Objectives/Standards 5 th Grade Math: Number Sense: Adding and Subtracting Fractions with like and unlike denominators Data/Graphing: Coordinates and points 5 th Grade Social Studies: Latitude and Longitude 5 th Grade Science: Earth’s magnetism 2. Background Knowledge a. Students must have been introduced to adding and subtracting fractions with like and unlike denominators b. Students must be familiar with Mixed Fractions c. Students must understand the concept of Simplifying Fractions d. Students must understand the concept of Equivalent Fractions e. Students must understand Longitude and Latitude f. Students must know that there are 360 degrees in a circle and g. Students must know how a compass works 3. In the Field a. Students will be given 6 Waypoints b. Each team will be given a dierent Waypoint c. Students will have to answer the Fraction problems in the containers they find at the Waypoints correctly in order to go to the next point

1. Objectives/Standards

5th Grade Math:

Number Sense: Adding and Subtracting Fractions with like and unlike denominators

Data/Graphing: Coordinates and points

5th Grade Social Studies:

Latitude and Longitude

5th Grade Science:

Earth’s magnetism

2. Background Knowledge

a. Students must have been introduced to adding and subtracting fractions with like and unlike denominators

b. Students must be familiar with Mixed Fractions

c. Students must understand the concept of Simplifying Fractions

d. Students must understand the concept of Equivalent Fractions

e. Students must understand Longitude and Latitude

f. Students must know that there are 360 degrees in a circle and

g. Students must know how a compass works

3. In the Field

a. Students will be given 6 Waypoints

b. Each team will be given a different Waypoint

c. Students will have to answer the Fraction problems in the containers they find at the Waypoints correctly in order to go to the next point

4. Back in the Classroom

a. Once students have completed the mission, they will go back to the classroom to plot the data on a graph

b. Students will connect the dots to form a closed 6-sided figure (Hexagon)

5. Preparation/Materials

a. Find 6 Waypoints and get the GPS’s ready

b. 6 Containers

c. 6 Clues

d. Clipboards for each team

e. Field Worksheets

f. Graphing paper

a. No Clue Sheet is necessary for this lesson

b. A total of 6 clues will be needed

c. Students will be place in Groups of 2s

d. No field worksheet is necessary for this lesson

7. Post-discussion/Assessment
