elcome to the 18th Annual Art Directors Guild Excellence in Production Design Awards. Tonight we are here to recognize the invaluable contribution our members, as leaders in the field of

narrative design, make in the creation of the art of moving imagery.

We are also here to celebrate two individuals whose exceptional body of work merits the most prestigious of honors the Art Directors Guild can bestow. For Outstanding Contribution to Cinematic Imagery, we pay tribute to Martin Scorsese; and this year our Lifetime Achievement Award is presented to Rick Carter. Both gentlemen are artistic and creative heros to many. It is a privilege and great pleasure for the Art Directors Guild to honor you both.

Again the Hall of Fame inductees all gifted us with an extraordinary legacy that will continue to inspire and energize all of us and the generations to come who choose to make Production Design and Art Direction their life’s work. With much admiration and respect, the Art Directors Guild admits Robert Clatworthy, Harper Goff, and J. Michael Riva into our Hall of Fame. Over the 77-year history of the Art Directors Guild, the delivery systems for the moving image narrative have never ceased to evolve. When we were founded in 1937, though television existed commercially, it was not the household commodity that it became in the 1950s. Art Direction for this nascent media was literally non-existent until the late 1940s. It was considered by some to be a threat to the motion picture industry, by others it was beneath their dignities to participate, and yet by some like Charles Lisanby (1924 - 2013) whom we lost this year, embraced the media, working as a pioneer to develop the field as its own art form and helping to define scenic design in early color television.

When these awards were established 18 years ago, television was a thriving sector of the world of visual storytelling for moving images. The Art Directors Guild, therefore, has always honored television’s leaders in Production Design and Art Direction. Tonight, for the first time, we launch a new award category to honor designers who are working in the newest of delivery systems, the fledgling province of Internet broadcasting and series created specifically for that media. Having designed one of these projects myself, I must say we all felt as though the experience must have been much like that of early television. Congratulations to all you pioneers.

Also tonight, I must thank our presenter Kohler for their generous contribution to our celebration. In my experience, Kohler has always been a major supporter for product placement for any show. Innately, they seem to understand the speed at which we must work, drop-shipping any of their product line with flawless immediacy.

To quote past president Tom Walsh, we are all “unique individuals who possess the gift of visualization that enables us to look at nothing and see everything!” Congratulations to all you wizards, pioneers, and masters of our profession.

Marty –

Cinema will be forever indebted to your vision,

which is in a class all by itself.

Congratulations on an iconic career and a

much deserved honor.

Page 7: Adg awards journal 2014

Welcome to the 18th Annual Art Directors Guild Awards, an evening celebrating the Artists and the Art of Production Design for the moving picture.

Tonight’s gala honors the achievements of 2013. The depth and variety of the work of our honorees tonight, the talents who brought these projects to visual life, staggers the imagination. It has been a rich year for visual storytelling on all sizes of screens! So much to see and so little time! Congratulations to all of tonight’s nominees.

Although we face constant evolution and change in the technologies used in our arts and the business models of production and distribution continue to grapple with economics and audience accession, the work remains true to its essence. The challenge we accept on each project to turn the imaginary into reality is proof of the unique and broad-ranging skills and talents of our colleagues.

Tonight we recognize Rick Carter with the Lifetime Achievement Award. His career has embraced the convergence of the physical environment and the computer-generated image and his talent to weave a seamless visual tapestry of the two worlds are a testament to his imagination, talent, and skill. His beginnings on Bound for Glory to his recent Oscar-winning designs for Avatar and Lincoln, and the list of projects between, identify landmarks in production design…Congratulations Rick!

This evening’s Hall of Fame inductees are Robert Clatworthy, Harper Goff, and J. Michael Riva. Robert and Harper’s impact on Production Design in the second half of the 20th century cannot be underestimated, and though J. Michael’s career was cut short, his work bridged both the last century and this and was prolific and profound. I know you will enjoy the work shown to you tonight of these three remarkable men.

It is a privilege to recognize Martin Scorsese with the Cinematic Imagery Award. His work as a director has always been innovative and passionate, insightful and surprising but most of all, centered in truth. His films are visually truthful, both figuratively and even literally and rich in detail. As the ally of the Production Designer and the rest of the artistic team, he is the best of friends, a great collaborator.

It is proper and correct that we gather once a year to celebrate the outstanding achievements of our colleagues in the magical art of Production Design. The Art Directors Guild, Local 800, is proud to present this evening of sharing the joy we find in the work, and congratulates all of tonight’s honorees.

A nother year, another embarrassment of riches to celebrate in the realm of design achievement in motion pictures, television and commercials. Front and center this year at ADG’s 18th Annual

Excellence in Production Design Awards, presented by Kohler, are, of course, the Designers (and their teams) of the nominated films referenced in the pages of this book.

Besides looking at their work, and watching, with great interest, as the winners are announced in their categories, we will also be honoring Martin Scorsese with our Cinematic Imagery Award, Production Designer Rick Carter with our Lifetime Achievement Award and Robert Clatworthy, Harper Goff and J. Michael Riva on their inductions into the Guild’s Hall of Fame.

Director Scorsese’s work speaks to generations of moviegoers as, in applying all of cinema’s tools at his disposal, he ennobles the human condition. And Rick Carter and our newest Hall of Fame inductees show in their work that the limits of what is possible in storytelling by design can, indeed, be transcended.

As always, it should be a great evening. Enjoy.

Born in Illinois on the last day of 1911, William Robert Clatworthy began his film career as a unit art director at Paramount in the late 1930s, hired—like so many others—by the studio’s Supervising Art Director Hans Dreier. His first credit was a Paramount staple, Bulldog Drummond’s Peril (1938). Mr. Clatworthy worked steadily, assisting Dreier and the other unit art directors, but failed to advance in that highly talented and competitive art department.

In 1943, he accepted an offer from Supervising Art Director John Goodman to move to Universal. He thrived there and remained at the studio for 19 years. Often working with limited budgets, he created impressive sets—nightclubs, dark bars, oppressive offices and menacing urban landscapes, often shrouded in mist or fog, or awash in a hard, driving rain. Whatever the genre—noir thriller or science fiction—an expressionist style dominates his designs. Two of his earliest films, Christmas Holiday (1944) and the great Phantom Lady (1944), both directed by Robert Siodmak, set the standard for Hollywood film noir.

During his Universal years, he worked on some of that studio’s best hard-boiled melodramas. Orson Welles’ Touch of Evil (1958), set in the fictional Mexican border town of Los Robles, is typical of Mr. Clatworthy’s designs at their best. The seedy town’s dirt, dust, and garbage provide his mise-en-scène: a world where grime, trash and disarray become metaphors for evil. Mr. Clatworthy excelled in location design, and Los Robles was actually shot in Venice, a neighborhood in Los Angeles, “because part of the town resembled the covered walkways in Tijuana.”

His best known film of this period is unquestionably Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho (1960). Its production design is among the most memorable in all of cinema: the haunting Bates mansion sitting alone atop a hill, inviting the unwary. The house, built on the Universal backlot specifically for the film using stock parts from buildings on Colonial Street, was based on a 1925 Edward Hopper painting, House By the Railroad, in the collection of New York’s MoMA.

Mr. Clatworthy was equally adept at other genres, including some colorful comedies that were completely devoid of his darker style. Midnight Lace (1960), The Parent Trap (1961), That Touch of Mink (1962), Bedtime Story (1964) and Cactus Flower (1969). Two dramatic films directed by Stanley Kramer stand out among Mr. Clatworthy’s later films: Ship of Fools (1965), a 1933 ocean voyage from Veracruz to Bremerhaven, shot entirely on a soundstage at Columbia’s Sunset and Gower lot; and Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner (1967), Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn’s last film together, shot there as well.

Mr. Clatworthy was nominated five times for an Academy Award, for Psycho, That Touch of Mink, Inside Daisy Clover (1965), Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner and, winning his single Oscar® statuette, Ship of Fools.

He died March 2, 1992, at age 80 in La Cañada-Flintridge, California, but not a week goes by that at least one of his films isn’t screened in theaters or on television in most American cities.

Illustrator and Art Director Ralph Harper Goff, a lifelong model train enthusiast, first met Walt Disney in 1951 at a model shop in London. “When he asked me what I do for a living, and I told him that I was an artist, he said, ‘When you get back to America, come and talk to me.’” Ultimately, Mr. Goff would join the artistic team of the Walt Disney Studios and embark on an exciting lifelong journey developing motion picture and Imagineering projects for the company, a relationship that continued until his death. His extraordinary work gave a distinctive character to a number of Disney productions.

Born in Fort Collins, Colorado, Mr. Goff later moved with his family to Santa Ana, California. He attended Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles and lived in New York for a time, working as a magazine illustrator for publications including Collier’s, Esquire, and National Geographic.

He returned to the West Coast to work as a set designer for Warner Bros., at a time when studio set designers drew illustrations as well as working drawings, on such films as A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1935), Errol Flynn’s Captain Blood (1935), Charge of the Light Brigade (1936), Sergeant York (1941), and the classic Casablanca (1942). Later he created the submarine, Proteus, for the film, Fantastic Voyage (1966), and was promoted to art director on Pete Kelly’s Blues (1955), The Vikings (1958) starring Kirk Douglas, and Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971).

Initially, Mr. Goff was hired to sketch storyboards for a True-Life Adventures short called 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Instead, he designed sketches for a potential feature film he envisioned, based on the Jules Verne novel by the same title. After Mr. Disney studied the eight 4’ x 8’ storyboards filled with imaginative designs, the Walt Disney Studios produced its first all live-action film made in the United States. Mr. Goff is specifically credited with many of the finest inventive effects in the film, and is given the screen credit: “Production Developed by...” He designed the menacing exterior of the Nautilus submarine, along with plush Victorian interiors for every set and compartment within the vessel. In 1955, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea won Oscars® for color art direction and best special effects.

He also contributed heavily to the early renderings and concept art for Disney’s proposed Mickey Mouse Park (which became Disneyland), including Main Street, U.S.A. and the Jungle Cruise. He worked closely with Mr. Disney throughout the entire design and construction of the Park. He also developed conceptual ideas for several areas of the Walt Disney World theme park, and in 1975 also contributed to Epcot Center, designing the layout of the World Showcase, and concepts for the Japan, Italy, and United Kingdom Pavilions.

Mr. Goff also played the banjo in the seven-piece Dixieland band called Firehouse Five Plus Two, formed by Disney staff members and led by trombonist Ward Kimball. They toured around the country and released 13 LP albums between 1949 and 1970. After he passed away on March 3, 1993, in Los Angeles, Harper Goff was posthumously named a Disney Legend.

John Michael Riva was more than just a great production designer; he was the ultimate industry insider: his father a Broadway scenic designer, his mother an actress, his grandmother...Marlene Dietrich.

Born in Manhattan, one of four brothers (John Peter, John Michael, John David, and John Paul), to William Riva and Maria Elisabeth Sieber, a German-born actress, Mr. Riva prepared at the Institute Le Rosey in Switzerland for six years before attending UCLA.

He did not rely on his connections, but built a long and prestigious career slowly, arriving in the industry at the start of the movement that came to be known as New Hollywood, when everyone wanted to make the next Easy Rider or Bonnie and Clyde. Low-budget films, shot on location, often with untested directors, became the backbone of the major studio release schedules, and Mr. Riva was a perfect fit. He worked in his early years for young directors such as Oliver Stone, Rick Rosenthal, Hal Ashby, and Richard Donner.

He met Robert Redford in 1980 while working on Brubaker and the following year, when Mr. Redford directed Ordinary People, he called Mr. Riva for one of the latter’s first large projects. The picture won four Oscars® and a host of film critics’ awards. In quick succession, he designed a couple of cult classics, Halloween II (1981) and The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension (1984). Director Hal Ashby called him for Sluggers Wife in 1985, and Warner Bros. brought him in to work with Richard Donner on Goonies (1985). That film cemented a friendship and working relationship with Mr. Donner that would continue through a dozen films and, perhaps just as importantly, enabled Mr. Riva to work with the film’s producer, Steven Spielberg.

When Goonies wrapped, Mr. Riva moved on to Mr. Spielberg’s next directing project, The Color Purple (1985), and received one of the film’s 11 Oscar nominations. From that moment on, he was in nearly constant demand as one of the industry’s leading designers of immense, tent-pole franchises directed by Richard Donner, Sam Raimi, Rob Reiner, Jon Favreau—series such as Lethal Weapon, Iron Man, Charlie’s Angels and Spiderman. He designed Tango & Cash (2005) for Andrey Konchalovskiy and Michael Crichton’s Congo (1995).

In between films, Mr. Riva was called upon to design the opening ceremony of the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, and the 74th and 79th Annual Oscar show and telecast (2002 and 2007). He was nominated for an Emmy for both Oscar shows, and received the award for the 79th event. He was nominated by the Writers Guild of America for the original screenplay, Lily in Winter, a 1994 MOW produced by Showtime.

Mr. Riva suffered a stroke in New Orleans while preparing to head to the set of Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained. Nearly a week later, on June 7, 2012, the married father of four sons died, surrounded by his family.

His work will live on for generations, in nearly 50 imaginative audience-pleasing films that have brought in more than $3 billion at the box office. 23

RICk CARTER grew up in Los Angeles where he was surrounded by the movie industry; his father was a publicist for Jack Lemmon. Carter attended UC Berkeley in the late 1960s, worked in New York City and became a world traveler for two years before settling in Los Angeles.

Carter’s first job in the Art Department was on Hal Ashby’s Bound for Glory in 1976 followed by The China Syndrome in 1979. In 1985, Carter met Steven Spielberg while art-directing The Goonies. This began his long association with Spielberg and Amblin. He designed 42 episodes of Amazing Stories, which partnered him with a virtual Who’s Who of Directors, including Spielberg, Martin Scorsese and Peter Hyams, to name a few.

Carter began working with Robert Zemeckis in 1989 on Back to the Future Part II and Part III and has continued to work exclusively with Spielberg and Zemeckis for the last 25 years. These films include Death Becomes Her, Jurassic Park and its first sequel The Los World, Forrest Gump, Amistad, What Lies Beneath, Cast Away, A.I. Artificial Intelligence, The Polar Express, War of the Worlds, Munich, War Horse and Lincoln.

Carter took on a three-year challenge with the groundbreaking Avatar in 2009 for another successful director—James Cameron. With this, he won his first of two Academy Awards for Art Direction (an honor he shared with Robert Stromberg). The second was for Lincoln in 2012.

Rick Carter is currently hard at work as the Production Designer for J.J. Abrams on the much anticipated Star Wars: Episode VII.

Congratulations to J. Michael Riva

This young live oak tree was planted as a memorial to J. Michael Riva at Evergreen Plantation in Louisiana. He spent many creative and thoughtful days here with us during the filming of Django Unchained. He became a dear friend to us all.

When he shall die,Take him and cut him out in little stars,And he will make the face of heaven so fine,That all the world will be in love with nightAnd pay no worship to the garish sun.

—William Shakespeare
