Overview of “The Employment Situation”
• The April report showed an overall monthly gain of 223,000 jobs – only 5,000 less than expected.
• The unemployment rate was essentially unchanged at 5.4%
• Revisions to prior months:- The February number was revised from
+264,000 to +266,000
- The March number was revised from +126,000 to +85,000
- That makes 39,000 fewer jobs than previously reported
- Over the past 3 months, job gains have averaged 191,000 per month

Unemployment rate in April
• Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 223,000 in April
- Unemployment dipped slightly to 5.4%- The number of long-term unemployed
persons (2.5 million) was little changed in April. These individuals make up 28% of all unemployed persons
- Over the year, the number of unemployed has declined by 888,000 — 0.8%
• Discouraged workers in April was 756,000 (little different from a year earlier)

State & Regional Unemployment – March, 2015
• State and Regional unemployment rates were little changed in March.
- 24 states had unemployment rate decreases from February, while 12 states had increases.
• The Midwest had the lowest regional unemployment rate at 5.0%.
• The West had the highest unemployment rate at 5.9%.
• Significant over-the-year decreases were reported in all four regions: Midwest, West, Northeast and South.
• Among the geographic divisions, all nine showed a notable decline from last year.
