Berry softening and colouration are beginning.Pinot Noir at Forreston is a 5-10% Verasion.

Chardonnay Vineyards monitoring this weekhad 15-25% of berries soft.

Vine canopies throughout the district areholding up very well and have passed throughthe hot daytime weather last week well.

12 months ago this week we began our recordbreaking heat-wave. This week coming we areto have much cooler temperatures withmaximums in the low 30s for the AdelaideHills; which is much better ripening weather.

    Light Brown Apple Moth

Light Brown Apple Moth Caterpillars are activein bunches, particularly in tight bunchedvarieties where they are shielded from hightemperatures.

Both LBAM (and Weevils) will damagebunches as they feed and search for moisturein hot and dry conditions. Light Brown AppleMoth also greatly increase the risks of Botrytis

Bunch Rot developing as the fruit ripens.

Above left The summer generation of LBAMcaterpillars protect themselves by hiding insideor between berries.

Below Left Light Brown Apple MothCaterpillars hide in webbing in bunches. Whendisturbed, they wriggle backwards quickly andmay hang by a thread. The varieties Pinot Noir,Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc are mostsusceptible to LBAM damage.

At this point in the season only BTs can beused for LBAM caterpillar control tradenames include Dipel, Delfinetc.

    Weevils

Garden Weevils (top and right) are being found in canopies and Vine Weevil (bottom left) are beingfound in canopies and bunches.

Adult weevils emerge from the soil in mid to late October and are most numerous between November andDecember. Many adults survive until April with some being present through winter. Adult garden weevilsattack foliage, buds and fruit. Grapes can be scarred, while leaves usually have distinctive round holes andragged edges. Adult weevils can weaken grape bunches by ringbarking the stalk so look out for bunchdamage in the coming weeks.
