The site is on the tip of the Haukaas area and is one the only places of Haukaas that faces the west. There is a small bay in the contour of the coast, submerged between two shallow cliffs. There are trees on top of the cliffs, creating an interesting ambient overlooking the water and the nearby bridge crossing the fjord. There is potential for a secluded access to the water, mostly for swimmers or campers in the warmer months. It is somewhat distanced from urban areas, the closest being a factory/storage building to the north. There is however no visual access point to the cliffs, though one may assume that a road could be drawn from the housing developments to the south of area.

The space described is a small bay to the north of the Haukaas area, near the houses of Nesjavegen. It is a small beach, whose coast outline curves from the north creating a small bay directed north-west. In the bay there is visible easy access to the water, which presumably the inhabitants of nearby houses use. On the side of the bay looking north-east, there are shadows in the water indicating rocks which create interesting ambients that change with the tide. The shoreline is covered with trees, creating interesting ambients for pastime in the summer. There is visible road access both from the Nesjavegen area as well as the storage buildings on Hykjelia.

The site described is an elongated clearing in the forest above Hylkje area. The clearing’s obvious purpose is for the unobstructed path of the electricity wires going over the hill. The clearing is quite interesting as it is approximately 60 metres long from north-east to south-west while only about 6 metres wide. There is an exit to the clearing to the top of the hill where the forest ends, while it drastically narrows downhill. There is no visual access to the site as it is far away from urban areas but it presumably does have very interesting views across the fjord.

The space described is a small lake on top of the hill to the south of the Haukass area. It is probably not as popular with the inhabitants of the area as the bigger lakes to the south but maybe more secluded. Compared to them, there is no visual access to the site except maybe some hiking trails. The lake is almond shaped and it looks quite deep. This is perhaps due to the vigorous terrain around i. There are no trees or higher vegetation around. An electric wire runs past it to the north-east and there is an undeniably good view of the fjord and the whole Haukaas area as it is quite high up the hill.

The space described is the space between Kipenvatnet and Haukasvatnet lakes to the south of the Haukas area. It is a small piece of land with a forest on it, caught between two shorelines of lakes. There is a small cabin in the area, though there is no visible access to it or the area in general. Several housing developments overlook the area both from the south and the north, as the lakes appear to be quite popular with nearby inhabitants. The shore’s fluidity creates little nooks and bays with are perfect for people coming to enjoy the water. The surface is mostly flat even though it sits on the hillside overlooking the fjord.

The spot described is a space of a little cul-de-sac of 4 houses on the end of Almåsvegen street. It is enclosed in a somwhat dense forest up the hill from the main road. The houses are very close to each other in a small clearing of the trees that continues northward. There you can find the most interesting thing about the place, which is a little well in the small clearing. The well is circular and it lies in the middle of a field of low greenery. The existence of the well is interesting since it is the only one visible in the Haukaas area and it shows that there are obvisouly connections of water that run underground from the hillsides as well as water visible on the surface. The well and the clearing might act as a social place for the miniature community of the cul-de-sac, especially in the summertime.

The space described is a piece of Haukaas’s shore that lies directly next to the facilites of the prison near Hylkje. Even though the terrain is not steep, it is an empty piece of shoreline compared to the otherwise fully inhabited shoreline of the Haukaas area. The prison is probably to blame for this, as it cuts the shore from any contact with the main road. Also visible, there is a small forest of broad-leafed trees next to the shore which look quite dense compared to the trees surrounding the area. In the middle of the shore, that runs in more or less a straight line from northwest to southeast there is an old abandoned fishing boat stranded on the rocky beach. It creates a strong platform for stories about this place, dealing with the isolation from nearby urban areas.

A Rolls-Royce Marine AS Engine and a few detached houses in a forest next to it are located in the most northern top of the Haukås site. Controversial location for a big warehouse draws attention. The site is located on the seashore with the widest view in the surrounding – about 270 degrees. The site is closed off for people for security reasons. Though one might argue that there is a lot of natural habitation in the area I see a big loss of potential particularly on this site. The small detached houses next to is give a good idea about the ridiculous scale difference.

Where the bridge touches the land. A very strong man made object that is simple and complex at the same time connects two pieces of land. The bridge is a simple and powerful form that has a complex technical and political background. The point where the bridge touches the land is the most interesting and problematic in my mind. There connection point is never too elegant and creates dark and unused spaces.

11 A test patch, 60°29’43”N 5°21’59”E

A dark spot in the woods. Between nature and habitation. Assumably there has been a forest fire lately. Previous event has crated a blank sheet in the middle of an old vegetation. Area could be seen as a test location for new ideas. Presumably the location is empty of physical objects and vegetation at the moment and this allows to see a lot of potential and future scenarios for it.

A typical Norwegian road in the woods on a slope crossing a river. This location is interesting due to the universality of it. There are no mountains where I come from so a slope makes a site instantly interesting for me. But the main reason I chose to look closer into this site is its universality. There are countless of roads exactly like this that are actually very different from each other. They have their own character in the landscape, vegetation, positioning, they differ seasonally and are of different importance to different people. This narrow road seems to lead to some detached houses. To people living there this is the way home. Nationally it is a low-priority road and the patency for example in the winter comes after hundreds of other roads. This is only one example of this seemingly universal extraordinary slope.

An attractive touristic picture of a riffle in the woods seen in Google Maps. The location and picture are only connected by an arrow on the map. This makes me think about the accuracy and scales you work with from distance. There is no way of really knowing if the location and the picture actually match without going on the site to see it for myself. The professional “photoshopped” image of a riffle and the aerial pictures of the location do not seem to match in my mind. A riffle demands a change in the heights that does not show on the aerial. In conclusion I am quite sceptical about the connection between the picture and the marked location.

There is an area cleared of woods. The edges of the woods are sharp and the grassland has a particular shape. A path leads from a detached house to the north into the wild. The footway meanders over a small slope to the other side. The end and the beginning of the path do not have a visual connection. It is not the destination, but something on the way, the process of walking towards something without a goal.

The land has a cut that starts from north and fades to the inner land in south. The cut continues endlessly, only at some point it turns invisible and continues in your mind. Approaching from the sea this looks like an entrance inside the earth.

16 Between the lines, 60°29’17”N 5°21’54”E

A strong straight line in the woods. Another one parallel to the previous but not as strongly visible. The lines seem straight like man made with a ruler. They don`t mind slopes and mountains that they cross easily. The line has the same material that the surrounding, only it is dense and emphasized.

The bridge located in a place where is surrounded by mountains and only one way open. It is far from the urban area of Bergen and close to the residential area. Meanwhile, the beautiful lakes are the main role of this place and the spot is with 2 lakes by its both sides. The sound of water blew by wind even make this place much more quiet and peaceful. Moreover, the open view of this place is also attractive. It’s very good to stay at a place like that. The spot separate two lakes and connects the lands. That why it is called “bridge”.

The secret base located in a place where is surrounded by mountains and only one way open. It is far from the urban area of Bergen and close to the residential area. Besides the small hill standing at its back, a open-view lake is also lying in front of it. The mountain can be a screen protecting the place from cold wind in winter and the lake can be the main role of the beautiful view of the place. Since the place hides behind the mountain and far from the main road with trees covering in between, it’s not easy to find this place only by eyes. It would be easier to find it when walking through a little forest or climbing down from the hill.

The background is located in a place where is surrounded by mountains there is one way open to the sea. It is far from the city center of Bergen and close to the residential area. The spot is in the middle of the strips shape plain. This plain is so flat that anything building in this place would be easily spotted. In addition, there are two roads lying on its both side and make this place under subconscious attention. Once there is a building standing at the place, it would be under attention by people passing by. The place acts like a background to highlight the building.

The watch tower is located at the peak of a small hill which is standing close to the plain. It is far from the city center of Bergen and close to the residential area. Standing at this spot, the whole view of the plain would be easily absorbed. 360 degree beautiful view can be found in here. There are blue see, the crystal sky, the green mountain and the fantastic houses of residents. It is good to see the culture and nature living with harmony. In addition, the spot is standing right in between two prisons. The spot standing there just like a watch tower. But it is also a watch tower for the beautiful view.

The two-way entrance is located at the entrance to the sea from the river in Haukaas. It is far from the city center of Bergen and close to the residential area. Since the spot is the end of the river, it is the gathering point of all the water from the Haukass. It is also the connection point between the sea and the river. For the river, the spot is the entrance to the sea and it is also the entrance to the river for the sea.

About three hundred from the main road there are small valley in the forest. It is like a miniature valley echoing the bigger valleys in this part of Norway. The valley is a geological rift and gives this part of the forest perticular spatial features. In the bottom of the rift the soil is to wet for threes to grow but the trees stand alongside the whole stretch (about 200 meters).

It is a particular place at Haukaas. Is a place where the line of the coast brakes and allows the water to come into the neighbourhood. Could be called “Haukaas Fjord”, since it is very similar in shape and in concept. With some houses in the border of the “fjord”, and a small accumulation of trees in both sides, could become an important place in this area. Maybe for some activities, sports, events… It is an example of the limits in Haukaas: green zones mixed with houses and some direct connections with the sea (or indirect). Why not to continue this “fjord” more into the land?

All the area of Haukaas seems like a very natural area, where the houses and roads were build taking care about the nature and the vegetation. But, if you analyse it carefully, there are some places that are not “respecting” the nature. This is one of them. A big cut in the land (a perfect cut more or less) to construct parking for this building. This is not the way to play with nature and construction/architecture. Is more important to have parking lots than trees? There are so many ways to construct in the middle of the nature and we should fine a good one.

The loneliness of a house in front of a lake. The connexion that exists between them. Water, land and construction. There is not a huge lake, and there are so many things surrounding this house, but with this cutting of the map, you can imagine that the lake is really big and there is only this house in all the terrain. The scale is very important in situations like this. Who is the owner of this house? Is there any relation between the activities that take place in the house and the lake? What is the view of the lake and the mountains from inside the house?

Another example of the actions of humans in the nature. They needed to make a road and there was a forest in the path, so they cut it to build the new road. But only a few meters in one of the sides, the forest ends. Why they didn’t move the road a little bit and avoid destroying the forest? When a road becomes more important than a forest? Is quite annoying to see that these things are happening in a natural area like Haukaas. I think a way to improve this situation could be to think about the relation between the roads and the nature, and how to go from one place to another one without destroying it.

There is a perfect area, a mountain, completely green and with magnificent views to the fjord. But is destroyed, by humans. Is a zone where the deforestation started, and they are creating new paths, only because of this deforestation. On the other hand, maybe this was caused by a fire, but doesn’t look like this. It is very annoying that this could continue in the entire mountain and destroy all the landscape of Haukaas. This should stop, and this area should be replanted with the same type of trees surrounding. And maybe, some architectural actuations in this zone will be interesting.

On the east side there is land used for agriculture, both for harvesting winterfood for the cattle but also pastryfield in summertime. There used to be five farms sharing these areas , however during the last years this has grown into one unit. Today the farmer is concidering to sell the land for housing project with 5 story blocks with a “modern look”. The area is rather open inbetween two lakes of Haukavann. Big infrastructure lies next to it that use to be the main road up to Haukaas before the tunnel came. It is possible to look at it as a beginning of the green belt up to the mountain Veten or an end point from the blue belt laying from the sea coast in Haukaas. The lakes are located in the bottom of a valley with a steep hill on one site. From the hill trees spread out and create a good barrier on both sides of the road. From a photo you have a clear door that leads you on to the mountain top. After that a small gravel path will take you further on to your adventure. 57 Playground, 60° 28 48.5”N 5° 22 19.6”E

In one end of Haukås we have a really big area consisting of several activities; a sports arena, horse racing track and co cart driving track. This lies next to one of the mountains surrounding Haukås and the main infrastucture coming from Bergen centrum, providing the area with really good connections, both walking and by car. This spots zooms in on an sandmining next the the tunnel. It is barried in by trees all around with one opening out the the road and the co-cart track. The hierarchy in the area is really dramatick after the heavy machinery and there carving out from the land.

58 In Between Three Ponds, 60°28’58.5”N 5°21’51.1”E

A stone’s throw from a nearby road, not far away from some scattered houses and a small neighbourhood, lies a secret green hideaway in between three ponds. A small pocket of conifers, tall, stately and reaching up towards the sky. Anywhere you choose to turn away and leave this gathering of trees, you are bound to encounter one of the surrounding, small, green-blue ponds. Each of the three ponds is full of life, organisms of different sizes and types live within it. On a warm summer’s day they welcome you for a bathe, on a cold winter’s day, they turn into the perfect ice-skating rink.

59 Crux Constellation, 60°29’50.9”N 5°20’57.5”E

Deep into the southern sky lies one of the most distinctive constellations, the crux. Often known as the southern cross. On the other side of the northern hemisphere, in the heart of Haukaas, lies a shrine for cross. Consisting of four major, rectangular buildings and one secondary square hat, they together form an earthly representation of the cross, an image of it in earthly matter. This is the secret meeting point for the cult’s worshipers, meeting in the shrine at 21:00, every day during the month of May when the constellation is at its brightest moment. Not many know of the place.

60 At the End of the Road, 60°28’25.9”N 5°25’10.0”E

At the end of the road on a lonely site, far from the sight of any neighbour, girt only by blue and green, lies a small hat for the hermit. Secluded and tranquil, it is a place for thoughts and reading, a place where one can truly look into the depth of the soul, admire the nature around it and enjoy pristine quite.Around the hat are two adjacent storage hats, ruins of another hat that once stood nearby it and at sea, a rock popping out of the water. Access to the site is permitted only via a small path, as all other directions are guarded by thick woods.

61 Hulderskugen, 60°29’31.6”N 5°22’10.9”E

A dense forest. Trees and vegetation as far as the eye can see. The land is dark, treetops cover the sky. This is the home of huldra, the seductive forest nymph. It is not far away from from a nearby road and neighbourhood, and though many can claim having seen the hulder, no one has any proofs for such encounters. No one wants to get under her spell. One has to take special cautious upon entering the woods. Perhaps the safest time to access the place is during the night when the hulder is asleep. Perhaps it is best avoided all together.

62 Ruins, 60°29’58.4”N 5°18’35.3”E

Situated next to a climbing side road, on a lawn dividing two large parts of a forest, is a deserted small ruin of a stone house and a stone wall adjacent to it. Age and previous use of the building is unknown, yet the beauty and mystery of the site is appealing. The ruined house is relatively compact, rectangular but not parallel to the road self-standing without any other buildings around it or near it. The only remaining part of the building is a memory of the external walls and stone debris on the ground. It is unclear whether the building was torn down intentionally or by a natural event.

63 Two Islands, 60°28’49.9”N 5°20’48.4”E

Situated in Langavatnet, there are only two small islands in the pond. They consist of rocks with some vegetation, only 8 m apart from each other and at a distance of roughly 10.5 m from the shore. The largest island measures about 23 by 12 m, the smaller about 18 by 10 m. They are similar in size and alignment. They both have trees only on the south-west end. They are almost twins or at least close siblings. Close to the islands on the shore are two houses. It is unknown whether the islands are privately owned or publicly accessible.

64 Dippers Nest, 60°29’19.6”N 5°21’21.9”E

Standing tall on the edge of a cliff, overlooking Haukaasvatnet from north, there is a small, lone standing Norwegian-style chalet at the end of a steep path. It is quite similar in shape and size to other private houses in its proximity, though its location makes it somewhat different. The property is almost isolated. The nearest neighbour is some 200 meters away, completely out of sight due to topography and vegetation. Together with the excellent views of the small lake offered at the spot, this property could become ideal as a summer house. It is probably not.

65 The Peak, 60°30’07.8”N 5°19’14.6”E

Veten is 486 m above sea level. Its relative height is 383 m. It is the highest peak of the area, the 9th highest in the entire Bergen region. The meaning of its name comes from the Norwegian word “Beacon”, a well fitting name, as it is certainly well viewed from many surrounding sites and offers back wonderful views towards them. The peak changes colours throughout the seasons, from green during the summer, to gray during the autumn and often white in the winter. It is not very easy to reach without any marked or paved route, yet it is a popular hiking destination.

The first spot is located near to the main road. This first pavilion is used for the begginnig of the sport tour. From it, all the participants that are involved in the event start the tour by challenging themselves, a challenge between their bodies and the spaces. Architecture becomes a funny thing, where the different spaces try to challenge everybody with different kind of activities. In this first pavilion, people have to climb a wall of five meters. The wall is situated as an obstacle in the middle of the way of going to the lake where they will take the boats. along the wall the participants will find a cain of brunches that will help them. they will have to climb as if they were monkeys.

75 A podium to the sea, 60°30’31.8”N 5°22’01.6”E

The area is located in front of a lake, just in the shore, among the trees. The area has a really beautiful views. It isconnected with the town by a path. The lake is the center of attention of the place what makes a virtual axe from the shore and the valley to the lake. The existence of “two world”, water and soil, light and shadow, closed forest and openlake, makes this space unique in the are. Due to this, in this space, architecture become a border between two worlds.Answering both at the same become one ofthe main interesting reason of this space.

This point is located at the end and beginning of the valley at the same time. It is near to a farm. At this point the horizontal forces of the horizon become vertical forces in the valley. There is no reference to the lake or the sea. The horizon becomes much nearer to you. The unique reference you have in the top of the mountain.

The area is located in a hill, among the trees. It is between the forest and the mountain, in the top of the transition between shadows and light. It is an area that looks all over the sea. The hill is the start of a path that goes up to the mountain. The horizon raises up and thesame time you go down. Here, architecture become a viewpoint. The architecture work must grow from the nature, making this place more beautiful. The diference heights makes this place special for contemplation.

This area is located in the shore of the sea, where the horizontal line of the sea is the strongest geometrical sign. It is an area that allows you to peace. The views front the shore to the sea makes architecture to become transparent, making the interior design in something that become outside, making the “cave” in a “cabin”. The space is open in direction to the sea making a transition from the closed world “ the wall” to the open world “the window”.

CLASS DESCRIPTION

International Master’s Studio;Bergen School of Architecture, Spring 2014

Challenged by the planned massive urban development of the Haukaas area, just outside the city center of Bergen, Norway, we encounter the question of how to preserve and develop the potent blue/green presence of the site. The course’s work is to investigate the different characteristics of the haukaas; understanding its topography and history, social complexity and sustainability constrains. Based on this study we are ready to offer and plan our own architectural/artistic inserts into the site, aiming at enhancing the experience of the merely untouched, natural recreational green belt around the urban density, hence, offering another form of usage of an otherwise, overlooked stretch of land.
