  • PERFORMANCE NOTES

    The score aligns notes according to their correct ensemble, except between figs.9 and 10, where the alignment is not fixed.

    Vertical dotted lines indicate coordination between parts. Where a coordinationpoint is the first beat of a bar, a barline is drawn through the whole system(between piano and strings) to replace vertical dotted lines.

    A cue line is added above the piano part at various points to clarify the rhythmicrelationship between piano and strings and to aid coordination. At figs. 6 and 11the rhythm of the string parts is cued in the pianists metre. At fig. 18 the pianopart is written in the metre of the string parts (this is cued in the string parts).

    Small notes in the piano part (page 11 ff ) indicate subsidiary voices, to be playedat a softer dynamic than the large-sized notes in the same passages.

    The prevailing tempo of the piece does not necessarily need to remain the samethroughout. It may fluctuate according to the tensions of the structure, alwaysdepending on circumstances. The tempo of = 88 is correct at the start; notnecessarily for later sections.
