Our Acute services

Priory has a nationwide network of acute support

for the NHS, oering 24 hours a day, 7 days a week

assistance in times of emergencies, to support

individuals whenever needed. Our safe, secure and

contained hospitals oer supportive and caring

environments for a wide range of patients.

We focus on family and carer interaction, and

collaboration with community teams to support

successful discharge plans and a smooth transition

back into existing community services, or to an

individual’s home where possible.

Our intensive care services have been developed over 20 years and are adept at dealing with patients in a severe phase of illness, who cannot be managed on an acute unit. Our sta teams have extensive experience in managing high levels of disturbance, allowing the units to admit from a variety of settings including other PICUs.

Priory's experience of supporting people with complex needs and challenging behaviours, along with co-existing issues (such as substance misuse), puts our services at the forefront of specialised intensive care.

Our PICUs meet the Department of Health’s National Minimum Standards for ‘General Adult Services in Psychiatric Intensive Care Units’.

Our Acute services

• We work closely with referring Trusts to achieve minimum lengths of stay, and are able to provide an extension to NHS care pathways during times of fluctuating demand

• Priory works collaboratively with discharge teams to ensure a smooth transition back into existing community services, or to an individual’s home where possible. This includes the opportunity to attend ward rounds and discuss patient care with the MDT

• We have the capability across our network to utilise our breadth of services to support a full care pathway, providing continuity of care and the minimum disruption to the treatment programme

What is Priory’s approach?

Page 6: Acute and Psychiatric Intensive Care Services - Priory Group · Acute services Spotlight on: The Priory Hospital Roehampton, East Wing The Priory Hospital Roehampton specialises in

Our PICU services

Our model of care is designed to meet the needs of those

with behaviours that challenge. Patients may present with

a high level of acuity, and so require a safe and

therapeutic environment to manage their level of risk, and

safely yet swiftly start them on their road to recovery.

Priory’s individual packages of care for those presenting

with the highest levels of acuity focus on:

• Intensive, multidisciplinary, therapeutic programmes aimed at delivering evidenced-based interventions in order to rapidly reduce acute symptoms

• Promoting self-management and recovery

• An initial physical health screen and management

• Ensuring a short length of stay, prior to transfer to a less restrictive environment

• Out-of-hours rapid admission (often paper-based) for emergency and urgent assessment, seven days a week

As part of our Acute and PICU services, discharge planning commences upon arrival. Our primary objective is to deliver fast and eective improvements to our patients’ mental health, along with a minimum length of stay. On admission our services:

• Identify physical care needs

• Engage with family and carers to listen to their needs

• Provide relevant information to families and carers

• Maintain close contact with bed managers and community sta

• Consider input required from social, advocacy and other agencies

The team ensures patients are always

involved:

Patient 2015

Thank you for your excellent care during my recent short admission. I found the nursing sta very friendly and it was easy to communicate my needs to them. I also felt that the rights and dignity of patients were respected at all times. The holistic approach to recovery which was evident from the varied activities available and pleasant surroundings is very progressive in comparison to the conditions I have experienced in other hospitals.
