The much-antici- pated announcement identi- fies 25 individuals or small working groups who are most influencing the current course of world events in four catego- Will Allen named to Time 100: The World’s Most Influential People “genius grants.” He is also a member of the Clinton Global Initiative, an organization of leaders and thinkers founded by Bill and Hillary Clinton to address global challenges including hunger and malnu- trition. In February, First Lady Michelle Obama invited Allen to the White House to speak to the nation at the launch of her “Let’s Move!” initiative to reverse childhood obesity in America. Within hours of the an- nouncement that Will Al- len had been named to the 2010 Time 100 World’s Most Influential People, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett made an executive decision: He would award Allen the Key to the City. For Barrett, this was an occasion considerably more unusual than, say, the use of his veto power. It was the first time in his six years as mayor that he has awarded anyone the Key. The honor, which dates back to the times of medieval walled cities, is now a sym- bolic gesture, but certainly not without meaning. The bestowal of the key suggests the recipient is worthy of the highest trust and respect due any citizen. The plaque an- nouncing it reads: “The Key to the City of Milwaukee, pre- sented to Will Allen of Grow- ing Power Inc., in honor of the distinguished recognition of being named one of Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influen- tial People. Bell) Widespread use of lead- based paint in older housing throughout Wisconsin has poisoned more than 46,000 Wisconsin children since 1996. More than 1,000 Wis- consin kids are reported each year with newly diagnosed lead-poisoning. Although the use of lead in house paints was prohibited in 1978, high lead levels remain in the paint of many homes, particularly those built before 1950. The changes will help to prevent lead poisoning, which creates very serious medi- cal and behavioral problems. Lead exposure is a strong predictor of school disciplinary prob- lems, delinquency and adult criminal behavior. It can also be fatal. Children are most com- monly poisoned by lead from lead-based paint dust or chips created by weathering or renovation in older homes. Tragically, some children are poisoned when contractors or homeowners try to remove old paint without using safe methods. A new federal and state rule went into effect this month to make sure that workers who disturb painted surfaces in older homes don’t contami- nate homes with dangerous lead dust. All contractors must now be trained and certified in lead-safe renova- tion, and adopt lead-safe work practices when working in older buildings. This rule applies to renovation projects that disturb paint in residential properties and child-occupied facilities, including child care facilities and schools, built before 1978. The Department of Health Services has reached out vigorously to Wisconsin ’s many contractors to explain the changes and has worked closely with contractor groups such as the Wisconsin Builder’s Association and the ries: Leaders, Heroes, Artists and Thinkers. Allen was named in the area of Heroes. Allen was identified for his powerful ad- vocacy for food security and food justice for all. Through his work promoting urban agriculture, Allen has called attention to the widespread existence of “food deserts” in cities across America, where whole communities lack ac- cess to fresh, nutritious and affordable foods. The solu- tions Allen has proposed and argued for in the 18 years since his founding of Grow- ing Power, a non-profit urban farm and training center in Milwaukee, include are turn to localized food systems and teaching communities where good food is unaffordable to grow it themselves. “We have seen the results of our reliance on the industri- alized, commoditized food- system we have built since the middle of the last century: A rapidly rising rate of obesity in generation after genera- tion, leading to alarming rates of diabetes and heart dis- ease, so that for the first time in America, despite all our advances in medicine, our life expectancy is falling,” Allen said. “Finally, we are learning that treating illness is much less effective than preventing illness by promoting health; and that good food is the best and most fundamental pre- ventive medicine of all. “Polls now show that 86 percent of Americans want good food, real food; fresh, locally grown food that is safe and free of chemicals and genetic modi- fications. But there is simply not enough good food being grown for all those who want and need it. I am simply trying to help change that.” Driving home the point that the Good Food Revolu- tion, as Allen has declared it, is no longer a fad but a fact, Time also named author and food advocate Michael Pollan (“The Omnivore’s Dilemma”) to its list, as well as others such as Valentin Abe, who has successfully introduced tilapia farming to a depleted lake in Haiti. Time magazine created its first 100 list in 1999, when it named the most influential people of the 20th Century. In 2004, the maga- zine started the annual list, stressing that the people it names are not necessarily the most public, popular or pow- erful, but often are the most innovative or inspirational and the most apt to effect change. Sincetakingofficein2003,GovernorDoylehastakenmajorstepstoimproveeducationinWisconsin.Inhisfirstterm,theGovernorpro-tectedschoolsfromaRepub-lican-ledStateLegislature’sattempttoslasheducationfundingby$400million–acutthatwouldhavedevastatedourschoolsandourstudents.TheGovernorincreasedfundingforsmallclasssizes,increasedfundingforspe-cialeducation,expandedschoolbreakfastprograms,expanded4-yearoldkinder-gartenprogramsandinvestedinearlychildhoodeducation.GovernorDoylealsocreatedtheWisconsinCovenant,apathwaytohighereducationforeveryhardworkingWiscon-sinstudent.

MorethanadozenyouthfromtheSocialDevelopmentCommission’sYouthandFamilyDevelopmentProgram(YFDP)havegottenafirst-handlookathighereducation. 13youthfromtheSDCprogramrecentlytouredfiveuniversitycampusesinIndianaandTennessee.TheschoolsvisitedincludedtheUniversityofIndianapolis,Spaulding,MiddleTennessee,VanderbiltandTennesseeState.Staffaccompanyingtheyouthonthe2010CollegeTournotedthatthestudentsgainedalotofvaluableinformationonhighereduca-tionincluding,forexample,howoneschooloffersaprogramthatallowsenrolledstudentstograduatedebt-free. Anyonecanwalkdownthestreetsofoldandseea“church”almostoneverycor-ner.WhenIwalk,rightawayIwonderisthisthepictureJesuswastryingtopaint?Thentherearesomanymegachurchesthatarerunbythe“board”andnottheOrdainedPastor,whichfailstomeettheneedsofthecommunityandeventhepastorhimselfisnotledbyGod,insomecasestheir“truths”arenotevenscripturallybased. Manyofthe“churches”whoconfessJesusarenotpaintingapictureofJesusbe-ingthehead.Tothepoorandshut-inthereisnoevidenceofpowerforthemtosee,sotheyask“whydotheyneedtogotochurch?”Soinsteadtheyusethechurchforhandouts.Manyofour“churches”aretuckedawayinthecornersofbuildingsandboardmem-bers,insteadofwalkingthestreetshealing,prophesying,feedingthepoor,andshelter-ingthem.Nowpleasedonotgetmewrong,wehavemanygreatoutsideorganizationsthathelpbyusingalltheirresourc-esforourpeople.However,forthe“churches”whereis

Myproblemisnotwiththe“churches,”Godwilljudgeeachofthem.Myproblemis,ifthereisa“church”oneverycornerandwehavemega“churches”andtheycallonthenameofJesus,thenwithinthose“churches”whereisthepowerofJesustohelpourpeoplewhoarestrug-gling?WhereistheexampleofJesus?Notjustthepreach-ingof,butalsotheexampleofJesus,whereisit?ThepowerwheredeathisfacedrightinourbackyardandthemajorityofChristiansrunfromthem.TheseChristiansrunfromthembecausetheythinktheyarenowbetterthanthosefromwheretheyoncecame. Themajorityofchurchesnowadaysreallydonotcareaboutanyone;exceptthosewhocanpassthetestofmembership.What“churches”arelookingfornowadaysismoney,status,andkeepingupwiththe“Joneses”whileitseemstheyarepayingtheirdues--notrealizingtheyarenotholdingtothestandardofJesusbecausetheypaidtheirdueswithmoney.Whoisfeedingthethou-sands,healingthethousands,andbuildingdisciplesbythethousands?Instead,wehave“churches”oneverycornerwithnopower.Wehavemega

“churches”whereJesusistoohightoreach,andwehaveourpeoplewithnohopeofafuture,andfallingwithinthesystemofagovernmentthatdoesn’tcareforthemanyway. TogiveyouanexampleofwhatIamtalkingabout:Ihaveseenacouplewalkintoa“church”andtoldthatthis“church”mightnotbeforthem--isthisthepictureJesuswastryingtopaint?ThisisachurchbuiltwiththeideathatwhattheyaredoingisofGod’sword.MyJesusneverturnedawayanyone;sohowisit,“churches”couldpickandchoosethepeoplewhostay?Andthen,whileleach-ingmoneyfromthemwhodostay,the“church”leavestheirmembersnotevenknowingthebasicsofthe10com-mandmentsandofjudgments,letalonetheknowledgeoftheKingdomofGod,whichinturnshowsnopowerwithinthemajorityofourChristianbrothersandsistersleavingtheoutsiderslookingatourbrothersandsistersasbeingpowerlessandpimpedbythe“church.” Matthew18:5-6(KJV)5Andwhososhallreceiveonesuchlittlechildinmynamere-ceivethme.6Butwhososhalloffendoneoftheselittleoneswhichbelieveinme,itwerebetterforhimthatamillstonewerehangedabouthisneck,andthatheweredrownedin

thedepthofthesea. Thequestionis,howmany“churches”offendourpeople?Gettingthemsavedisonething,butwithouttheunderstandingofthejudg-mentthatwillcomeisanother.TooffendthechildrenofGodistosayyouareChristiansbutwithnopower,andtheway“churches”aresetupyouoffendthosewhowanttobelieveandtheyreceivenospiritualhealingwhichbringsjudgmentuntothosechurch-es. Whiletherearethosewhoaresupposedtobe,theimageofJesus,theyshowusapictureofSatanandnotevenknowit.Tothefollowersofthosewhoarewithinthose

“churches”andwhoknowitisnotbeingscripturallyrun,they’regoingalongjusttogetalongwhileourpeoplearestillhungryandindeathwhichbringsjudgmentuntoevery-one. Thetimehascomeforchangeandtheknowledgemustbetaughttothosewhoaretiredofplayingchurch.IfGodweretosendJesusrightnow,Ican’ttellyouhowsomanypeoplewillcometoJesusconfessingtoHimhowHeisLord.IseesoclearlythatJesuswillsaytothem,Iknowyounot.Withoutknow-ing,itisthepreacherwhoistoteachyouthetruthandiftheydon’tteachyouthetruththenyoucouldbejudged.Yesthatisright.Jesussaves,buttherestillisajudgmentontoyou. Ihavealectureforalltocomeandsitintolearnwhatthetruthis.Ihavecometounderstandthatslaveryisnotaphysicalstate,butamentalstate.AstheIsraelites

wereleavingEgypt-slaverytofreedom-eventhoughthelocationchanged,theywerestillholdingontotheirslaverymentality--tothatwhichkeptthemfrombeingfree.There-fore,torenewone’smindiskeytofreedom. ThemisconceptionistobelievethatreligionwillsaveyoufromSatan.Satandoesnotcareaboutreligion.Hewillsteal,kill,anddestroyanyonewholetshim.So,thebattleisstillaboutfreeingpeople’smindsinhowtobattleoffSatanwhowantstokeepev-eryoneinslavery,awayfromknowingwhotheyareinGod. There’snoreasonwhyMHSshouldn’tbeallowedtocontinuetooperateasaBadgerCareprovider,andtheirservicesaredesperatelyneededinMilwaukee.Gov-ernorDoyleandDepartmentofHealthServicesSecretaryKarenTimberlakeshouldreexaminethecontractsthatwereawarded,anddowhat’sinthebestinterestofMilwau-keeresidents.

Inrecentdaysanenor-mousdiscussionhastakenformwithinmanyAmeri-canquarters,asDr.HenryLouisGateshasonceagainweighedinonthequestionofreparationsforAfricanAmeri-cans. TheHarvardProfessor’smostrecentarticleentitled,“EndingtheSlaveryBlameGame”,inwhichGatespro-ducesinformationregardingthoseAfricannationswhichactivelyaidedEuropeanslavemerchantsduringtheTrans-AtlanticSlaveTradehasfunctionedtonotonlybroadenthelensinwhichthistragiceventmaybeviewed,buthasalsoservedtoexplainthecomplexityinwhichculpabilitymaybeassessed.
