We are pleased that you plan to apply for admission to the Teaching Diploma or Special Education Diploma programs at the American University of Beirut and hope that you will find the application process relatively straightforward.

The Teaching Diploma Program prepares elementary as well as intermediate and secondary school teachers. It requires specialization in a school subject matter area that should be completed before professional preparation in the Department of Education. The program comprises a total of 21 credit hours in education. The TD/Elementary spans the concentration areas of teaching Arabic and social studies, English and social studies, or mathematics and science at the elementary level. The TD/Secondary spans the concentration areas of teaching English as a foreign language, mathematics, and sciences at the intermediate/secondary level.

The Diploma in Special Education (21 credits) provides knowledge and practical training in the area of special education for gifted children as well as for those with mild learning problems between the ages of three and 15 years.

There are several important aspects of our admissions procedure to which I would like to call your attention:

• The deadlines for applying, the dates by which students are notified of admission, and the date by which students must accept admission as detailed in the “Instructions for Applying” section on the next page.

• Students who decide to enroll will be asked to make a commitment by the deadline in the notification of admission.

Instructions for Applying to the Dodge Foundation Teacher Training Scholarship Diploma ProgramTo be eligible for admission to diploma programs an applicant must hold a university degree preceded by a secondary school certificate recognized by the Lebanese Ministry of Education as equivalent to the Lebanese Baccalaureate Part II, and recognized by the university. The applicant must also have an average in the field of his or her intended diploma programs or related fields, acceptable to the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. Applicants other than AUB graduates must meet the Readiness for University Studies in English (RUSE) described in the 2020-21 undergraduate and graduate catalogues.

A student may apply to one or more majors by completing just one application form, Form 4, with supporting materials as outlined below. Applicants may apply to a maximum of three programs.

Deadlines for Receiving Applications for Admission/Notification DatesApplications for diploma programs should be sent to the Office of Admissions as early as possible and not later than the deadlines stated below.

A complete application includes the following items:

The ProgramThe goal of the Dodge Foundation Teacher Training Scholarship Program (DFTTSP) at AUB is to develop a cadre of highly trained teachers who can contribute to efforts to improve the quality of teaching in Lebanon. It will provide a full scholarship covering all tuition fees for students enrolled in the one-year, 21-credit teaching or special education diploma program.

Eligibility Criteria• Be admitted as a post-BA/BS for teaching or special education diploma in the Department of Education

at AUB; students must already have obtained a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent).

• Meet AUB English language proficiency requirements.

• Be willing to complete the 21-credit diploma in one year.

• Be willing to make a commitment to teach in schools that serve underprivileged students in Lebanon for three years; that is, commit to teaching in schools that are attended primarily by students from socially or economically disadvantaged communities.

• Selection Criteria

• Good academic standing meeting AUB’s minimal admissions requirements for post-bachelor’s programs.

• Financial need as evaluated by the Office of Financial Aid at AUB.

• Personal and professional attributes of the applicant as evaluated by an interview conducted by the Department of Education.
