A bfg^,boy.,Tsi2 Diahne wants to tell you of particular blessings she received that day. I want to thank you all for your specific prayers for the baby and me. The Lord truly answered those petitions. I was checked in the hospital at 7:00 a.m. to begin injections for induced labor, seeing that lazy Nathan was six teen days late. The injections didn't do the job but the peace I had so earnestly prayed for, was with me all day. To pass time, in the labor room, my nurse (who only spoke Spanish) and I sang hymns. We knew the same tunes, so she sang in Spanish and I in English, until some other nurses joined us and brought some Spanish songbooks -- then I could sing in Spanish too. By the way, I knoiv it was the Lord who helped me communicate with those Puerto Rican nurses. The words I needed in Spanish always seemed to be there - - words I thought I'd forgotten. After praising God in song, we had prayer - - in Spanish - - and then my doctor (who was just wonderful) came to quote, *Get this show on the road." It was a difficult forceps delivery, but again God was overseeing and Nathan just had a few head bruises, which have disappeared already. What a beautiful, beautiful gift from above - - LIFE! Please pray that the Holy Spirit will guide us to be good Christian parents. We pray that Nathan will always be able to see God's love shining in and through us. Our work here in Puerto Rico is a real challenge. Only with the Lord's help and the Holy Spirit's guidance, can we hope to see lives won to Christ. The Roman Catholic traditions are so strongly impressed on the youth, but the young people we've talked with, are searching the scriptures for their answers, for which we can praise the Lord. After they become Christians, they know they can't share this with their parents immediately. They can only pray that in time they will be able to win their families to Christ. They need Christian fellowship so desperately and often have to sneak from home to get it. Then come the many questions and frustrations - - "I've been taught this all my life, but the Bible says this. . ." Please pray for these young people that they might receive the necessary strength from the Word. _ _ Another influence that plays a strong part in the lives of Puerto Ricans is that of Spiritualism. There was a program on TV and also an article in the newspaper, which pointed out that "while most Puerto Ricans are ostensibly Roman Catholics, or Protestants, the vast majority are strongly influenced by spiritualism." Puerto Rican spiritualism takes two basic forms - - that of "the cult of the water spirits" and "the cult of the spirits of the air." Special herbs, oils, candles, powders, bells, flowers, incense and other necessary trappings of spiritualism can be readily bought in any "Bontanica" (herb or flower stores). There is so much to learn about Puerto Ricans so that we might better understand how to present the Gospel to them. We are still working hard at Spanish too, and since the end of November, we have had a private tutor, Nildy, and our classes are every day for two hours. Our Tutor is a Puerto Rican girl and a lovely new Christian. One Sunday, after worship services, we all went to the beach and Nildy was baptized. She was so happy and radiant. She had even brought beans and rice for all of us for lunch. We want you to know we survived the Christmas season -- didn't think we would there for a while. The Puerto Ricans really celebrate - - from November until the middle of January, in fact. We didn't get much sleep because of all the "asalto" parties. All the houses in our urbanization are about eight feet apart, so when a party started (they begin at 2:00 a.m.) even three or four blocks away, we got to enjoy (?) the chanting, clapping, drums, maracas, and guitars, till dawn. Now it's the sugar cane season and cane is all over the streets - - dropped by the hugh cane trucks. We have a big field at the end of our street and when they bum it, it sounds like a horrible hail storm. The,pJlane-ride from San Juan (on our Prinair Puddle-Jumper) shook them up a bit, but after a good night's sleep, they recovered and are anxious to get settled and begin working. July, 1973

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

God is so very wonderful! We praise His name for all the blessings that have been given us these past months. It's such a joy to tell others about the wonderful name of Jesus. We see so clearly the leading of the Holy Spirit -guiding us to homes where the people are responsive to His Word; convicting these souls of their need for Christ;guiding also as we teach.

We've had many opportunities already, to witness, by offering a free five part Bible correspondence course tothose we call on. Many people seem eager to learn more about the Bible. In fact, fifty courses were given in thefirst two and a half weeks. So one hundred more had to be ordered. Praise the Lord! These present opportunitiesto get in the people's homes, to teach them about Christ. We've learned not to take anything for granted too. Onelady who took a course was so proud, that after three weeks she had taught herself how to look up the scripturereferences. (But she hadn't done it right after all.) So you can see Puerto Ricans need much teaching. We areteaching several families every week, with only the Bible as our text book.

We'd like you to pray for the new Christians in Mayaguez and pray also for the people we are teaching and forthose taking the correspondence course. Also pray that we might learn Spanish more quickly. Our current teacher,Alba Hernandez, is the wife of the newest Christian in Mayaguez. She said, ''You teach us the Bible and I'll teachyou Spanish, so you can teach our Spanish friends about the Bible." We feel sure Alba will soon accept Christ asher Savior, too. Nelson Hernandez is finding many prospects for the Lord, himself.

It was an especially happy time for us to seeour sixteen year old neighbor boy, Luis Lugo, buried with Christ in baptism. He said when hecame up out of the water, "Me Feliz!" That isSpanglish (mixture of Spanish and English) for"I'm very happy." If you saw his face, youwouldn't doubt that at all. His spiritual growthin just three weeks has been phenomenal. Westudy together most every day, with the Spanishdictionary close at hand, of course.

We had a very nice surprise for Easter - avisit from Terry's folks. Nathan, of course, loved being spoiled and the rest of us got caughtup on all of the latest family news. They hadrather an exciting time getting here, due to theEastern strike.

    ^^5

In Puerto Rico, the on Good Fridayrather than Easter Sunday. Vicri/es Sai/fu {GoodFriday) is a day of total mourning for all Puerto Luis Lugo's Baptism. "See here is water; What doth hinderRicans. Women and young girls dressed in tradi- ^ l l x- jo" a ^ o

, , , r N j me to be baptized? Acts 8:36tional clothes ot "//o''(mourning) and there wereseveral regular funeral processions around town(even one in our urbanization). The funeral procession consists of a glass enclosed coffin containing a life sizestatue of the crucified Christ. This is carried by ten or twelve men on their shoulders. Also in the procession wasa statue of the sorrowing mother. This is Mary, dressed in black, who was also carried on the shoulders of a groupof men. There was also the solemn chanting of the Rosary, while they marched. Pray that we can tell the PuertoRican about a "living" Savior.

The island is having trouble with the power supply, so quite frequently we have no electricity. Just once sofar, did we have to wash diapers by hand. We also thank the Lord for sterno (to heat bottles ) or we would havehad one unhappy, hungry baby. By the way, the hurricane season is officially opened.

Due to the upward spiral of inflation, Terry is trying his hand at gardening. Within four days after planting theseeds, we had nice sturdy plants. In Puerto Rico anyone can be a gardener. We are trying to go "native" and reallyare getting to enjoy rice and beans, chicken and rice, etc. We've had a lot of mangoes given to us so Terry islearning to enjoy them too. Pineapples are fifteen cents apiece at the vendors along the highways. By the way, those mangoes cost us S25 in doctor bills. Dianne got mango poisoning.

.DXcJL^utl Sarah Robisoh, frortuthe International Christian University, in San Juan, were able to spend a week-endwith us. which we"enjoyed so much'r--Lany_Greea, missionary in Fajardo, visited yesterday. It's really encouragingand fun to share experiences with other missionaries.

Several have asked for s/n-c/iic prayer requests and we're only too happy to answer that request.1. Pray for the Garrets. Gidleys. and Addlemans. as we endeavor to serve Christ in Puerto Rico.2. Pray for Luis Lugo, that he may continue to grow in the faith.3. Pray for the Nelson Hernandez family, that they may understand those "Wonderful Words of Life."4. Pray that Alba Hernandez will soon see her need to obey the Lord.5. Pray for the Lopez family, the Atkin family, the King family and the Ruiz lamily, that through studying the Word,

they might see their need for Christ.6. Pray for Tin and Helen Mo that they may grow in the Lord.

  • Thank you for your faithful prayer and financial support. We love you all.

    In Christ's Service,

    Terry, Dianne and Nathan

    P. S. A Note From Nathan:

Already, I have the last word. (Ha!) I just wanted to say "Hi", too, and letyou know I'm growing bigger and stronger every day. 1 like to squeal and laughand everyone thinks it's cute - except in church (?). I'm going to meet all my Igreat-grandparents this month. Mommie and me are going to Pittsburgh, with 'Grandma and Grandpa Fulmer. It sure will be fun - being spoiled!

    Nathan at 9 weeks.

DR. AND MRS. NEAL K. CLAPP, P.O. BOX 88, CLINTON. TENN. 37716

    November, 1973

    Dear Christian Friends,

    >./y > km

We are just reading the last newsletter that we sent you and can*t believe how much has happened since then. So manyprayers have been answered because of your faithful prayer support. First of all, there are now one hundred and forty-fourfamilies (as of Sept. 26) taking the correspondence course. Even people we've never met are writing and requestingcourses. We truly praise the Lord for this avenue of witness. It keeps us busy, ordering more courses.

John and I are still studying weekly in the Hernandex home and are so happy to tell you, Alba accepted Christ as herSaviour also.

/^ Last time we also asked you to pray for the Lopez family. Since that time Fernando Sr. and Elsie obeyed their Lord inChristian baptism. A week later their twenty-one year old daughter, Carmen, did also. In August, Fernando Jr. (20) wasbaptised into Christ, making their family one in the Lord. Carmen and Elsie help Mary and Dianne when they need helpteaching Sunday School lessons. Teaching in Spanish and English isn't too hard, they tell me, until the children askquestions. John and I teach in the Lopez home weekly, too.

We also teach weekly in the homes of five other families. Please keep them in your prayers.1. The Quintona family2. The Riveras (we think they will be moving back to the States soon)3. Mr. and Mrs. Alacan (Esther was the first one to complete all five lessons of the Bible Correspondence

course)4. Pierre Vivoni and his wife5. Mrs. Vasallo

Alba is our Spanish teacher and is really on fire for theLord. She even arranged a Christian Conference at the Uni- -versity of Puerto Rico for us. We hope to have another onesoon. Alba brings a friend of hers-Alma-to services on Sun-day. Alma needs our prayers also. She has so many familyprobelms, which are a real burden on her heart. Her mother isa spiritualist.

We are sorry to report that Jim and Ruth Garrett and the/ kids left for the states in July. We miss them so much. Jim

is now ministering to the Christian Church in Caldwell, Ohio.

We hope soon to move Sunday services to Sultana Urbanizations' recreation center. Our application is in but they arehaving trouble getting the government to pay for chairs andtables. (Ha)

The Lord's Church here in Mayaguez has a missionaryj project. We are helping support a native evangelist in Nigeria,f Africa, I. E. Udoh has established many churches in Nigeria

and the Cameroons. We also hope to buy a mimeograph machine soon to save on printing costs and to duplicate lessonsand also publish a Christian newspaper in Spanish fot the community of Mayaguez. Fernando Lopez Sr. is treasurer.

Fernando and Elsie LopezNew Brother and Sister In Christ

In August, we had a wonderful, but much too short visit with BettyKnox, a good friend of Dianne's from her homechurch in Duquesne, Penna. The Prinair flight from San Juan scared her to death but she recovered.

Luis continues to stop in every day after school for a cookie and to tell us about his opportunities to witness for theLord. And of course he takes out time to play with Nathan.

We still spend our mornings calling door to door and we hear so many times, *We're Catholics so we don't read ourBibles'. An unbelievable admission. One day we knocked on closed doors all the way down one street, thinking we hadbeen knocking on the frontdoors and wondering why NO ONE was home. These new fangled double houses! Sometimeswe feel like the Pied Piper - a string of little kids following us down the streets.

Dianne just worked up a cassett tape program and slides, of the work here in Mayaguez. If you would like to hearit and see the current slides or be able to present it to your Sunday School class or Ladies group, please let the Clappsknow. It is an half hour tape 35 slides

We appreciate so very, very much your prayers, letters and financial support. Without you, we couldn't do our smallpart in letting the whole world know about cur Lord. Thank you for loving Puerto Ricans. Our love to each of you throughChrist our Saviour.

  • apin everyone! Guess what, I almost had a pet lizard. It was over my crib and1^^^ interested for the longest time. Mommy had to go and scare him, with her scream.

^ wonder if she'll ever get used to all these neat tropical creatures. I have four teeth now(a^l the better to eat everything I can get my hands on - even my own hands, ouch!) and willbe crawling everywhere when you get this letter. I just had to take advantage of my *last

jIB word' and give you a progress report. ] go with Mommy to Sunday School class, but I don'tunderstand that funny language so most of the time I go to sleep. 'Da-Da and Ma-Ma' areuiore my style. You should see the big smiles Daddy and Mommy get when they get aletter from one of you, so please write to us, okay? Bye-Bye for now.

thank God for each and every one who has been steadfast in prayer and in theirgiving to the work in Mayaguez. We feel we have the 'Best Army' of Christians any missioncould ask for. Please just be patient with us as forwarding agents. Clinton is experiencing

millHBIIHlllll^^H growing pains and is requiring much of our time. Alocal insurance agent's month-old swimming pool was used as our baptistry for two baptisms last Lord's Day. A prime lot forNathan A eman future building was purchased a month ago. This still does not ease the immediate problem

of where to put everyone Sunday and Wednesday evening in our home. If you stop for a visitbring your own pillow to siton! We hope to see many of you in Oklahoma City during the Missionary Convention. Good News Mission will have a displayareaplease stop by the display for a visit.

The slides and cassette are available for the work in Mayaguez. We will try to be available to present these if youwould like to have them. However, if you have someone who would be willing to make the presentation for usthis would bea mission endeavor for your congregation because it would be helping us with the work in Clinton by allowing us to remainhere on weekends which is very much needed at this time. Let us know your needs and questions. God bless each andevery one of you.
