Course Introduction The 2-day master class focuses on new repair and inspection processes for future generations of composite aircraft structures and beyond. The objective of the master class is to prepare the current (legacy) and new generation of maintainers with the wide scale introduction and use of composite parts in aircraft and the introduction of a new aircraft such as the A350 and the B787. The master class is organised on the backdrop of significant changes in the Aircraft Maintenance, Repair & Overhaul (MRO) market, i.e. continued annual growth of the installed base (4% or more); need for more added value for MRO companies, due to longer inspection intervals of the new aircraft; more stringent rules on corporate and social responsibility, reduction of carbon dioxide footprint, increased competition and need for faster turn-around times etc. Furthermore, a large legacy workforce need to be retrained in new technologies and repair processes and, at the same time, more attention should be paid to in-country self-sufficiency and to create more indigenous capabilities. This master class aim to address at least a number of the future challenges, i.e. focus on the introduction of new repair capabilities, contributing to the economic growth of the Singapore region and improve its (international) competitiveness by adding unique capabilities and at the same time making steps towards a reduction of composite waste by repair rather than replace action.

Both the Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology (SIMTech) and the Integrated Composite Repair, Inspection & Training (ICRIT) possess significant theoretical and practical knowledge on the required new repair processes. ICRIT has successfully demonstrated the need for a dedicated master class in Singapore. Who Should Attend This master class is designed for senior management, engineering or operation managers, engineers, inspectors & supervisors.

Why This Course • Understand various composite materials • Understand repair techniques • Performing adequate NDT inspection and understanding various NDT techniques, interpretation

and results• Understand the impact of Structural Repair Manuals and other standards that form the basis for

the repair and NDT processes• Obtain an overview of the new developments regarding large scale inspection and inspection

data collection.• For educational sector: Need to incorporate special modules into the standard educational

programs (curricula will be made available)

What Can I Expect

The master class includes both theoretical and practical sessions.

The theoretical sessions will include an overview of the current composite material, related design and engineering aspects, various aspects and consequences for repair and inspection, various NDT inspection technologies, use of Structural Repair Manual.

The practical (hands-on) sessions will allow participants to perform a real repair on a composite structure, and perform and understand activities such as damage analyses and mapping, stepped repair, bonded repair (hot bonding), use of NDT techniques.

The practical session will be done in a workshop/industrial area at a large workbench, that will allow the participants to work on their own practical experiment. They will be instructed to damage a substrate, assess damage with NDT method and start preparation for repair. Sanding and bonding will be done in a controlled area with sufficient dust extraction etc.

Mr Paul van IJsselstein BSc is the President of ICRIT and CEO of STRATAGEM Group B.V. Integrated Composite Repair, Inspection & Training (ICRIT) was established in 2015 and is dedicated to the development of new repair and learning processes for “maintenance of the future. Paul has more than 30 years’ experience in the aerospace sector and has provided industrial leadership to many small and medium-sized businesses. As the CEO of the STRATAGEM Group, he has been instrumental in developing new “MRO product-market combinations” through market and product research and innovation. He is specialised in using an “out of the box” approach to achieve real breakthrough and unique “best of industry” MRO solutions for a global market. During his career, Paul has worked for companies such as Fokker, Airbus Space & Defence, Thales and Boeing and had postings in the United Kingdom, USA and Australia. Mr Rick van Opdorp is the Technical Director at ICRIT and owner of ACRATS Training Services and Composite Trade since 2013. Rick started his career in the Royal Netherlands Airforce, after completing a four-year vocational training program at the Aircraft Maintenance & Training School as an aircraft engineer. As a specialist in structural repair, he received further training at Boeing Training Systems & Services, the Airbus Helicopter Training Academy and the Agusta Westland Training Academy. During his time with the Airforce, he had built up a significant knowledge of structural repair and inspection methods, particularly for helicopters. After retiring from the Airforce, he started his own company and developed a unique, practical and training concept for metal and composite structural repair. In 2015, he participated in a feasibility study into the repair of a primary structure for a maritime application in close relationship with a NDT inspection method.

Dr Isakov Dmitry has received his M.Sc in Physics from the Moscow State University and his Ph.D in Electrical & Computer Engineering from the National University of Singapore. He has been working as a research scientist with SIMTech since 2008. He is an expert in failure analysis. Since 2011, he has been working on Aerospace NDT through the development of advanced thermography NDT, which resulted in two filed patents. He has also successfully completed two projects, in collaboration with The Boeing Company, within the Aerospace Programme under the Singapore’s Agency for Science Technology and Research (A*STAR). Dr Stefanie Feih is a Senior Scientist in SIMTech’s Polymer Joining Technology Group. Stefanie completed her engineering degree at the Darmstadt University, Germany, and her Master’s degree at the Cornell University, USA. In 2002, she received her PhD in Engineering from the Cambridge University, UK, and has since then worked in United Kingdom, Denmark, Australia and Singapore in research fields spanning the aerospace, wind and maritime industry. Stefanie has over 15 years of international research experience in virtual design, analysis and testing of composite structures, including joints and repairs. She has published over 110 international journal and conference papers in this field. Dr Feih joined SIMTech in 2015 and is leading one of the on-going composite repair projects in collaboration with Singapore Technologies Aerospace.

Trainers’ Profile

Upon Completion of the Master Class Upon completion of the master class, participants will be capable of performing inspections and repairs of composite structures. A certificate of successful completion will handed out after the master class. The curriculum of the course is directed under the auspices of a Part 147 training organisation.
