SYDJEY.

Dear Sir,

Further to my letter of 7th June, 1954, I have to advise you that the Minister for Lands has recently considered a report recommending details thought necessary for incorporation in the specification for the work of removing human remains and / or surface structures from graves in the Federation Road section of the Park, site for Parish Hall and the Chandler grave area.

Following consideration of this report, the Minister has requested his colleague, the Hon. J. B. Renshaw, M.L.A., Minister for Public Works and Local Government, to arrange for his Department to compile a suitable specification and tender form I or the work involved. The specification is to include the matters which are mentioned in the attached list marked "X".

The Minister has also requested Mr. Renshaw to personally allocate the higaest possible priority to the compilation.of the specification, and when the neces;ary copies of this document, together with tender forms, are received in this Department, action will then proceed towards the early calling of tenders for the work.

I shall communicate with you again at a later date regarding this matter.

Yours faithfully,

Secretary, Camperdown Memorial Rest Park Trust,

Town Hall, S Y 1 N R

Dear Sir,

I refer to my previous correspondence relative to the questions of suggested extension of the retained area of Camperdown Cemetery and the type of wall to be erected on the common boundary of Camperdown Memorial Rest Park and the Cemetery.

These matters were originally discussed at a conference held ri the Department eight months ago and, at that time, you were :ood enough to undertake to obtain the views of the Trust thereon. owever, no advice has yet been received from you in this regard.

I feel sure you will aprreciate that the Department is anxious to reach an early firm and sound decision on these questions after carefully considering the representations made by interested bodies.

No such decision can be reached, however, until the views of your Trust are known and, in the circumstances, I shaD be pleased to receive your personal co—operation by expediting your reply to the matters under reference.

Yours faithfully,

Under ary.

Mr. C.S. Garth, Secretary,

Camperdown Memorial Rest Park Trust,

Parks and Recreation Department, Town Hall,

SYDNEY

Dear Sir,

Camperdo'wn Cemetery Reconstruction.

Further reference is made to your letter of the 26th ipril, 1955, regarding a resolution by the Camperdown Memorial Rest Park Trust that this Department give con-sideration to the removal of the grave structures and human remains of the Cripp.s grave and their replacement in the cemetery area.

Investigations disclose that there are two grave areas in the uncleared western section of Camperdown Memorial Rest Park in which the remains of persons named "Cripps" were interred, viz:-

(i) Cripps grave, Section 14 (old Cemetery Sectional plans), about 20 feet north of the well known Moore family graves, and about 20 feet south-east of another prominent grave area, Bodenham. Copy of inscription on stone herein and designated UB 65"

1 (2) Crippe Vault, Section 2 (old Cemetery Sectional

plans), about 0 feet north-west of the prominent • Duwaresq vault. Copy of inscription on stone

herein and designated "B78".

Under the provisions of the Camperdown Cemetery Act, the surface structures only of grave area (i) afore-mentioned are required to be moved by this Department and placed along the boundary wall to be erected, provided that the structures are reasonably capable of being moved and are suitable for re-erection.

Grave area (2) a'oovementioned (and thought to be the rave referred to in your Trust t s letter of 26th April, 1955) is a "perpetual care" grave and is affected by a sep-arate section of the act. In this case, approval has been given for exhumation of the remains and re-interment in the retained cemetery area, including re-erection atx surface structures.

However, it has not yet been possible to commence the cleuring of the western section of the Rest Park. As

mentioned in my letter of 11th Rugust, 1955, the Department is at present endeavouring to have a contract let for the clearing of the Parish Hall site and the Federation Road sections of the Cemetery. The latter project must be aff- orded priority, but upon its completion it is hoped to give

attention t o/, ., , ,

attention to the uncleared western section of the Park area as the next phase in the reconstruction programme.

The Trust's request has been noted, and I am di-rected to advise you that the necessary exhumations and/or removal of surface structures of the two Cripps' graves will be carried out as early as pr acticable, at the same time as operations are put in hand in respect of other graves in the uncleared western section of the Park area.

Dear Mr Garth.

Re Carnperdown Memorial Rest Park.

1- The Trustees of the Camperdown

Cemetery would be most grateful if you could have the brick wall of

the Rest Park adjoining the vacant land in Australia St re-erected.

The wall is down allowing vandals

to enter and cause damage to memorials etc, which is now becoming worse

now the school holidays have commenced.

Your help in having the seine

completed before the Holidays would be appreciated and save the Trustees

a lot of worry to preserve the monuments.

Yours Very sincerely

Dear Sir,

'Milford" Monuments - Camperdown Memorial Rest Park.

I enclose a copy of a letter dated the lLth December, . 1955, from Mr.A.V. Idilford, from which it will be noted that

a request has been made that a tree be planted in the subject Park to mark the site of the "Milford" family grave.

This grave is situated in the Federation Road section of the Rest Park area, about 100 feet from the Church Street end of that section. According to the old Cemetery burial registers, the grave contains the remains of 6 members of the Milford family, including the late Judge Samuel Frederick Milford, who died in 165, aged 68 years. The grave is being treated as "historical" by this Department for the purposes of the Camperdown Cemetery Act (Section L(6)(b)). The relatives have asked that no exhumations be carried out, and, accordingly, the surface structures only (monuments, curbing, etc.) are to be transferred to a new site within the retained portion of the Cemetery. It is anticipated that this Department's contractor will complete the transfer of the monuments early in 1956.

•r- Mr. A.V. Ivlliford has been informed that his re-quest relating to the planting of a tree is being referred to the Trustees. He has been suitably informed in regard to the other matters mentioned in his letter of lLth December, 1955. I would therefore be glad if the Trust would give consideration to the request and inform Mr. Milford direct of its decision.

Yours faithfully,

Re Milford MonumentsçamDerdown Memorial Rest Park.

With reference to the approaching removal of the abovementioned Monuments which means that the present site of the graves will be obliterated, myself and relatives would be glad if the location could be marked by the planting of a tree (preferably an Australian Gum) thereon.

In this connection would it be possible for your Department to furnish me with a sufficient description of the present site of the Monuments?

Would you kindly let me know the probable date of the proposed removal of the Monuments.

I shall also be obliged if you will kindly furnish me with a copy of the various inscriptions on the subject Monuments as I understand same have been recorded in your Department.

Thanking you.

Yours faithfully,
