    This is a condition of the adductor tendons. Theadductor tendons attach the thigh bone(femur) to the pelvis and are placed under great stress with running, jumping or kicking.

    Tendinopathy is a general term that meanstendon disorder. It encompasses all types oftendon problems and does not imply aparticular diagnosis or mode of treatmentrequired.

    Frequently this is a degenerative condition (or tendinosis), meaning that the tendonundergoes structural changes related to celldeath and disintegration. This condition candevelop in anyone at any age but is morecommon in athletes particularly those in kickingand running sports.

    If this is left untreated it can develop into a longterm injury which can be highly detrimental toathletic performance.

    Pain and Symptoms

    Risk Factors

    DiagnosisThe diagnosis is usually made from the historyand from clinical testing. Further investigationssuch as x-ray, MRI and ultrasound can beundertaken to confirm the diagnosis and toassess other structures.

    Due to the proximity of this injury to the lower abdominal and genital region a medicalassessment is often required to exclude other possible problems.

    TreatmentPhysiotherapyInitially a period of reduced load is required. Thiscan be achieved by rest from or modificationof running, pivoting, twisting and kicking. Agroin strap may be used throughout therehabilitation period to help unload theaffected tendon. Cross-training in anon-stressful way is usually prescribed tomaintain cardiovascular fitness and thestrength and flexibility of uninjured areas.

    Following this treatment will address the risk factors and you will commence an exerciseprogram. Lower limb strengthening is anessential part of the rehabilitation to helpre-establish neuromuscular control. This willusually be a gym based program that is gradedand progressed as your symptoms allow. A highemphasis will be placed on restoring hip/pelviccontrol and stability.

    Medical There are several promising medicaltreatments available. These need to beprescribed and administered by a MedicalDoctor who has expertise in this area. Someexamples are:

    Recovery TimeRecovery from this condition is variable. It isimportant to realise that tendons take a long

    period of time to recover and some do noteven recover completely. Often theconditoncan take up to 3 6 months toresolve. and then a preventative programwould be implemented to help decrease therisk of future aggravations..If the condition fails to settle over anappropriate period of time and allconservative measures have beenexhausted then referral to a specialist Doctor may be required.

    There are some cases that can beunresponsive to rehabilitation and these mayrequire surgery.
