Things You Might want to Know about Travel to Costa Rica

Passport-Citizens of the U.S. and Canada may enter Costa Rica with a valid passport. Costa Rican law requires your passport be valid for at least 90 days after the date you enter the country. You can check with your airline or travel agent for more information. You are required to carry your passport with you at all times. If you are stopped by officials, a photocopy with your photo, passport number and entry stamp will usually suffice and is recommended.

Shots - No shots or vaccinations are needed for visits to Costa Rica.

Airport - To attend this seminar, you will need to come into the Juan Santamaria International Airport in San Jose (SJO). There are several airlines with regular flights to this airport. Remember you will need to let the Resort know your flight information for transportation from the airport to the Resort.

Once you disembark from your flight, you will go through Immigration (Immigración). Once through Immigration, you will see someone holding a sign saying “Pura Vida Villas” and your last name. This person will give you a VIP sticker to put on your clothing which will facilitate your progress through the rest of the airport. Next you will go to the baggage claim area to get your luggage and then to Customs (Aduana) where your bags will be screened. Once through Customs, you will exit the airport building. Look for the driver who will be holding a sign saying “Pura Vida” and your last name. From the airport it is only about a 20-minute drive to the Resort.

AirportDepartureTax- You will need $26 to pay the non-residency departure tax when you are leaving Costa Rica. Cash, Visa or MasterCard is accepted.

Currency - You may use U.S. Dollars, Colones (Costa Rican currency) and traveler’s checks at the Resort and most stores, restaurants, tour companies, etc. However, if you wish to exchange Dollars for Colones, you may do so in small amounts at the Resort or go to any local bank. There is no ATM at the Resort, but you can find them in nearby Alajuela.

ClothingandTravelAccessories- (Temperature range from 70-80° with cool evenings) You will need to bring a hat, bath-ing suit, shorts, light weight pants, sweater/sweatshirt for cool evenings, poncho or other raingear, walking or hiking boots, sneakers and sandals. If you plan to go white-water rafting, you need shorts and sandals or shoes that you don’t mind getting wet and that will not come off in the water. You may also want to bring a flashlight, alarm clock, sunscreen, beach towel, back pack, insect repellent, toiletries, hair dryer (optional).

TelephoneandComputer - Check with your phone service provider regarding service in Costa Rica. If you do bring a phone, you should leave it “off” so you are not charged the international rate for any calls you receive-even if you don’t answer. You can arrange to make intenational calls through the Resort front desk. WiFi is available in the Guest Lounge or you can use a Resort computer for a small fee.

FoodandWater - Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included in your tuition. The Resort is famous for its great vegetarian buffet with fish or chicken options. The water at the Resort is safe to drink and water quality standards throughout Costa Rica are generally quite high.
