  • Administrative Framework Workshop The Butterfly Hotel Colchester, Essex 10-11th June 2003IDC --- Nesstar --- IDC2 --- IDC3 .Sometimes especially in the case of comparative data, there is too much information a lot of information on sampling procedures in different countries on separate files or separate pages, so that it is difficult to put the pieces together

I would start looking at the background variables and comparing them, how they are used in different countries

a thesaurus can be useful to find comparative elements across countries, but to develop a thesaurus that really overcomes differences between countries is a real challenge

However, once the thesaurus was explained she realised that she had used the thesaurus at the UKDA but hadnt realised that it was called a thesaurus (although she is familiar with the word itself). She found it an effective way of searching

even datasets that do ask the same questions in different countries the questions mean something different according to, you know, different cultures, different life styles and everything.

She would find dates, broad themes, narrower themes and size of the dataset (number of cases) very useful as fields to search on. Also, being able to search for coverage (geographical) regions would be excellent
