Correspondence

From various e-mails and letters (and databases) I’ve learned that several members hit some milestones:

November 14, 2009 Charlie and Lyda (Bunnell) Cloud celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary. November 20, 2009 Ed Quickel celebrated his 89th birthday. December 11, 2009 Claude Bunnell celebrated his 89th birthday and Jim Dale celebrated his 81st.

Chet Bunnell, [email protected] or 2000 Bellevue Ave., Apt M, St. Louis, MO 63143-1337, found a book description but hasn’t found the book. I checked on-line and the nearest one to me is in Houston, TX. If you can find The Lynch and Robinson families : our family histories by Edward Conover Lynch, published by E. C. Lynch, Houston, TX, 2004, there is supposed to be some mention of Bunnell as New England Colonists. Might not be anything new, but one can never tell. If anyone finds it I’d appreciate a copy of the appropriate pages.

I’m sure that most of you remember Carol Bonnell, [email protected] or 22717 41st Ave. Ct. E, Spanaway, WA 98387-6151, who, with her sister-in-law Terri, published the newsletter before we took it over. One of the reasons she had to give it up was her husband Larry’s health. I must share with you her recent e-mails that arrived about a day too late to put in the previous newsletter.

Happy to say that Larry and I are cancer free for now. I had a pet scan in Sept and my breast cancer surgery and Radiation for 6 wks last year did the trick. Larry had a stem cell transplant April 6th for Leukemia (they gave him 6 months to live in October 2008) and is doing great!

Larry is a new man, literally. He is now his cell donors blood type and his DNA changed! He is better than he's been the past 10 years. He is healthy, happy and energetic. I had breast cancer diagnosed last June, surgery July and 6 wks of daily Radiation. Larry would drop me off at Tacoma General Hospital for Radiation and go to Allenmore Hospital for Chemo each day. It was a rough summer. Then he was diagnosed with a rare Leukemia called Pure Erythroid Leukemia. So rare that he was treated for Acute Myeloid Leukemia. He was given 6 months to live. The doctor tried some new meds and put him on several medical trials - none of which worked.

He finally recommended a stem cell transplant which was a 20 % death rate. I said that was not very good odds. He said they don't recommend them unless a patient is going to die without one. And it's 100% chance of that.

He told Larry that if he didn't want to do the stem cell transplant, he could keep him alive for about 6 months with meds, but at the end of that he couldn't be helped with a transplant. So he was tested over and over and then his siblings and son were tested for a stem cell match. None of the three matched. But they did find many unrelated donors who did match. In the end he had a donor that

matched not 6 markers (which is good) or 10 markers (which is great) but matched 12 markers, which is wonderful!

I have to say these people who donate stem cells (they extract it from your blood, no embryo, to ease your mind) are angels to us. They don't know who will get these cells and still they go through the painful process of a bone marrow biopsy, then take growth factor shots to grow more cells and then have them extracted. They are hooked up to a machine that extracts the blood cells, which goes through a machine to collect the stem cells (5 million - and who counts these anyway?) and then the blood goes back into the donor.

As you can see, we have very much to be grateful for this year. We are both cancer free, grateful to be alive and looking at many more healthy years ahead. Larry is 65 and I'm 63. Love, Carole Bonnell

I wanted to get this in the previous newsletter but didn’t make it. Joan Murray, [email protected] or 1281 N. Linden Ave., Palatine, IL 60074-7038 wrote:

“The John Butler Chapter, National Society Daughters of the Union, 1861-1865, performed a Wreath-Laying Ceremony for Orville Mortimer Bunnell, my great-grandfather’s brother on November 9, 2009 at the Oakwood Cemetery in DeKalb, Illinois. “Mort” is buried in the Bunnell family plot along with his father Isaac Bunnell, who was born in Tioga County, New York on 13 June 1795; his brother John Bunnell, born Tioga County, circa 1819; his sister, Hannah Jayne (Bunnell) Freeland, born Tioga County, 14 November 1829; her husband, Albert N. Freeland, and their daughter, Jenny Freeland. Orville Mortimer, born 4 August 1823, Genoa, Cayuga County, New York, died 14 March 1896, Chicago, Illinois. He enlisted in the 6th Ohio Cavalry in Oil Diggins, Trumbull County, Ohio on 15 October 1861 and was appointed shortly thereafter to Quartermaster Sergeant. He saw battle

at Strasburg, Woodstock, Mt. Jackson, New Market, Harrison burg, Battle of Cross Keys and Battle of Bull Run. Mort was then sent back to Ohio to work in recruiting where he remained until the end of the war in 1865. After the war, Mort, along with his wife, Nancy Palmer, and first child, Harry moved from Ohio to DeKalb County, Illinois where most of his family had emigrated (some as early as 1855). He farmed in DeKalb, then retired to Aurora, Kane County, Illinois, and a few years later moved to Chicago where he became a real estate agent. Upon his death in Chicago, his body was returned to DeKalb for burial and accompanied from the train station by the Merrit Simonds Post GAR to the Oakwood Cemetery.

Tim Bonnell, [email protected] or 306 N. Angela Cr., Wichita, KS 67235-8431 has been turning up new information nearly every newsletter. He writes:

Dear Bonnell family:

A new picture has surfaced courtesy of my brother Kelly who was going through some items and turned up a real gem. I am pleased to attach the photo taken in Atchison, KS in 1913 or 1914 by my estimation. This is the only good adult photo I know of showing my great grandmother Mrs Edwin Bonnell (Viola Jane), her son Charles Albright Bonnell as well as Minnie Bonnell. I have various adult photos of the others. Helen, the little girl is the daughter of Charles and Virginia Bonnell. In looking at Archie in this photo I can see resemblances to his son and my father Charles Robert Bonnell (not pictured).

All of Viola’s children were born at White Oaks, NM. They all moved back to Atchison, KS after the death of Edwin R Bonnell on 9/28/1893. My grandfather Archie was just one year old when Ed

passed on at age 45. Ed did not leave a will and had considerable business and real estate holdings in the White Oaks area. Due to this and low finances Viola hired White Oaks attorney John Hewitt to be the executor of the estate and moved back to Atchison, KS to be near her recently widowed mother, Martha Albright. It took several years to sell all of the assets and settle the estate.

Best New Years wishes to all., Tim

Kentucky Connections

John Grady, [email protected] or 4218 Oxhill Rd., Spring, TX 77388-5752 provided the following in furtherance of the quest to find the ancestry of the Kentucky Bunnells:

“I keep hoping that a connection can be made for this Kentucky branch of the clan to tie into the New England group. Surely the answer is out there somewhere – but where? I still think that Mercer Co., KY might hold the answers, but ….

Material from my files which you might wish to use in the newsletter:

Barren Co., KY Tax List – 1799. 10 July 1799. WM BUNNEL 100a third rate land on Beaver Creek Entered in name of Wm. Bunnel 1 white male ov 21 3 horses 10 July 1799. STEPHEN BUNNEL 200a third rate land on Beaver Creek Entered in name of Stephen Bunnel 1 white male ov 21 1 white male above 16 9 horses 10 July 1799. JOHN BUNNEL no land 1 white male ov 21 2 blacks 5 horses

The above entries on the earliest (first) Tax List for Barren Co., sent me searching up in Mason Co., KY, trying to connect someway/somehow to Stephen. Obviously, I was not successful. This family later moved up into Ohio (Brown County as I recall, without looking up files) and I followed, but still no luck.”

Hello. I am descended from John Baptist Desnoyer, father of Matilda Desnoyer-Bunnell of Saginaw. Matilda married Willard Bunnell in Saginaw. Do you have any information about the death and burial of John Baptist Desnoyer? I have much information about Willard and Matilda Bunnell.

Ann Marie Middleton

[Ed. Note: I have no information on John, but none the less Ann Marie sent me a tremendous amount of information on Willard (CB320351), his brother Lafayette (CB320352), discoverer of Yosemite, and other family members. So if anyone has any info on the Desnoyer family, please share it with Ann. In the Research Section of the Newsletter you will find an article on this Bunnell family.]

Jean Alexander, [email protected] is seeking information on a John Bundle/Bunnell:

Charlie, John Bundle (later written John Bunnell), died in late 1845 or early 1846 in Jackson County, Indiana.

John Ireland was made guardian of John Bundle/Bunnell's underage daughter, Sarah Bunnell. Since John Ireland had married a Sarah Bunnell (born 1788 in NJ), it looks like this underage Sarah Bunnell is her niece, and that John Bundle/Bunnell would have been the father of the younger Sarah Bunnell, and sister to the older one.

Need information on the parentage of Sarah Bunnell and/or John Bundle/Bunnell.

Thank you.

Jean Alexander

I wrote her as follows: Sarah Bunnell, wife of John Ireland, would be the daughter of Benjamin and Hannah (Golden) Bonnell. If you go to www.williambunnellfamily.org, click on “By Member Number” and then enter in the box 006653, Sarah’s information will pop up. All the blue printing are links to more information.

The 1850 census shows the younger Sarah Bunnell (age 20) living with James and Sarah (Bonnell, age 61) Ireland, Sr. If you notice, on that page there is a lot of intermingling between Bunnell, Ireland and Durham and unfortunately that census year did not require relationships to be listed. But, John and Sarah had been married about 12 years when the younger Sarah was born. We do not have the parents for the younger Sarah. Your assumption that the younger Sarah was the niece of Sarah Ireland is reasonable, but we are unaware of Sarah (elder) having a brother John.

Jean and I corresponded several times and the bottom line is that she is unaware of any source proving that (1) Sarah (006653) is the child of Benjamin Bonnell and (2) that Benjamin Bonnell was married to Hannah Golden. I see both items in Claude’s database and stated in some early newsletters, but I don’t find a source

cited. In Vol. VI, No. 1, page 2, Two books (Portrait and Biographical Sketches of the Willamette Valley, OR and History of Cincinnati and Hamilton County), but I could find nothing in either one that addresses either question. Christine Hanley, [email protected] or 2360 San Clemente St., Laguna Beach, CA 92651, is searching for info on Lafayette Bunnell

Hello,

I am trying to locate descendants of Lafayette Bunnell, the man who helped discover and wrote about Yosemite. Are you aware of any living relatives. If not, do you know a way I might track some down?

Thanks and cheers Christine

I advised her that we are only aware of him having one son, Willard E. Bunnell, and can not find him after the 1870 census when he is 11 years old. Does anyone have any other information about Lafayette’s descendants? Lafayette is 320352 in Claude’s database. His lineage is: William1, Benjamin2, Benjamin3, Gershom4, Job5, Bradley6, Layfaette7.

“I am doing research on my grandmother's family. She was Mary Lee Bunnell. I know we are related to a William P Bunnell and a Durham P Bunnell and an Asa Bunnell whom I believe was my great great great grandfather. I came upon your website and was hoping to find out if I am on the right path by reviewing the documentation on it. Your information lists a lot about Bunnells in the North, however I am in NC. I do believe that Asa came here from either CT or NY. I don't expect you to just give me the history and I need to do the research myself, but if you could please let me know if I am correct in starting on your web site at least I would know where to go!

Any guidance would be appreciated.

[Ed. Note: Her grandmother, Mary Lee Bunnell, is 019765 in Claude’s database and she has provided much of the info to him. Her line only goes back to Mary Lee’s parents, William and Beulah (Scoggins) Bunnell. They are from the Moore County area of North Carolina and it seems logical that they are part of the Durham Bunnell family from that same area and era. But we have no proof.]

Biographies

Charles C. Bunnell. No more familiar figure and substantial business man and patriotic citizen is seen on the streets of Lewiston than the subject of this article. Mr. Bunnell was born in Rochester, New York, on October 5, 1835, being the son of Dennis D. and Eliza (Durand) Bunnell, natives of Connecticut, the mother coming to New York in 1818. When two years old, our subject

came west with the family to Michigan and settled in Marshall. The father farmed there and also conducted various financial operations. In March, 1850, he died and in October of the same year the mother passed away, having returned to New York to be among old friends. Charles C. remained with his brothers, Augustus and D. D., for two years in Milwaukee, then returned to Rochester, New York, and there learned the tinner’s trade. He worked at it five years in Rochester and then went to Michigan for a few months, then on to Portland, Oregon, in May, 1857, whence he took a trip to San Francisco, but returned to Portland, and then to The Dalles, where he did well, saving one thousand dollars [abt. $23,000 today]. He went to Portland in 1860 and opened a tinware and stove store with his brother, D. D. They worked together until 1868. In 1862, however, our subject came to Lewiston. A few people had stopped there the previous year, but Mr. Bunnell is about one of the oldest settlers. He and his brother put up a quartz mill at Sparta, Baker county, Oregon, which proved a financial failure; in 1868, when he and his brother dissolved partnership, the mill fell into his hands and he sold it at a great sacrifice. Our subject started into the tinware business in Lewiston in 1862, manufacturing all his own stock; he soon added hardware and stoves and prosperity came to him constantly. He labored faithfully year after year, gaining a fine patronage by his kind and upright treatment of all and his business became one of the mammoth affairs of the city; he now owns the block where he conducted it, having sold the business, feeling assured that he has well earned the retirement that now comes to him in the golden years of his well spent career. He also owns a number of dwellings and some farms adjacent to Lewiston. 1899 was the date that Mr. Bunnell sold his business and retired from the store. The marriage of Mr. Bunnell and Miss Flora Springer, daughter of Wesley and Rebecca (Shoemaker) Graves, was solemnized on September 22, 1872. Mr. Graves came to Oregon in 1852 and he was proprietor of the Chemetka Hotel in Salem for years. Mrs. Bunnell was born in Knox county, Illinois, in 1845 and was but seven years old when she came with her parents to Oregon. The other members of her father’s family are Johanna Springer, in Lewiston; Mary Lenninger Graves, in Oregon; Mattie Cardwell also in Oregon. Mr. Bunnell’s brothers and sisters are Augustus, William and Dennis D., all deceased. Mr. Bunnell is a charter member of Nezperce Lodge of Masons, No. 10, and has been its treasurer since its organization. He and his estimable wife are members of the First Presbyterian church in Lewiston. He has never sought office in any form and although frequently solicited by friends to accept, he has steadily declined. Mr. Bunnell is one of the real builder [sic] of the county and has been one of its most successful business men, is esteemed by all and highly respected as a worthy pioneer and gentleman of integrity. He has been a director of the Lewiston National Bank since 1888, and for three years was president of the institution.

[Ed. Note: Charles is 320753 in Claude’s database. The statement in the next to last paragraph that Charles had married Miss Springer, daughter of Wesley Graves left me perplexed as it didn’t indicate that she was widowed or divorced and stated she was a Miss. Claude’s database shows that she was the widow of Charles B Springer. The 1880 census shows living with him and his wife are 2 girls listed as adopted daughters, Annie (age 14) and Maria (age 11) Sprenger. There were also a 23 year old nephew, Mezaldus Scott and a 14 year old cook, Ah Hong. I assumed that the girls were daughters of his wife Flora from her first marriage and decided to check earlier census data. The 1870 census shows Flora (age 24) living with a Nicholas P. Sprenger (23), Joana (27), Alice (9), Fannie (7), Annie (4), and Marie (age is hard to read, but appears to be 1). Unfortunately the 1870 census does not show relationships, so I was unsure of the relationship between Nicholas Sprenger and Flora Sprenger. The 1850 census for Ohio showed that Nicholas and Charles B. were brothers. Searching the USGenWeb pages for Oregon I found Charles buried in the Riverside cemetery, Linn Co., Albany county, OR. He died Jan 8, 1869, age 32y4m16d.

So, using Claude’s database and the sources cited above, the series of events is that Flora Graves married Charles Springer in 1865 at the age of 19/20; daughter Annie was born abt 1866; Charles dies in

1869; daughter Maria is born in 1869; Flora and 2 daughters are in same household as her brother-in-law, Nicholas Sprenger (and other unidentified Sprengers) in 1870; She marries Charles Clay Bunnell in 1872 and by 1880 he has adopted both of her daughters.

Charles’ lineage is: William1, Benjamin2, Nathaniel3, Ebenezer4, Israel5, Dennis6, Charles7.]

Willard Bradley Bunnell

Willard Bunnell was born in Homer, Cortland County, NY in 1814, the son of Dr. Bradley and Charlotte (Houghton) Bunnell. By 1815 his family had moved to Rochester, NY and at the age of 10 he ran away from home, first to Buffalo and then as a cabin boy on one of the steamers that plied the Great Lakes. His father caught up with him and brought him back home, but he left again for the lakes and was taken in and trained by a Captain Fox, a friend of his father. By the time he was 18 he was an excellent ship pilot. It was while he was a steam boat captain that he met his future wife, Matilda Desnoyer whose father was a fur trader. The couple married 20 July 1837 in the house of the Justice of the Peace, Abram Whitney, in Saginaw, Michigan Territory. Matilda’s father signed to allow her to marry though under the age of 18. At the time both Willard and Matilda listed their residences as the Town of Saginaw. In 1841 he evidently was still a seaman as an interesting event occurred. As he was helping to unload some goods from the ship into the cellar of a Mr. McDonald’s trading store in Saginaw, he

Page 14: Administrivia · Bunnell/Bonnell Newsletter, V.24, No. 1 February 2010 Page- 2 Submitting items for the newsletter: To help us keep track of the material, please include your name,

and two other sailors spotted a box of money containing $800 that McDonald had hidden. Later that evening they went back and stole it and brought it on-board, bringing the ship’s mate into the plot. However one of the sailors, an Englishman, felt that Bunnell and the other sailor (Dezalia) had shortchanged him and the mate. Seems that the mate and the Englishman had $130 each out of the total $800. The following winter he told Justice Williams at Detroit. A trial was held for the Englishman, the mate and Dezalia. But Willard had heard about the confession and disappeard. At the time, Willard’s parents, brothers and sisters and wife all lived in the Saginaw vicinity. One winter night the town heard that Willard was in the neighborhood and a posse set out to capture him. He was hiding in a wood cutter’s shanty and had just kindled a fire to thaw out his moccasins. With the posse appearing Willard took off barefoot, but an icy crust on the snow lacerated his feet and he had to surrender. He was being held in a hotel (there being no jail) waiting for his feet to heal enough so he could travel to another town that had a jail. The night before his departure one of his brothers, a sister and his wife came to visit him. Evidently a swap was done: the brother and sister supposedly left, leaving only the wife there with Willard. At the end of the evening however, the sheriff found instead the brother and sister were there and Willard was long gone. He ended up with one of the Indian tribes until summer and then went to La Crosse, Wisconsin where his wife joined him. About this time, Willard gave up the ships and sea to become a fur trader like his father-in-law. At some point he had become familiar with the local Indian tribes and had learned some of the languages. He was asked to help with the relocation of the Winnebagoes in 1848 and while doing that he heard that soon the Dakotas led by Chief Wapasha would be relocated. So he obtained a traders license and was allowed by Wapasha onto their summer camp area at the present site of Winona, MN. In 1849 the Chief gave him permission to build a log cabin there about 200 feet from the present Bunnell house. After the present house was built, Willard’s brother Lafayette Bunnell lived in the cabin until 1901. Apparently Willard was not the right type of person to develop a town site. In 1851, when trying to acquire a claim to the nearby prairie area, another claimant blocked Willard claiming that he was there first. Squatter's rights seemed to prevail and occupation of the place was nine/tenths of the law. The controversy finally led to violence. Bunnell and Johnson each destroyed the other's shanty which was their evidence of a claim on the land. There ended up a fist fight which Willard seemed to have won, but none the less, he gave up on that claim to concentrate on his other site down river. There is a fascinating 8 page (349-356) description of this incident in Lafayette Bunnell’s book, source #3 above. However Willard then turned his attention to trying to build a town on the Bluffs above Homer in 1853. Once again squatter’s rights came into play and his rival was a Daniel Dougherty. In this fight, Willard’s thumb was bit to the point of mutilation and eventual amputation. Once again Willard lost the fight. Then finally came the issue of selection of a county seat. On January 2, 1854, the elected county board composed of Bunnell, a compatriot named Pike, and John Laird of Winona. The first vote ended in each member picking their own town. On January 30, 1854, Bunnell and Pike voted for Chatfield and that settled it. In the late 1850s Willard had a new house building the town that he had named Homer, after his home town. It is a rural gothic style and is now owned by the Winona County Historical Society. Willard died in 1861 before the house was actually finished. But his wife Matilda and their children lived there until her death in 1867. Willard and Matilda had 8 children: David, John, Louise, Frances, Minnewah, Minnie, Irene, and Willard.

Matilda is as interesting as Willard. Dr. James Cole, a writer said this of her: “Mrs. Bunnell was the first white woman that came into this part of the Territory of Minnesota to live and the first to make her home … [in] Winona county. … Although remarkably domestic in her habits, and observant of matters connected with her household duties, which make home desirable, she was able to paddle her own canoe and was a sure shot with either the rifle or fowling piece. While in general appearance and manners lady like and modestly feminine, she had remarkable courage and self-possession … The Indians respected and feared her although only a ’woman.’ Mrs. Bunnell was of French descent. Besides speaking French, she was able to converse fluently with the Chippewas, Winnegaboes and Sioux, and had some knowledge of other dialects.”

[Willard’s lineage is: William1, Benjamin2, Benjamin3, Gershom4, Job5, John6, Bradley7,Willard8.]

Books

As I mentioned last time Steve Bonnell, [email protected] or 1523 Good Shepherd Rd, Montoursville, PA 17754, sent me a copy of The Bonnell Genealogy by Sara Rebecca E. Spang, 1992, Scaife’s Valley Press, Williamsport, PA. This is a really nice family record and genealogy. I especially appreciate the first section that provides some (retyped) newspaper clippings, family folklore and photos. All of this adds provides a more personal side of the genealogy data contained in the second section. She also provided pages for future births, marriages and deaths. There are nearly 600 family names listed so the genealogy extends far outside of the Bonnell lineage. The line starts with John Bonnell of Dublin, Ireland. Unfortunately, there is no reference given for that statement. It does not provide all Bonnell descendants of John; for example Steve’s line ends at his great grandfather. However it is a good reference book and interesting reading. If you have any relationship with the descendants of “John of Dublin” you might want to contact Steve to see if he has any copies left.

European Research The continuation of the spreadsheet of BNLs in the UK before 1690 are at the end of the newsletter so that the roster can be removed if desired and all the pages of the spreadsheet kept together. This section will provide other material, information and research findings regarding the BNLs of Europe. From The Irish Times, Dublin, Wed 02 Feb 1997

As mentioned above, The Bonnell Genealogy by Sara Spang asserts that John Bonnell and his wife Nancy Pandry/Farraday were born and married in Dublin, Ireland. Additionally one descendant had reported that

Grandpa Bonnell talked so Irishy that he couldn’t be understood. While neither assertion constitutes proof, it certainly does open the possibility of there being an Irish connection to the Bonnells. To start researching that possibility I started combing on-line sites for possible records. While I didn’t expect to start off with unequivocal proof (when does that ever happen?), I at least wanted to ascertain if there was even any proof of Bonnells being in Dublin during the appropriate time frame, the mid to late 1700s. Supposedly John and Nancy came to America in 1774.

For the second time in a row, I have to kick that can down the road. I was going to run an updated summary of all the material on Thomas Bonnell and family using new material provided by Steve Bonnell and material that Bill Austin had published in several earlier issues of the newsletters.

Also in the next issue will be some info on the Bunnells from Wales. I received an e-mail from a lady who believes she is the last of the Welch Bunnells and that sent me scurrying to the internet for more research.
