We hope everyone had a great first month of school and enjoyed all the different activities that were happening throughout September. Some of the exciting events that happened in September included, the start up of Badminton Mornings, the Terry Fox Run/Walk, our grade 7/8s went to Kortright for a day of team building, our grade 2s took a walk to the T & T Supermarket to buy ingredients for their day of baking, some of our students experienced a motivational day attending Me to We at the ACC, and many of our students represented our school at the Cross Country Meet. The month of October also brings about much excitement which began last week with Curriculum Night. It was wonderful seeing so many parents in our halls visiting classrooms and meeting teachers. During the month of October, our staff will continue their work on Balanced Literacy in the classrooms and exploring Problem Solving in Math. With the in- crease in our EQAO scores in math, we have seen the benefits of focused discussion, col- laboration and instruction in the area of Problem Solving in Math (please visit the EQAO website for more results). Continuing to support and teach our students how to problem- solve in all areas including academic and social areas remains our continued goal. Ashton Meadows Ashton Meadows Public School was pleased to host a Terry Fox Run/Walk on Wednesday,

September 24, 2014. This year marked the 34th Anniversary of Terry Fox's original Marathon of Hope to raise money

for cancer research. The weather was fantastic and we were all out as a school showing our support.

Ms Van Dusen had gathered many Intermediate student volunteers to help run the event. All participants were engaged

and active for the afternoon and the event ran very smoothly. We had asked students and families to support this

worth cause by bringing a $2 donation. Our school goal was to raise $600 and with your help and support we were able

to exceed this amount and raised over $900 for the Terry Fox Foundation.

Book FairBook Fair

The Scholastic Book Fair will be at Ashton Meadows P.S. from Oct. 20-24th, 2014!

Students can select from a wide array of fiction and non-fiction texts along with fun items

like erasers, pencils and posters.

DID YOU KNOW?

60% of all the money raised at the Book Fair goes directly to our school to buy new liter-

acy resources for our students. Our goal this year is sales of $3500.00 which will result

in $2100.00 in funds raised for our school! Let’s put at least one book in every child’s

hand! Help us reach our goal and support the Ashton Meadows Book Fair!

Come to the

“Kingdom of

Books”!

I was supposed to wake up at 6:30 and arrive at school by 7:00. As I looked over at the

clock on my nightstand, the numbers stared back at me- it was 4:37am. I was so excited, I

could hardly go back to sleep. It was October 2nd, and I was about to take a trip to the Air

Canada Center with 14 other members of the Me to We club while most of my classmates

did work and wrote tests.

Why? So that we could attend We Day, which is an annual event that unites young people

who have changed the world for the better. Speakers take to the stage and talk about the

issues that they are passionate about, such as women’s rights or using technology to create

social change, and how each of the 20,000 members of the audience can help.

Free the Children is the organization that started We Day, and is also the organization

that our school’s Me to We club supports. You might have heard of Me to We; whether it’s

collecting food items for food banks, selling treats at bake sales, or raising awareness

about human rights, our club is dedicated to making both local and global change happen.

Keep looking out for more updates about the club and new campaigns we’re starting, be-

cause if there’s one thing that you should take away from reading this, it’s that people of

any age can leave an impact on the world, and that includes you!
