    This document has been compiled t o inform t eachers and cent res of t he correct

    procedures for t he conduct of GCE Music examinat ions and coursework.

    It is essent ial t hat t eachers and examinat ions of f icers st udy t he inst ruct ions and advice

    given, since fai lure t o do so is l ikely t o disadvant age candidat es preparing for t he music

    examinat ions in 2011.

    Sending papers and coursework t o t he wrong examiner/ moderat or(s) wil l delay t he

    marking of a candidat e’ s submission, as wel l as causing great inconvenience t o t he

    examiner(s)/ moderat or(s) involved. Please ensure t hat bot h t he music depart ment

    and examinat ions of f icers are aware of t he fol lowing point :

    i . When sending AS/ A2 coursework and exam papers t o examiners, cent res should ensure t hat t he UNIT NUMBER and PAPER REFERENCE on t he examiner label

    G) Special consideration

    i . Candidat es who miss any component of an examinat ion for a val id reason (eg i l lness or inj ury), or sit an examinat ion whilst i l l or during dif f icul t personal circumst ances,

    could be el igible for Special Considerat ion. The cent re’ s Examinat ion Of f icer should

    complet e a Special Considerat ion Form. The form must be accompanied by evidence

    t o support t he reason for absence or underachievement (eg a doct or’ s cert if icat e).

    i i . This form should be submit t ed t o t he Special Requirement s Depart ment at Edexcel. The cent re should not cont act t he Music Exam Management Team or t heir

    examiner/ moderat or wit h t his informat ion.

    H) Supervision and administration of coursework

    It is expect ed t hat t eachers wil l of fer guidance t o t heir candidat es when complet ing

    coursework. They should, at regular int ervals, check t he progress of each candidat e’ s

    submission. Guidance should not , however, ext end t o t he correct ion of t he work and

    t he t eacher must be conf ident t hat t he work is t he candidat e’ s own unaided work

    before signing t he aut hent icat ion form. It is somet imes dif f icul t for t eachers t o know

  • how best t o help st udent s complet e coursework t asks wit hout laying t hemselves open

    t o suggest ions of malpract ice. In al l cases examiners not only rely upon, but

    appreciat e, t eachers’ professional ism.

    There is guidance on t he websit e and on t he pre-release mat erial .

    Candidat es must not col laborat e on coursework t asks. Access t o t he quest ion paper

    for Unit 5 is only under cont rol led condit ions in t he classroom. Teachers should

    advise st udent s t hat t hey wil l have t o sign a declarat ion before t heir script s are

    submit t ed, and t hat a count er-signat ure may be refused if t here is doubt regarding

    t he aut hent icit y of t he work submit t ed.

    However, t eachers must monit or st udent s’ progress regularly, and before submission

    must look in det ail at each script before agreeing t o count ersign it as aut hent ic.

    I) Internal standardisation

    Cent res are reminded t hat i t is t heir responsibil i t y t o ensure t hat where more t han

    one t eacher examiner has marked work, int ernal st andardisat ion has been carried

    out .

    This procedure ensures t hat t he work of al l candidat es at t he cent re is marked t o t he

    same st andards. The st at ement conf irming t his on t he OPTEMS or t he EDI print out

    must be signed.

    Unit 1: Performing Music 6MU01

    This unit is int ernal ly assessed and ext ernal ly moderat ed.

    The requirement s for t his unit and t he relevant assessment crit eria can be found on pages

    19–38 of t he specif icat ion.

    The t ot al mark for t his unit is 40.

    The fol lowing comment s are designed t o ampl if y or reinforce t he informat ion found t here.

    Centres are strongly advised to make copies of all work submitted.

    Below, we consider:

    • what candidat es need t o of fer for t his unit • t he regulat ions surrounding t he f inal performance • t he recording, which can t ake place at any time during t he course as long as t he

    work is submit t ed by 15 May 2011.

    Candidat es are required t o perform cont inuously for 5-6 minut es. They must not piece

    t oget her t heir submissions over a number of performance occasions. The 5–6 minut es of

    music can be made up of one or more solo and/ or ensemble pieces.

    The 5-6 minut es of music need not be st ruct ured as a coherent programme in t he way

    int ended for t he Unit 4 performance. The cr it erion for choice should be excel lence in

    performance not , for example, variet y for i t s own sake.

    Please note that this time does not include any performance preparation, such as

    tuning or verbal introductions, or audience applause. However, t hese should not be

    edit ed out af t er t he recording has been made.

    Candidates may not duplicate any repertoire in Units 1 and 4.

    Where candidat es of fer ensemble performances, improvisat ion, and/ or Sequenced

    performances, t eachers must ensure t hat t hey are aware of t he det ailed informat ion on

    page 21 of t he specif icat ion (sect ions 3,4 and 5, ent it led Ensemble per f orming,

    Improvisat ion, and Sequenced per f ormances ).

    Performances may be f rom a score, or may be improvised.

    Performances from a score

    The score submit t ed wit h a performance should cont ain suf f icient informat ion t o permit a

    fair assessment t o be made.

    Scores must include indicat ions of rhyt hm, dynamics, et c.

    Tab not at ion, t rack sheet s, chord chart s, et c are accept able as scores only if such det ail is

    present . Reference recordings wil l not be accept ed in l ieu of scores.

  • Improvised performances

    Improvised performances must be accompanied by t he original st imulus, t oget her wit h

    suf f icient informat ion about t he candidat e’ s working met hods t o facil i t at e t he making of a

    fair assessment .

    Recording the performance

    • The recorded 5–6 minut e performance can t ake place at any time during the course as long as t he work is submit t ed by 15 May 2011.

    • The whole 5–6 minut e submission must be recorded cont inuously on a single occasion, and unedit ed.

    • The whole submission can be re-performed and re-recorded at any time, and the better or best performance submitted, but performances on dif ferent occasions

    cannot be edit ed t oget her (see Specif icat ion p 20).

    • There is no requirement t hat an audience is present when t he recording is made, but t his does not mean t hat an audience should be discouraged.

    • Recordings must be made either on audio CD, f inal ised and playable on st andard domest ic equipment , or on MiniDisc

    TM. Please not e t hat i f MiniDisc

    TM are submit t ed,

    t hey must not be in long-play format .

    • Casset t e t apes are not t o be used.

    • Each candidat e’ s work must be on a separat e audio CD or MiniDiscTM.

    • Cent res are request ed t o use one recording format for al l of t heir candidat es’ submissions.

    • Cent res must ensure t hat each CD / MiniDiscTM is clearly label led wit h t he fol lowing informat ion, which should also be announced at t he st art of t he performance:

    Music

    The recording qual it y must be good enough t o ref lect t he candidat e’ s t rue performance

    and t he marks awarded.

    Teachers are advised t o check af t er recording t hat t he qual it y is appropriat e: moderat ors

    cannot give credit for inaudible/ unplayable recordings. Cent res wil l normal ly be cont act ed

    in such circumst ances.

    Before beginning assessment, it is essential that the teacher examiner studies the

    examples of marked performances available at www.edexcel.com * to gain a clear

    understanding of the expected standards. Mark schemes are as simple as possible to

    encourage accurate assessment, the importance of which cannot be stressed too

    strongly.

    The t eacher examiner must use t he correct assessment crit eria for each piece. Assessment

    crit eria for performances f rom a score are found on pages 25–30 of t he specif icat ion, and

    for improvised performances on pages 31–36.

    Teachers are advised t o mark t he l ive performance but should f inal ise t he mark for each

    submission wit h reference t o t he recording.

    The t eacher examiner must use t he correct form, which is available f rom:

    This four-page form should be phot ocopied ont o double-sided A3 paper. The scores/ st imul i

    must be placed inside t his form. Ensure t hat al l det ails are complet ed, including t eacher

    and candidat e signat ures.

    If t he forms are not signed as indicat ed t he work cannot be accept ed.

    Ful l det ails of t he assessment procedure can be found on pages 23–24 of t he specif icat ion.

    The t eacher examiner should begin by using t he hol ist ic marking crit eria (out of 40 marks)

    – for Performances f rom a Score, or for Improvised Performances, as appropriat e – t o give

    an overal l ref lect ion of each piece. Then t he f ive det ailed assessment crit eria t hat fol low

    (each out of 8 marks) must be used t o report on specif ic aspect s of t echnique and

    expression, before t he t ot als arrived at by t hese dif ferent rout es are reconciled t o give a

    single f inal mark out of 40.

    This f inal raw mark out of 40 for each piece wil l need t o be scaled according t o dif f icul t y

    level, as shown on page 37 of t he specif icat ion.

    Where t here are t wo or more pieces in a candidat e’ s submission, t eacher examiners must

    mark and scale each piece out of 40. Then t hey must calculat e t he average t o produce a

    single mark for t he whole submission, out of 40. Where decimals of .5 or great er exist ,

    t hese must be rounded up t o t he next whole number. Any decimals smal ler t han .5 must be

    rounded down.

    If a cent re has more t han one t eacher examiner, performances should be moderat ed

    int ernal ly before f inal marks are awarded.

  • All cent res wil l receive opt ical ly-read Teacher Examiner Mark Sheet s (OPTEMS) and f inal

    marks for al l candidat es should be recorded on t hese and sent t o Edexcel as inst ruct ed.

    External moderation

    Materials submitted after the 15 May 2011 deadline for GCE Music 6MU01 may not be

    moderated.

    Cent res must submit t heir work t o t he ext ernal moderat or by 15 May 2011.

    All cent res wil l receive Opt ical ly-read Teacher Examiner Mark Sheet s (OPTEMS

    Candidat es select ed as a sample for ext ernal moderat ion wil l be indicat ed by ast erisks on

    t he OPTEMS. Final marks for al l candidat es should be recorded on t hese and sent t o

    Edexcel as inst ruct ed.

    If t his sample does not include t he highest and lowest f inal marks, t he work of t hese

    candidat es must also be submit t ed t o t he ext ernal moderat or.

    A complet ed OPTEMS (second yellow copy) cont aining al l t he f inal marks for t he cent re

    should be submit t ed t o t he ext ernal moderat or.

    What centres must send

    For each sampled candidat e t he moderat ion submission must include:

    • t he recorded performance • t he score / st imulus • a ful ly complet ed (and signed) mark sheet f rom www.edexcel.com (Visit

    Centres are reminded that if the submission forms/ recordings/ scores are not submitted

    correctly, candidates will not receive any results.

    Resits

    Candidat es wishing t o re-sit t he unit can use eit her:

    A new recording must be made.

    Manual.

    This unit is ext ernal ly assessed (not moderat ed) coursework.

    The t ot al mark for t his unit is 60. 40 marks are for t he composit ion and 20 marks are for

    t he sleeve not e.

    Al l work for Unit 2 must be complet ed in t ime t o reach t he Edexcel examiner by 15 May

    2011.

    Materials submitted after the 15 May 2011 deadline may not be marked.

    Centres are strongly advised to make copies of all work submitted.

    Candidates re-sitting the unit must use the new Composition briefs for 2011.

    Teachers should ensure t hat t hey have received one hard copy of t he 2011 paper for every

    candidat e t hey int end t o ent er.

    Cent res wil l receive hard copies on t he basis of estimates of ent ries. Copies should be

    despat ched t o cent res soon af t er Christ mas. Each candidat e must hand-write t heir Sect ion

    B Sleeve not e answers int o t heir hard copy.

    Bot h t he t eacher and candidat e must sign t he declarat ion of aut hent icit y at t he back of

    t he paper.

    Section A: Composition

    Candidat es must submit :

    • one composit ion, last ing 3 minutes. This composit ion must be in response t o one of t he four composit ion briefs prescribed in t he 2011 Unit 2 paper

    • a score • a recording.

    Please see t he not e at t he t op of page 44 of t he specif icat ion for t he def init ion of scores

    permissible for Unit 2.

    Section B: The Sleeve Note

    Candidat es must submit :

    • a Sleeve Not e.

    Each candidat e’ s Sleeve Not e is in addit ion t o t heir submit t ed composit ion and refers t o

    t hat composit ion.

  • The sleeve not e must be based on t he quest ions in Sect ion B of t he paper.

    It must be hand-written.

    Composition(s) – Controlled Assessment

    Composit ion can broadly be divided int o t wo processes, research and preparation and

    writing, wit h only t he t ime spent on t he writ ing part of t he process count ing t owards

    t he maximum 14 hours.

    Research and preparation

    This includes any work done prior t o t he writ ing down of t he f inal version of t he

    composit ion. This may involve:

    • considering t he brief • l ist ening t o ot her music • experiment ing wit h suit able melodic or harmonic ideas on guit ar or piano • working out rough draf t s.

    Writing

    Candidat es have a maximum of 14 hours’ writ ing t ime for each chosen composit ion.

    Writ ing t ime wil l t ake place inside t he cent re, eit her in t imet abled lesson t imes or out side

    t hem, as most convenient t o al l concerned. It must be under supervision by a t eacher

    (not necessari ly t he music t eacher), or a member of t he support st af f .

    Recording the Composition

    The Developing Musical Underst anding paper (code 6MU03) is a writ t en examinat ion and is

    ext ernal ly marked. It should normal ly be supervised by t he music t eacher, who is

    responsible for playing t he CD on suit able equipment . He or she must not be t he sole

    invigi lat or.

    The examinat ion runs for 2 hours wit hout a break, after a prel iminary 5 minut es’ reading

    t ime (see det ailed not es on Part A, below). There are t hree sect ions.

    Paper Details: Conducting the Examination

    Part A: Listening (32 marks)

    St udent s should be given 5 minut es’ reading t ime before t he st art of Part A. Af t er t hese 5

    minut es’ reading t ime, t he CD for Part A should be st art ed. The 2 hours’ t iming for t he

    examinat ion begins at t his point — when t he CD for Part A is st art ed.

    All pauses for ref lect ion and writ ing wil l be included on t he CD. The CD must not be

    st opped during t he course of t he examinat ion.

    For Special Consideration candidates who will receive extra time for this examination,

    the additional time can only be added for the writing part of the exam. The CD must

    not be paused.

    The examinat ion must begin wit h Part A. This last s for approximat ely 25 minut es.

    Candidat es must answer bot h of two quest ions, each wort h 16 marks. These quest ions t est

    Part B: Investigating Musical Styles (28 marks)

    In Part B, Quest ion 3 wil l cont ain quest ions on bot h areas of st udy – Inst rument al Music and

    Vocal Music. Candidat es must answer on one of t hese areas only.

    Accordingly, candidat es wil l select either part (a) of Quest ion 3 (on Inst rument al Music) or

    part (b) (on Vocal Music). They must answer bot h sub-sect ions (i) and (i i ) f rom whichever

    part of Quest ion 3 t hey have chosen. Sub-sect ion (i) carries 10 marks, and focuses on a

    single work f rom t he chosen area of st udy. Sub-sect ion (i i) carries 18 marks, and is

    comparat ive, focusing on t wo ot her works f rom t he area of st udy.

    Import ant musical feat ures t hat should be known include resources, form, t ext ure,

    t onal it y, harmony, melody, rhyt hm and met re. These key feat ures help t o locat e a work in

    a social and hist orical cont ext . Candidat es need t o writ e percept ively about music by

    describing, explaining, comparing and cont rast ing musical feat ures and placing t he music

    in cont ext , as required.

    Answers may be in note form or in continuous prose. In bot h cases, examiners will

    Part C: Understanding Chords and Lines (20 marks)

    There wil l be t wo quest ions in Part C. These wil l assess st udent s’ abil i t y t o analyse simple

    harmonic and melodic feat ures in unfamiliar music and t o complet e f ive chords in a SATB

    t ext ure.

    Quest ion 4 (8 marks) wil l require candidat es t o answer on al l or some of t he fol lowing:

    keys, chords, cadences, modulat ions and non-harmonic not es.

    A score is provided in t he quest ion paper, facing t he various quest ions, al l of which must

    be answered. Not e t hat t he music is not played in the examination eit her on CD or l ive by

    t he invigi lat or. It is expect ed t hat candidat es wil l work on t he basis of ment al hearing

    and t heoret ical knowledge. There is no part icular st yle of music prescribed for use in t his

    quest ion – st yles may vary f rom year t o year – but any excerpt chosen must support simple

    quest ions about t radit ional harmony.

    Quest ion 5 (12 marks) wil l require complet ion of a short passage in SATB format . The

    soprano l ine and opening harmonised incipi t wil l be given. St udent s must add al t o, t enor

    and bass t o t he rest of t he soprano part , using t he normal convent ions of four-part

    harmony (no consecut ive 5t hs, et c. ). Space is provided on t he quest ion paper for rough

    work.

    The st yle of t he music t o be set does not require knowledge of t he convent ions of t he Bach

    chorale st yle specif ical ly, but i f such knowledge exist s and can be appropriat ely appl ied,

    t his is accept able.

    For Question 5, candidates may try out their work on a keyboard if they wish.

    The int ent ion is t hat using a keyboard wil l help candidat es t o assess t he correct ness (or

    ot herwise) of work done provisional ly on paper on t he basis of ment al hearing and

    t heoret ical knowledge.

    Candidat es may use a keyboard more t han once during t he examinat ion if t hey wish, but i t

    is not expect ed t hat t hey wil l sit at t he keyboard and experiment for long periods. Each

    keyboard must be in t he view of an invigi lat or.

    The specif icat ion says (page 61) t hat candidat es wi l l not have access…t o any musical

    sof t ware in Part C. This ban is hereby conf irmed. It is in place part ly in st udent s’ own

    int erest s: st udent s can i l l af ford t he t ime t aken t o access sof t ware for such a short

    exercise. It is hoped also t hat simple harmonic and writ ing skil ls may be mast ered wit hout

    recourse t o t echnology.

    • The 12-15 minut es of music can be made up of one or more pieces. For submissions wit h 2 or more pieces, each piece should be timed individually using a st opwat ch.

    • The 12-15 minut es of music must be st ruct ured as a balanced, coherent programme of music. The crit erion for choice should be excel lence in performance not , for

    example, variet y for i t s own sake.

    • Where candidat es of fer ensemble performances, improvisat ions, and/ or sequenced performances t eachers must ensure t hat t hey are aware of t he det ailed informat ion

    Improvised performances

    Recording the performance

    • The recorded 12-15 minut e performance can t ake place at any t ime during t he course so long as t he work is submit t ed by 15 May 2011.

    • The whole 12-15 minut e submission must be recorded cont inuously on a single occasion, and unedit ed.

    great er exist , t hese must be rounded up t o t he next whole number. Any decimals

    smaller t han .5 must be rounded down.

    • A mark out of 10 for Crit erion 6 should be added t o t he scaled mark, giving a f inal t ot al out of 50.

    • Evidence of planning is not required by t he moderat or. St udent s may include a programme not e or some ot her form of writ t en comment ary for t he t eacher. A

    single work can st i l l be considered a ful ly sat isfact ory choice of programme,

    provided t hat t he work chosen has plent y of variet y, and is appropriat e in ot her

    respect s (eg in t he pract ical level of demand it imposes on t he st udent ).

    • If a cent re has more t han one t eacher examiner, performances should be moderat ed int ernal ly before f inal marks are awarded.

    External Moderation

    Materials submitted after the 15 May 2011 deadline for GCE Music 6MU01 may not be

    moderated.

    Composition(s) – Controlled Assessment

    Composit ion can broadly be divided int o t wo processes, research and preparation and

    writing, wit h only t he t ime spent on t he writ ing part of t he process count ing t owards

    t he maximum 14 hours.

    Research and preparation

    This includes any work done prior t o t he writ ing down of t he f inal version of t he

    composit ion. This may involve:

    • considering t he brief • l ist ening t o ot her music • experiment ing wit h suit able melodic or harmonic ideas on guit ar or piano • working out rough draf t s.

    Research and preparat ion can be done out side t he cent re. There is no t ime l imit t o it .

    The result s can be recorded in writ ing or elect ronical ly.

    They can be t aken in and out of t he cent re and referred t o during cont rol led writ ing t ime.

    However, t he t eacher must inspect t hem, and be sat isf ied t hat t hey are t he st udent ’ s own

    work.

    Writing

    Broadly, t his is when t he f inal score of t he piece is produced (eit her in handwrit t en form

    or via a score-writ ing package such as Sibel ius).

    Candidat es have a maximum of 14 hours’ writ ing t ime for each chosen composit ion.

    Writ ing t ime wil l t ake place inside t he cent re, eit her in t imet abled lesson t imes or out side

    t hem, as most convenient t o al l concerned. It must be under supervision by a t eacher

    has been used up in case candidat es need t o make adj ust ment s in t he l ight of a changed

    view of t he result .

    Each candidat e’ s submission must consist of :

    • a score of t he composit ion(s) • a recording of t he composit ion(s) • a copy of t he paper f or Unit 5, cont aining t he signatures of bot h candidat e and

    t eacher, t o aut hent icat e t he work.

    Scores may be handwrit t en, or produced on a score-writ ing package.

    Recordings must be made

    • either on audio CD, f inal ised and playable on st andard domest ic equipment , • or on MiniDiscTM.

    classroom.

    Work must be kept in secure condit ions if t here is more t han one session.

    Outline of Examination Requirements

    Exam dat e: Thursday 23 June 2011, af t ernoon

    Lengt h of paper: 2 hours, preceded by 5 minut es’ reading t ime.

    The reading t ime is not included on t he CD and must be added by t he invigi lat or.

    • Quest ion paper, which includes the skeleton score for Question 2 • CD (for use in Sect ion A of t he examinat ion) • One good-qual it y CD player • An unmarked copy of The New Ant hology of Music for each candidat e.

    The Furt her Musical Underst anding paper (code 6MU06) is a writ t en examinat ion,

    ext ernal ly marked. It should normal ly be supervised by t he music t eacher, who is

    responsible for playing t he CD on suit able equipment . He or she must not be t he sole

    invigi lat or.

    The examinat ion runs for 2 hours wit hout a break, after a prel iminary 5 minut es’ reading

    t ime (see det ailed not es on Part A, below).

    There are t hree sect ions. Fol lowing Part A (List ening), st udent s may complet e Part s B

    (Music in Cont ext ) and C (Cont inui t y and Change in Inst rument al Music) in whichever order

    t hey prefer, obviously t aking care t o ensure t hat t hey have adequat e t ime t o complet e

    each quest ion on t he paper.

    Paper Details: Conducting the Examination

    Part A: Aural Analysis (28 Marks)

    St udent s should be given 5 minut es’ reading t ime before t he st art of Sect ion A. After

    these 5 minutes’ reading time, the CD for Section A should be started. The 2 hours’

    t iming for t he examinat ion begins at t his point – when t he CD for Sect ion A is st art ed.

    All pauses for ref lect ion and writ ing wil l be included on t he CD, which must not be st opped

    during t he course of t he examinat ion.

    For Special Consideration candidates who will receive extra time for this examination,

    the additional time can only be added for the writing part of the exam. The CD must

    not be paused.

    Part A, wit h which t he examinat ion must begin, wil l last for approximat ely 25 minut es.

    Candidat es must answer bot h of t wo quest ions.

    These quest ions t est skil ls of aural analysis appl ied t o unfamiliar music, which are relat ed

    t o t he t wo compulsory areas of st udy. A skelet on score wil l be provided for Quest ion 2.
