Adaptation to climate change in Latin America: working towards transformational adaptation COP 20, Hilton Miraflores Hotel - Lima, Peru December 8, 2014, 18:00 21:30h OUTLINE Latin America and the Caribbean is a key region in the global fight against climate change. The region’s unique cultural and biological diversity play a strategic role in guaranteeing community resilience and the provision of global environmental services, such as food, energy, water, and climate stability. Simultaneously, as a rapidly developing region, infrastructure investment and economic growth offer a window of opportunity for timely, climate resilient investment that can promote adaptation and reduce GHG emissions, while promoting inclusive, sustainable development. In this context, and responding to IPCC’s call (2014) for the application of an integrated risk management approach and work towards transformational adaptation, the Secretariat of Strategic Affairs of the Brazilian Presidency (SAE/PR) and Fundación Avina are convening a group of experts, decision- makers and practitioners to share their perspectives and debate on the futuristic vision for incremental and transformational adaptation in Latin America. The discussion will focus on opportunities and challenges of acting on adaptation as a means to achieve climate compatible national development. Building on the experience of several national and sub national stakeholders undertaking adaptation initiatives on the ground, the event will focus on: i) Understanding the implications of climate change for Latin America and what it requires in terms of adaptation policy and practice; 2) Analyzing the science- policy interface, especially when considering climate information in the development of infrastructure in Latin America; 3) Sharing key advancements in terms of strategies towards integrating adaptation into the development agenda. Based on this information, the event will provide a platform for the participants to examine opportunities for enhanced cooperation on adaptation between LA countries.

COP 20, Hilton Miraflores Hotel - Lima, Peru

OUTLINE

Latin America and the Caribbean is a key region in the global fight against

climate change. The region’s unique cultural and biological diversity play a

strategic role in guaranteeing community resilience and the provision of global

environmental services, such as food, energy, water, and climate stability.

Simultaneously, as a rapidly developing region, infrastructure investment and

economic growth offer a window of opportunity for timely, climate resilient

investment that can promote adaptation and reduce GHG emissions, while

promoting inclusive, sustainable development.

In this context, and responding to IPCC’s call (2014) for the application of an

integrated risk management approach and work towards transformational

adaptation, the Secretariat of Strategic Affairs of the Brazilian Presidency

(SAE/PR) and Fundación Avina are convening a group of experts, decision-

makers and practitioners to share their perspectives and debate on the

futuristic vision for incremental and transformational adaptation in Latin

America. The discussion will focus on opportunities and challenges of acting on

adaptation as a means to achieve climate compatible national development.

Building on the experience of several national and sub national stakeholders

undertaking adaptation initiatives on the ground, the event will focus on: i)

Understanding the implications of climate change for Latin America and what

it requires in terms of adaptation policy and practice; 2) Analyzing the science-

policy interface, especially when considering climate information in the

development of infrastructure in Latin America; 3) Sharing key advancements in

terms of strategies towards integrating adaptation into the development

agenda. Based on this information, the event will provide a platform for the

participants to examine opportunities for enhanced cooperation on

adaptation between LA countries.
