Audience Pleasures• Audiences are attracted to films due to a set of generic pleasures which motivate

people to watch film. Pete Buckingham and his hypothesis

Through his production of an article he called , ‘Audience: Trends, Profiles and Patterns, Buckingham highlighted key pleasures in which attract audiences and motivate people to watch film. Within his hypothesis he refers to both pleasures, in which he calls ‘Drivers’, and things which put off audiences, ‘Barriers. Below is a chart displaying the different drivers and barriers highlighted by Buckingham.

Meeting the pleasures• Even though our opening title sequence does not met all of the pleasures

completely we did accomplish the majority of them. Below is a table with each pleasure and how we tried to meet it within our film.

Pleasures How we met themPreferred genre As our brief stated that our opening title sequence must be

noir we realised that on its own the genre of our film would not meet audience pleasures. In order to deal with this we included the genre thriller within the film. By doing this fans of noir and thriller would be attracted to our film however we would have to rely on other drivers as genre is quite important. If our film had been an action adventure it may have been more audiences preferred genre.

Preferred actors and producers As we only use two actors within our opening title sequence and they are both not well known within the film industry this particular driver was not met. We tried however to create a professional set of indents which are comparable to famous ones in quality.

Borrowed interest Despite the fact that our film does not contain specific elements from other products we do use borrowed interest of similar things. Since our opening title sequence shares elements with popular crime/thriller productions such as CSI, it could be argued that fans of such productions would be attracted to our product and would meet this pleasure

Pleasures Barriers

Hype and pre-release excitement This was one of the main pleasures in which we did not meet very well. This is due to no advertisement campaign. However, through word of mouth and the internet we have raised awareness about our product.

Narrative hook Unlike some of the other pleasures I feel we met this one very well due to the narrative we decided for our opening title sequence. The fact that we hint about the kind of case the antihero is dealing with produces a very good incentive for the audience to keep watching. Furthermore the fact that we don't reveal the anti heroes face at all creates mystery and enigma.

Unexpected twist Our opening title sequence does not include a narrative twist however I personally feel that the ending of the sequence strikingly contrasts with the rest. The change between a static image and live action may pose as a twist to some and the fact that we are transported back in time may be unexpected for some members of the audience.
