Transcript of Administrative Challenges - Roundtable Discussion
ICCET/ICCHE Fall Conference 2012 • September 26 & 27, Utica, IL • Roundtable Discussion Notes Topic: Administrative Challenges Issues with tutoring program:
Making academic coaches knowledgeable
Tent cards, posters, email, displays, etc.
Facebook & Twitter to get the word out
Funding is an issue/limited resources
Online students are hard to reach
Technology doesn’t fit new models and traditional academic calendar
Need more staff but have less money
Not enough time, jobs are doubling up
More non-traditional students
More federal regulations for online courses o Difficult to keep track of rules o Some states have higher costs so we cannot accept their students o Can we make those choices to limit students? Is that fair?
How long do you keep non-traditional records? Certificate programs and stackable programs need to keep better records for the credit side.
Badges for online non-credit. How can those be regulated? o Stems from the gaming world wanting instant gratification.
Professional Development ideas for support staff:
Bring in speakers
Have training days
Encourage staff to learn on topics like customer service, basic computer skills, collaboration, conflict resolution, leadership, inter-generational workplaces
Fall kickoff events for Faculty & Staff:
Keynotes, breakouts, before students come back to campus
Have different tracks (program themes) for certain staff/faculty to follow Inter-generational staff challenges:
Older staff follow rules and have a hard time breaking the routine to accommodate new changes
Challenges with grad students and student workers
Mentoring program with students – allow them to be creative and flexible Collaborative ideas:
Connect staff/faculty throughout the institution through holiday themed activities (ie: door decorating contests, trick or treat in offices, make caramel apples at lunch, potlucks)
