Open Competition & Entry Submission Requirements

Section 1. - Overview

The Art Directors Guild Council of the Art Directors Guild would like to invite all creative artists and designers to participate in an open competition for the creation of a new “Excellence in Production Design” Award Trophy which would represent the unique talents of Production Designers, Art Directors, Set Designers, Illustrators, Matte Artists, and Graphic Designers which comprise The Art Directors Guild of the Motion Picture Industry. The New Trophy will be presented to Lifetime Achievement Selections, Directors who best represent the Guild’s cinematic vision and winning Production Design candidates at the 20th Annual Excellence in Production Design Banquet in January/February of 2016.

Section 2. – Open Competition

Submission of Designs for the new “Excellence in Production Design” Award Trophy is open to all members of The Art Directors Guild - Local 800 comprised of the four crafts: Art Directors,Set Designers / Model Makers, Illustrators / Matte Artists & Scenic and Title Artists. All designs mustadhere to the submission guidelines outlined as in the following sections.

The winning entry will receive a $2,000.00 Award from the Art Directors Council.

Section 3. - Submission

All Designs must be submitted to:

Section 5. – Trophy Design Requirements.

• Trophy Design Maximum Boundary Parameters – 5 ½”wide x 13” height x 5 ½” depth. Includes base. (See Example 1)

• Each Trophy Design may use up to four (4) Mount Boards to display different two dimensional representative views of the Trophy. CAD mounted documentation with specifications accepted.

• Trophy Designs may be submitted in any medium. o Ink, Charcoal, conte crayon, oil, watercolor, gouache, acrylic, marker pens, colored

pencil, pastels, etc. All original artwork submissions shall have the necessary fixative sealers applied to the artwork before submission.

o Adobe Illustrator, Corel paint, Photoshop, AutoCAD, Vector works, Sketch Up, Rhino, Maya, 3ds Max, and or any digital image software generator may be used for creating a submission, as in a Three Dimensional image in a Two Dimensional presentational Format. (No digital video After Effects images at this time.)

• Trophy Design Submissions shall only be in a two dimensional artwork or photographic presentation format for Gallery 800 display, judging, and voting by members of the Art Directors Guild. No Collages or Sculptures will be accepted.

• Applicant’s name and personal information will be kept anonymous and applicant’s submission of Trophy Designs will be assigned a corresponding identification number for purposes of display, judging, and equality in voting procedures.

• Individual Applicants may submit more than one Trophy Design. • Each Trophy submission image must be contained within an 11” x 17” image canvas, center

mounted on a 15” x 20” Super Black museum mount board (Bainbridge or equivalent) in a portrait orientation. No Exceptions. (See Example 2)

Section 7. - Intellectual Property

• All submitted work must be original and not based on any pre-existing design. • Entrant warrants that the submitted design is not under consideration by any third party. • The winning entries will become the sole property of The Art Directors Guild and maybe

displayed publicly at The Art Directors Guild Gallery 800 and on Art Directors Guild Web Sites. • The final winning entry will be registered by The Art Directors Guild and Entrant agrees to

transfer all rights and title to the Entry to The Art Directors Guild in accordance with the Requirements of this competition.

• Submissions not chosen will remain the property of the submitting artist(s), return pending

are registered trademarks of The Art Directors Guild.

• Trophy Design can be of any Geometric shape consisting of a Trophy Base and Trophy Icon, which shall maintain the maximum boundary parameters while incorporating “The Art Directors Guild Logo” and the award’s name, “EXCELLENCE IN PRODUCTION DESIGN” in Uppercase Futura Medium Font. (See Font Specifications on Page 6)

• Trophy Base can be of any Geometric shape and material consisting of and including an area that must accommodate an engraved plaque, plate, medallion, or shield of any material finish containing the Year, Category (of undetermined length) Recipients Name, and the Name of Show or Production.

• Engraving on base plaque, plate, medallion, or shield to follow font usage guidelines of Future Medium Layout and point sizing by Media and Publications Committee.

• Trophy Design Submissions cannot contain copyrighted images or material.

Section 6. - Final Selection and Voting Procedure

TROPHY & TROPHY BASE REQUIREMENTS

Submitted Trophy Designs will be on display at The Art Directors Guild Gallery 800 in March of 2015 at which time Art Director Council Board Members will select by majority vote 5 submissions. The final 5 submissions will be on display for voting by all members of The Art Directors Guild considered to be “in good standing”.

Art Directors Council Excellence in Production Design AwardEntry Submission Requirements Section 8. – Art Directors Guild Logo - Registered Trademark and Dimensional Use Specifications The red block featuring the stylized letters A, D & G is the registered trademark of the Art Directors Guild and for purposes of this competition is to be creatively incorporated as a Trophy Design Element along with the Title “Excellence in Production Design”. ADG Logo usage and display for purposes of this trophy must conform to the following specifications for Three Dimensional trophy display.

The logo was designed by noted typographer and designer, Doyald Young (1926-2011)

The Art Directors Guild logo is a registered trademark. The ® mark is approximately 1/24 of the logo and must appear in print. The mark may be omitted in other instances with prior approv-al (ie, when used as a scenic element on stage, etc).

The channel or line of the logo is always the background color of the surface it appears on.

The logo may never appear as an outlined form .

The logo may be used in shades of black, grey, white; etched, frosted or clear if used with trans-parent surfaces such as glass or plexi; metallics and other natural materials such as gold, silver, or bronze; while foil finish is generally preferred for metallic materials, it is not required.

Dark red Pantone 201c is preferred when used in color.

Avoid using the logo at less than 1/2" in size. If a smaller logo is required, please contact the Publications & Media Committee of the Art Directors Guild for additional guidance.

Incorrect use of the logo!

This use of the logo is allowed under limitedcircumstances where the background is

the physical substrate of an object. Example: a plaque where the red appears in relief

on a black surface, or an enamelled pin.This version of the logo never appears in print.

FONTS

When the words “ART DIRECTORS GUILD” or “EXCELLENCE IN PRODUCTION DESIGN”appear as a graphic element, the font shall be Futura Medium weight preferred, with all letterfonts in uppercase format. Suggested foundry Linotype.

At this time, decisions regarding complimentary fonts are left up to the supervising directors, councils and/or committees responsible for the finished product that utilizes the logo (ie. as used pm advertising literature, premiums, etc.)

Section 8. - Acceptance Participation constitutes the Entrant’s full and unconditional agreement to and acceptance of these Competition Rules. By participating in the Competition, the Entrant is representing and warranting that he/she has read and understands, and agrees to be bound by, these rules. Including rules referred to herein, these Competition Rules constitute the entire agreement between the Entrant and The Art Directors Guild in relation to the Competition. They govern the Entrant’s participation and supersede any prior or other agreements between the Entrant and The Art Director’s Guild and relating to the Competitions
