Adhemax® Neutralizer CrProtects the Adhemax® Activator SF and Adhemax® Activator NA from oxidation caused by drag-in of hexavalent chromium

Version: 03

Doc.-No.: 2161

1. Process Information

Adhemax® Neutralizer Cr is based on a hydroxylamine compound.

Adhemax® Neutralizer Cr protects the subsequent process steps – especially the Adhemax® Activator SF and Adhemax® Activator NA - from drag-in of hexavalent chromium and sulfite and therefore increases their stability and lifetime.

Compared to other reducing agents, the drag-in of Adhemax® Neutralizer Cr into the Adhemax® Activator SF and Adhemax® Activator NA is less critical.

2. Equipment

Tanks Polyethylene, polypropylene, PVC

Heaters Glass, porcelain, PTFE (only needed in the winter in unheated rooms)

Exhaust Recommended.

Agitation Not required, however recommended (mechanically or by pumps)

Filtration Not required.

3. Make-Up

Make-Up of 100 l Liter kg

Water, deionized 95.0 ---Adhemax® Neutralizer Cr 5.0 5.5

Fill the tank with the required amount of deionized water. Add the Adhemax® Neutralizer Cr while stirring.

4. Working Parameters

Temperature 25 °C (20 – 30 °C)

Treatment Time 1 min (1/2 – 2 min)

pH About 4, cannot be used for monitoring the bath

Density About 1, cannot be used for monitoring the bath

5. Maintenance

A special maintenance is not necessary. However, as soon as the color of the solution turns yellow, which is an indication of hexavalent chromium impurities in the bath, a new make up must be carried out.

Generally, a new make up becomes necessary after a throughput of about 2 m2 surface per Liter bath. If the reducer is used as described, the color of the solution will change from yellow to green during mixing the reducer with chromium(VI)-containing solutions which corresponds to the reduction of hexavalent chromium to trivalent chromium.

Evaporation and drag-out losses must be replenished with a 5 % solution of Adhemax® Neutralizer Cr.

8. Recommendations for Wastewater Treatment

This product contains complexing agents and therefore cannot be sent to the general circulation of rinse water. The wastewater generated by this product must therefore be treated separately.A mixing with Ni-containing waste waters has to be avoided.

Rinse water

Rinse water (1 : 100) can be sent directly to the acidic/alkaline wastewater system for common precipitation at pH 8.5 – 9.5 and neutralization with the use of calcium hydroxide and caustic soda.

Concentrates and higher concentrated Rinse water

Concentrates, also in presence of Ni-ions, should be diluted with the rinse water in the ratio of at least 1 : 3 before sending to the wastewater treatment plant and can then be treated by adding Sediganth C at a pH of 4 - 10.

Indication of complete precipitation can be obtained potentiometrically. The amount ofSediganth C (approx. 8 – 12 ml per 1 g heavy metal) has to be determined by a prior test (as described below.)

Then adjust the pH to 10 with calcium hydroxide to precipitate also the included chromium.

For better flocculation add flocculation agent (we recommend polyacryl amide/anionic with a mol mass of 4 – 6 million) and stir. Allow the precipitate to settle for better filtration.

After filtration is complete the filtrate must not be mixed with metal ions bearing waste streams.

After a reaction time of about 30 min. the solution will be filtered over a special filter press.

To determine the required amount of precipitation agent

0.1 ml precipitation agent Sediganth C is added to 100 ml of rinse water sample at a pH of 4 - 10, being continuously stirred. After a reaction time (while the solution is stirred) of 5 min., the solution to be treated has to be clear

and colorless. When another 0.1 ml precipitation agent Sediganth C is added no further clouding should appear.

The resulting ml of precipitation agent Sediganth C for 100 ml rinse water sample gives the amount of precipitation agent in liter for 100 l rinse water to be treated.

Procedure:

Place 5.0 ml** sample into a 500 ml Erlenmeyer flask and dilute with 50 ml DI water, and mix with 10 ml Ammonium iron-III-sulfate solution and 10 ml 2.5 M Sulfuric acid. Then bring the sample to the boiling point. After keeping the solution at

boiling point for 5 minutes, fill up to 250 ml with DI water and add 2 ml Phosphoric acid (solution gets clear). Heat up the solution to 60 °C and titrate with Potassium permanganate volumetric solution 0.1 N from clear to weak red/violett.

Calculation:

Consumption Potassium permanganate 0.1 N x 3.76*** = ml/l Adhemax Neutralizer Cr
