who could

benefit from our school.

Since 2007, The Maritime Hockey and Varsity Academy has awarded more than $100,000 in

financial aid to help students experience our programs.

All of our financial awards are need-based on parental income. To apply for financial awards

simply include a letter detailing the financial circumstances of your family, as well as a copy of

your most current income tax return, along with your child’s application form. Decisions for

aid awards are at the sole discretion of Maritime Varsity Academy.

Since personal financial situations may vary from year to year, award applications are made

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS LET THE WORLD JOIN US!

Discover Canada!

The Maritime Varsity Academy welcomes International Stu-dents in grades 9-12 to come experience our challenging ac-ademic and athletic programming. Our School offers an ESL (English as a Second Lan-guage) program for international students and the oppor-tunity to prepare and write the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language). For admission entering our Grade 9-12 program, a TOEFL score of above 500 is required. This will enable students to successfully participate in our academic program. Most North American universities require a TOEFL score in the 560 range for admission.

The school will arrange students to be housed with a Canadi-an family with children of similar age and interests, provid-ing the opportunity to improve language acquisition skills and to experience a Canadian lifestyle.

International students require a Canadian Student Authori-zation in order to study in Canada. When all school fees have been paid, the Admission Office will forward the documents required for application for a Canadian student authoriza-tion. No documentation can be released prior to receiving full payment of school fees.

If you would like more information about studying in Canada and the student authorization process, please visit the Cana-dian Government website
