various opportunities for hands on learning. All lessons,

activities, and trips provide the students with an opportunity

to experience, explore, and experiment – something that we

value as a supplement to the curriculum.

March has been an especially challenging month for

grades 3 through 8. The students were busy preparing for

not only the Morrill Term final exams but also for the NYS

English Language Arts and Math Exams. In addition, Middle

School students have been busy preparing entries for several

academic contests and our photographers led by Ms. Fregara

entered the annual People & Places Photo contest. Although

the students and teachers had a busy month, as always we

got through it! It is now time for a well deserved break, so

that everyone will be ready to begin the last term firing on all

cylinders! Just a reminder that the school's 150th

Anniversary Gala will be held on April 25th, 2013. This will

be an extraordinary event and we look forward to

everyone's participation and attendance. Tickets are going

quickly - please reserve your seat if you haven't done so

already! Happy Holidays!

From the Assistant Head of School

By Ms. Iphigenia Romanos

We’re on the cusp of April—and the final

stretch—of the school year. This month will be

very exciting, as several events are coming our way.

First and foremost, the 150th Anniversary Gala is

being held on Thursday, April 25th at Gargiulo’s in

Coney Island, in which I can assure you that a

splendid time is guaranteed for all! Second, there

are other big happenings that are going on in the

Upper School wing here at Adelphi.

Students who have participated in the

grade booster program offered during the spring

break, “You be the Judge” and “Asteroids, Meteors,

and Comets: Visitors from Beyond,” will be able to

share their experiences of both programs with the

rest of the student body. Students enrolled in the

“You be the Judge” program will be performing a

mock trial in front of the student body during

assembly while those enrolled in “Asteroids,

Meteors, and Comets: Visitors from Beyond” will

present their findings from a trip arranged for them

to see an actual, live observatory. These

presentations should be fun-filled as well as

informative!

The month of April will come and go

rather quick, so it is never too late for students to

start planning ahead and thinking about final exams.

This year’s senior class especially should be aware

of this, as their final exams are not being held

during June, but rather at the end of May. This is

the perfect opportunity for all Upper School

students to start refreshing their memories on

materials learned from the beginning of the school

year, as final exams are—cumulative. The best

strategy when studying for the all-important end-of-

year examinations is to take all information piece by

piece and to spread out reviewing ahead of time.

Students do not want to fall into the habit of

beginning to review for final exams a few days

before they are being held.

The end of the school year also calls into

mind several other questions: how many times has

a student been absent from school? How many

times has a student shown up late? Were any

penalty fee for each outstanding week after the deadline

date. Any family interested in re-enrolling at Adelphi for the

coming year must indicate their intentions immediately in

order to secure a seat for your child.

Enjoy the beautiful April weather!

April springs on the season of renewal,

new beginnings and festivals. Let’s work hand-in-

hand with our Adelphians and organize, prioritize

and tune in towards bettering the rest of the school

year. It would be most resourceful in helping our

Adelphians make a list of objectives that they can

check off daily. In constructing this list, we would

like to request that you include events that revolve

around Earth day, and how important it is to not

neglect our Earth. Putting forth efforts in being

friendly to our earth will help our community grow

to being responsible and thoughtful members of

tomorrow’s society. Also, music is an important

tool in communication. April is a month dedicated

to appreciate jazz, and it’s important to seek

culture and expression.

We are now seven months into the

school year and our students are learning and

growing each day. Since September they have made

great strides academically and socially. Our students

have made significant progress through the

nurturing environment that is provided at Adelphi

Academy. Teachers and support staff are continuing

to work together to meet the needs of each

student. The students of Project Succeed put forth

great efforts in their education, they take pride in

their work and are motivated to do well.

March has been a very busy month! Another round

of Progress Reports were completed and the Morrill term

came to a close as students reviewed and prepared for final

exams. Lower school students celebrated the 100th day of

school by working collaboratively to create projects to

represent the number 100! The Middle and Upper school

students prepared for their final exams and the Model

United Nations students along with their advisor Mr. Assante

participated in the Annual Conference at the Hilton in

Manhattan.

Our second round of report cards will kick off the

month and we spent a great deal of time reviewing and

preparing the students for their final exams. Adelphi begins

final examinations in the first grade – they are of course age

appropriate! It is never too early to teach responsibility,

good study habits, and strengthen test taking skills.

Although the students will need time to recover from their

final exams, it is important to continue to emphasize the

importance of reading and studying. We all believe that

completed? Have all extracurricular and athletic

requirements been fulfilled? Students expressing

concerns about absences, community service hours,

and extracurricular requirements should see me

immediately. There is still time left during the

school year to meet the appropriate benchmarks in

order to move on to the next grade.

As we’re getting ready to close out the

150th school year, there are many exciting events to

be held and many other things to be taken care of.

The end of the year may be just around the corner,

but the most exciting parts of it have yet to happen.

I give you all my best wishes during this wonderful

spring season.

The Adelphi Academy Middle School has

successfully completed the 2013 winter! As flowers bloom,

we are all looking forward to the bright colors and scents of

the spring! The middle school students will be spending more

time outdoors gardening, learning, singing, and completing a

variety of activities.

The middle school students have also been busy

participating in local photograph and poetry contests. All

photography entries have been submitted, and I look forward

to the creative and inspirational poems our middle school

Adelphians will submit.

Upon returning from a lengthy 2 weeks off, the

middle school students will return to Academy with a

demanding month ahead of them. The school wide Science

Fair is will take place in May, and has grown into a prestigious

annual event for exchanging ideas and exploring technologies

between students of the academy. Students are encouraged

to use the Science fair as an important key to gathering

valuable science experience while they pursue an

independent project of their own choosing. The process

consists of finding a suitable topic, developing a detailed

hypothesis, researching, and developing an experiment based

on the scientific method. Finally, students are also expected

to create and attractive display and interactive presentation

for the entire community to enjoy.

April also marks the start of New York State

English Language Arts and Mathematics examinations. The

students have been busy throughout the school year

preparing for the exams. ELA exams will be given Tuesday,

April 16 – Thursday, April 18, 2013, and mathematics

examinations will take place Wednesday, April 24 – Friday,

April 26, 2013. I have the utmost faith that all our students

are fully prepared, and will succeed in their exams. Please be

sure that your child receives a full 8 hours of sleep followed

by a balanced breakfast, so that they may be awake and well

rested during their examinations. I wish all of our students

the best of luck!

Finally, Adelphi Academy’s 150th Anniversary Gala

will take place on April 25, 2013 at Gargiulo’s! It is certain to

be the event of the year and wonderful experience for all

those who attend. On behalf of the middle school I look

forward to seeing you all there!

unpredictable weather one day cold the other hot, snow,

rain. We were anticipating April even though it is a

pretty flowers.

of the students have traveled abroad or just spent quality

time with their family. The teachers and friends of the lower

the pictures of how they all enjoyed their Spring Break.

is happening this month. This month we have our

150 years of existence. We are one of the few institutions

that have been in existence for this great number of years.

The venue for this extravagant event will be at the famous

Gargiulo’s in Coney Island on April 25th. It will be a black tie

affair. This is the event that you do not want to miss. It will

be history in the making! Dr. Blash, one of the many

honorees that will be attending, is looking forward to seeing

you as a representation of our Adelphi family. So, hurry and

get your tickets because they are going fast. The lower

school teachers and students are very excited about this

event.

The lower school students and parents are so

happy about the After School enrichment program. They

love all the different sport clinics that Adelphi Academy has

to offer. The students just completed the Bowling clinic, the

last day of bowling students had a pizza party and everyone

received a trophy. It was such an exciting Day! The students

anticipate the next clinic which will be Tennis. They will learn

the fundamentals of Tennis and have fun doing so.

activities, and trips provide the students with an opportunity

to experience, explore, and experiment – something that we

value as a supplement to the curriculum.

March has been an especially challenging month for

grades 3 through 8. The students were busy preparing for

not only the Morrill Term final exams but also for the NYS

English Language Arts and Math Exams. In addition, Middle

School students have been busy preparing entries for several

academic contests and our photographers led by Ms. Fregara

entered the annual People & Places Photo contest. Although

the students and teachers had a busy month, as always we

got through it! It is now time for a well deserved break, so

that everyone will be ready to begin the last term firing on all

cylinders! Just a reminder that the school's 150th

Anniversary Gala will be held on April 25th, 2013. This will

be an extraordinary event and we look forward to

everyone's participation and attendance. Tickets are going

quickly - please reserve your seat if you haven't done so

already! Happy Holidays!

From the Assistant Head of School

By Ms. Iphigenia Romanos

We’re on the cusp of April—and the final

stretch—of the school year. This month will be

very exciting, as several events are coming our way.

First and foremost, the 150th Anniversary Gala is

being held on Thursday, April 25th at Gargiulo’s in

Coney Island, in which I can assure you that a

splendid time is guaranteed for all! Second, there

are other big happenings that are going on in the

Upper School wing here at Adelphi.

Students who have participated in the

grade booster program offered during the spring

break, “You be the Judge” and “Asteroids, Meteors,

and Comets: Visitors from Beyond,” will be able to

share their experiences of both programs with the

rest of the student body. Students enrolled in the

“You be the Judge” program will be performing a

mock trial in front of the student body during

assembly while those enrolled in “Asteroids,

Meteors, and Comets: Visitors from Beyond” will

present their findings from a trip arranged for them

to see an actual, live observatory. These

presentations should be fun-filled as well as

informative!

The month of April will come and go

rather quick, so it is never too late for students to

start planning ahead and thinking about final exams.

This year’s senior class especially should be aware

of this, as their final exams are not being held

during June, but rather at the end of May. This is

the perfect opportunity for all Upper School

students to start refreshing their memories on

materials learned from the beginning of the school

year, as final exams are—cumulative. The best

strategy when studying for the all-important end-of-

year examinations is to take all information piece by

piece and to spread out reviewing ahead of time.

Students do not want to fall into the habit of

beginning to review for final exams a few days

before they are being held.

The end of the school year also calls into

mind several other questions: how many times has

a student been absent from school? How many

times has a student shown up late? Were any

penalty fee for each outstanding week after the deadline

date. Any family interested in re-enrolling at Adelphi for the

coming year must indicate their intentions immediately in

order to secure a seat for your child.

Enjoy the beautiful April weather!

April springs on the season of renewal,

new beginnings and festivals. Let’s work hand-in-

hand with our Adelphians and organize, prioritize

and tune in towards bettering the rest of the school

year. It would be most resourceful in helping our

Adelphians make a list of objectives that they can

check off daily. In constructing this list, we would

like to request that you include events that revolve

around Earth day, and how important it is to not

neglect our Earth. Putting forth efforts in being

friendly to our earth will help our community grow

to being responsible and thoughtful members of

tomorrow’s society. Also, music is an important

tool in communication. April is a month dedicated

to appreciate jazz, and it’s important to seek

culture and expression.

We are now seven months into the

school year and our students are learning and

growing each day. Since September they have made

great strides academically and socially. Our students

have made significant progress through the

nurturing environment that is provided at Adelphi

Academy. Teachers and support staff are continuing

to work together to meet the needs of each

student. The students of Project Succeed put forth

great efforts in their education, they take pride in

their work and are motivated to do well.

March has been a very busy month! Another round

of Progress Reports were completed and the Morrill term

came to a close as students reviewed and prepared for final

exams. Lower school students celebrated the 100th day of

school by working collaboratively to create projects to

represent the number 100! The Middle and Upper school

students prepared for their final exams and the Model

United Nations students along with their advisor Mr. Assante

participated in the Annual Conference at the Hilton in

Manhattan.

Our second round of report cards will kick off the

month and we spent a great deal of time reviewing and

preparing the students for their final exams. Adelphi begins

final examinations in the first grade – they are of course age

appropriate! It is never too early to teach responsibility,

good study habits, and strengthen test taking skills.

Although the students will need time to recover from their

final exams, it is important to continue to emphasize the

importance of reading and studying. We all believe that

community service and in-school service hours

completed? Have all extracurricular and athletic

requirements been fulfilled? Students expressing

concerns about absences, community service hours,

and extracurricular requirements should see me

immediately. There is still time left during the

school year to meet the appropriate benchmarks in

order to move on to the next grade.

As we’re getting ready to close out the

150th school year, there are many exciting events to

be held and many other things to be taken care of.

The end of the year may be just around the corner,

but the most exciting parts of it have yet to happen.

I give you all my best wishes during this wonderful

spring season.

our lucky strikes bowling program. Every Monday and

Thursday the lower school is driven to Maple Lanes, where

they each bowl two games. Each player has their scores

tracked and weekly updates are given on their average, high

game, and high series. The students have improved

dramatically from day one and games have reached in the

100 pin range. Isaac, Jade, Katherine, and Hazel have all

scored over 100 and have averages in the 80’s. The program

Pride ~ Tradition Spirit ~ Excellence

Under the supervision of Mrs.

Herman and Mr. Cavorley, the

class put on a late seventeenth

century dance exhibition set

to the music of Sir Henry

Purcell. The dedication put

forth by the dancers and the

instruction by the Faculty was

heartwarming to this writer,

and it gave evidence that all

was well in the sacred halls of

the Academy. It was an easy

task to close my eyes and

imagine the young men in a

neat coiffed wig and bright

waist coats dancing with

young ladies in beautiful

gowns wearing beautiful

finery. The assembly stage was

for the minutes transferred

into and English castle replete

with chandeliers filled with lit

candles shinning on the

festivities. I truly believe that

remember the English dance

preformed to the music of Sir

Henry Purcell.

There are times

when I am asked; who are

some of your famous

graduates? I recoil a bit at this

remark because notoriety

does not really say much

about any school; it is only a

happenstance. The vast

I was recently pursuing

a magazine, and came

a c ro s s a mo s t

advertisement. The title noted:

“It’s not too late to become a

Doctor”. The advertisement

was put into this national

magazine by one of our

county’s most prestigious

colleges. The copy noted that

the college would help you

obtain a post baccalaureate

medical program certificate so

you could pursue your dream.

The copy went on to certify

That 98% of all candidates,

male and female who

completed the program gain

access to medical school for

further studies. I was intrigued

by this advertisement and

began to think about vast

opportunities our nation

makes available for its citizens.

It is very dramatic to switch

from one career to medicine,

however it is becoming more

and more commonplace for

people to switch careers that

range from baking to becoming

a professional fisherman. I

bring this topic up since it

highlights in many ways what

the essence of a good school

experience can do for their

young charges.

T h e A c a d e m y

primarily prepares our students

for college and a career path.

The curriculum is full bodied

and replete with culture,

adventure, geography, and

worldly experiences. Materials

are selected that permit young

Adelphians to dream and

conjure up thoughts of what

will make them happy and

content. We teach the whole

child not just the academic

areas that will result in a fine

college acceptance and a

parental Thank You. The

Academy instills a sense of

inquiry into the mysteries that

abound in the would, in outer

space, and below the seas. We

are always cognizant of the

speed in which the worlds

changes and its effect upon life

and the planet. We continually

stress the fundamentals and

applications of out academic

subject matter in a framework

that supports civility. The

Faculty and Staff ensure that

learning continues on beyond

the classroom, the textbooks,

the computers, and all the

available technology.

I recently attended an

assembly program in which the

eleventh grade participated.
